Big legal victories are often called “landmark” or “ground-breaking.” But these victories rarely happen because of one case alone – behind every major court decision are years of community organising, movement building, smaller legal actions, and more.

When litigating for change, all efforts can have impact and play a role in moving us towards the world we want to live in.

Reflecting on the Court of Justice of the European Union’s groundbreaking decision against Hungary last month, today, on IDAHOBIT – the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia – we’re looking at how the courts have been the source of hard-won LGBQTI rights as well a space to push back on their erosion.

Last summer, our Founder Nani Jansen Reventlow shared that she would be stepping down from Systemic Justice – describing it not as an ending, but as a joyful leadership transition.

This transition is coming to a close in June. As we approach this milestone, we’re resharing Nani’s reflections on leadership, institutional growth, and why making space for new leadership can be essential to building sustainable, long-term change... A must-read 💫

In March, our team gathered together in the Danish countryside to reflect, reconnect, and dream big 🌱

We welcomed a new teammate, continued our leadership transition, and spent time thinking deeply about what the next chapter of Systemic Justice can look like.

And in between the big conversations? Long dinners. Walks along the coast. Laughter. Fresh air. And even...spotting a deer!

The retreat closed in Copenhagen at the launch of Radical Justice at ark books, where Nani and Saranel were in conversation about moving beyond symbolic gestures to systemic change.

It felt like the right way to close the retreat – with our Founder and our Executive Director in conversation, and a shared commitment for the work ahead. As Nani puts in her book: who will create change, if not us?
