Green Key is an international environmental certification for hotels and other tourism sites: present in 90+ countries, with more than 9,000 establishments verified. Green Key is an international certification for the leisure industry, created in 1994 in Denmark and adapted in 1998 in France, becoming in 2003 the Fifth programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Green Key is one of the biggest global environmental certifications in the world with 60 countries taking part in Green Key and more than 4,000 establishments awarded.

🔑 Green Key criteria areas 2026–2031: Energy and Carbon

The fourth of our 7 new criteria areas covers energy efficiency, renewable sources and carbon accountability.

Key focus points include:
✅ Monthly energy consumption recording by source
✅ Renewable heating, cooling and electricity sourcing
✅ Energy-efficient windows, lighting and appliances
✅ Regular maintenance of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems
✅ Refrigerant leak checks and HCFC/CFC-free equipment
✅ Demand-controlled heating, ventilation, and cooling
✅ Electric vehicle charging access
✅ Scope 1, 2 and, for the first time, Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions reporting
✅ Annual carbon reduction targets

Energy efficiency remains central, but carbon accountability now goes further than ever.

🌱 Transparency in action: Camping Champ le Monde in Herbeumont, Belgium is sharing its full environmental evaluation and action plan directly with guests.

From LED lighting and sanitary sensors to a professional composting system and selective hornet trapping, the campsite is turning its Green Key journey into an open, ongoing conversation with visitors.

The result: greater awareness, stronger guest engagement, and a shared path toward more responsible tourism.

🔑 Green Key criteria areas 2026–2031: Water

The third of our 7 new criteria areas focuses on responsible water use, from consumption monitoring to efficient fixtures and wastewater management.

Key focus points include:
✅ Monthly water consumption recording
✅ Active leak monitoring and repair
✅ Water-efficient showers, taps, urinals and toilets
✅ Water-efficient dishwashers and laundry machines
✅ Water risk assessments for high-consumption areas
✅ Rainwater and AC condensate reuse
✅ Automatic cut-off systems on public handwashing taps
✅ No bathtubs, jacuzzis or private pools in guest rooms
✅ Full wastewater treatment and reuse where possible

Every litre saved adds up, water efficiency remains a core pillar of Green Key certification.

🔑 Green Key criteria areas 2026-2031: Guest Awareness and Involvement

The second of our 7 new criteria areas focuses on how establishments inform, engage and empower guests to take part in sustainability efforts.

Key focus points include:
✅ Visible Green Key certificate display and website information
✅ Ongoing communication with guests about sustainability initiatives
✅ Guest-facing staff able to speak to Green Key and current initiatives
✅ Promotion of sustainable transportation options
✅ Guest feedback opportunities on sustainability performance
✅ Active digital communication of sustainability practices
✅ Information on nearby nature areas and responsible tourist behaviour
✅ At least 4 guest awareness-raising activities per year
✅ Access to non-motorised transportation rental

Sustainability works best when guests are part of the journey, not just spectators.

Sustainability at Crowne Plaza Rome - St. Peter's happens in the everyday details: efficient energy and water use, local and seasonal sourcing, less paper thanks to digital menus, and a real connection to the local community through the KIM Association and other initiatives.

It even shows up on the plate. As part of GlobalActionDays 2026, the team crafted a zero-kilometer grain salad with Colosseo einkorn farro, Terracina asparagus, Agro Pontino fava beans, and PDO Pecorino Romano, a simple dish built entirely on local ingredients.

Good practice, one small choice at a time. 🌾

The first of the 7 new criteria areas set the foundation for everything else. It covers how sustainability is structured, led, and embedded across an establishment's operations.
Key focus points include:

✅ A dedicated Green Key Establishment Representative
✅ Strategic sustainability targets and an aligned action plan
✅ Fair labour practices, including living wage and written contracts
✅ Grievance and whistleblower mechanisms
✅ Occupational health and safety
✅ Respect for Indigenous peoples and local communities
✅ Equitable recruitment and accessibility
✅ Animal welfare standards
✅ Staff wellbeing initiatives

It's the backbone of the whole certification, sustainability starts with how an organisation is managed.

At Green Key, we believe sustainability in tourism is about more than reducing environmental impacts. It is also about helping create places and experiences that are welcoming and inclusive.

That’s why we’re encouraging Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) across Europe to take part in the European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT)’s new Accessible Tourism Survey.

The survey aims to map what destinations are already doing to improve accessibility and identify opportunities to make tourism across Europe more inclusive.

Accommodation providers and other tourism businesses are an important part of the visitor experience and progress towards more accessible tourism requires action and collaboration across the whole destination.

If you work for a European DMO at national, regional, city or municipal level, we hope you’ll add your voice.

⏱️ It takes 10 minutes or less to complete.

The results will contribute to an ENAT Summary Report this autumn, examining current practices and providing recommendations for developing accessible tourism in the context of the new EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy.
