🌿 Learning from Malta: How Schools Can Lead Ecosystem Restoration

LEAF Malta showcases how education, outdoor learning, and community action can support ecosystem restoration and long-term environmental stewardship.

The LEAF methodology, particularly the Function and Flourish step, helps connect learners with nature while contributing to local greening efforts and biodiversity protection. One inspiring idea featured is “One Greenhouse Per School,” encouraging young people to grow indigenous trees and take part in meaningful hands-on restoration action that extends beyond the classroom and into the wider community.

"When children grow native trees, they develop patience, responsibility, resilience, stewardship, empathy and care," said Johann Gatt, National Coordinator of LEAF Malta, The Sunday Times of Malta

🌱 Through LEAF, ecosystem restoration becomes a shared journey between learners, educators, families, and communities.

🌱 Discovering Ecosystems with LEAF Kenya

Kenya is a country of extraordinary ecological richness, where dramatic landscapes range from the vast savannahs of the Maasai Mara National Reserve to the snow-capped heights of Mount Kenya. These terrains support iconic wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes, and countless other species that depend on interconnected habitats shaped by seasonal migrations and ancient ecological rhythms to survive.

Kenya's interconnected ecosystems support wildlife, provide water and food security, and shape the traditions and identities of local communities. Protecting them means protecting both nature and culture.

Through LEAF, learners explore ecosystems not only as places of biodiversity, but also as living spaces of cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and environmental stewardship.

🎮 Sometimes, creating global impact starts with something as simple as playing a game.

This International Day for Biological Diversity, we celebrate this year’s theme: “Acting locally for global impact.”

The Nature Restoration Game from UN Environment Programme's invites players to explore how restoring forests, protecting oceans, replanting native trees, and tackling invasive species can strengthen ecosystems and communities.

But the real challenge begins after the game ends.

At Learning about Ecosystems and Forests - LEAF we believe environmental learning should inspire people to look more closely at the natural spaces around them from school grounds and gardens to parks, rivers, and neighbourhood green spaces, and ask:
🌱 What role can I play in protecting and restoring nature where I live?

Because ecosystem restoration does not begin only with large-scale policies or global agreements. It also begins with awareness, curiosity, and local action.

🌐 Discovering Ecosystems with LEAF: Mauritius

Mauritius is home to remarkable ecosystems, from coral reefs and mangroves to lush forests and volcanic landscapes. Its unique biodiversity supports rare wildlife, endemic plant species, and communities closely connected to the natural world.

Yet, climate-related threats such as rising sea levels make protecting and restoring Mauritius’ natural heritage more important than ever for future generations.

LEAF invites learners to explore and connect with nature, building the knowledge and inspiration to take action for a more sustainable future.

🌐Discovering Ecosystems with LEAF: México

México is home to an abundance of ecosystems, from mangrove forests to vast deserts. The country’s rich fauna and flora support extraordinary wildlife, unique plant species, and communities whose lives are deeply connected to nature.

Yet these ecosystems are still under pressure. México has lost over 120,000 hectares of forest cover in 2025 (FAO), a reminder of why ecosystem restoration is more urgent than ever.

LEAF invites students to explore and connect with nature, building the knowledge and motivation to take action for a more sustainable future.
