From 30 to 31 May 2026, the 9th Copenhagen Dragon Boat Festival was held at Islands Brygge in Copenhagen. As the largest dragon boat cultural event in the Nordic region, the festival has grown into one of the most prominent annual celebrations of Chinese culture in Denmark since its inception. Featuring dragon boat racing alongside cultural exhibitions, culinary showcases and interactive activities, the event attracted a large audience of local residents, international visitors, and representatives from Chinese and Danish cultural institutions.

The opening ceremony was held on 30 May. Among those attending were Wang Xuefeng, Chinese Ambassador to Denmark; Jens-Kristian Lütken, Mayor of Health and Care of the City of Copenhagen; Kong Zheng, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region; Mu Xianghong, Director of China Cultural Center in Copenhagen; as well as representatives from Danish political and business circles, overseas Chinese communities, and other guests from China and Denmark.

At the opening ceremony, the distinguished guests delivered remarks. This was followed by a series of traditional opening activities, including the lion eye-dotting ceremony, the dragon boat eye-dotting ceremony, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a dragon dance performance, officially marking the opening of the festival.

During the event, invited guests jointly recited The Teapot, a fairy tale by renowned Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, in both Chinese and Danish. The bilingual reading, presented as a literary exchange activity, highlighted cultural dialogue and mutual appreciation between China and Denmark, drawing the attention of many visitors.

As one of the supporting organizations of the festival, China Cultural Center in Copenhagen organized a series of cultural exhibitions and exchange activities. During the festival, the cultural and tourism promotion event "Explore Ningxia with the World Heritage Site" was jointly presented by China Cultural Center in Copenhagen and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Through a thematic photo exhibition, promotional videos, tourism publications, destination presentations, and interactive activities, the event introduced Chinese culture as well as Ningxia’s distinctive cultural and tourism resources to local audiences.

During the festival, the Department of Culture and Tourism of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region presented a variety of regionally distinctive performances, including traditional songs, dances, and folk instrumental music. The delegation also showcased representative intangible cultural heritage items such as Ningxia paper-cutting and h**p weaving, along with related cultural and creative products, at the cultural exhibition area. The displays offered visitors an opportunity to experience Ningxia’s rich cultural heritage and folk traditions, attracting considerable interest from local audiences.

On 31 May, the dragon boat races officially took place, with teams from Denmark and other countries and regions competing on the water. China Cultural Center in Copenhagen also fielded a dragon boat team composed of its staff members and Chinese and international volunteers, who participated alongside the other competing teams.

In addition, China Cultural Center in Copenhagen provided a racing dragon boat for this year’s festival. During the competition, a team competing in the boat delivered a strong performance and ultimately secured third place.

Tea for Harmony · Yaji Salon in Copenhagen

From May 20 to 21, the “Tea for Harmony · Yaji Salon” series of cultural events were held in Copenhagen, Denmark, jointly organized by the China Cultural Centre in Copenhagen and undertaken by the Chang’an Purple Clay Specialized Cooperative. Centered on Chinese tea culture and Yixing purple clay art, the program presented a range of activities including tea gatherings, intangible cultural heritage showcases, and ceramic cultural exchanges, offering Danish audiences an immersive experience of the distinctive charm of China’s fine traditional culture and further promoting people-to-people exchanges between China and Denmark.

On the afternoon of May 20, the “Tea for Harmony · Yaji Cultural Salon” Copenhagen tea gathering was held in the multifunctional hall of the cultural center. Centered on Chinese tea culture and Yixing purple clay art, the event offered an immersive experience under the guiding theme of “unity of tea and vessel,” leading local tea enthusiasts to a deeper understanding of the aesthetic values of traditional Chinese life.

At the venue, traditional Chinese music played softly, complementing the elegant tea setting. Guided by tea masters, guests sampled a range of Chinese teas, including green tea (with Longjing as a representative variety), rock tea (yancha), black tea, and Pu’er tea, paired with a selection of refreshments for successive tastings. Through the layered aromas and diverse flavor profiles, participants experienced the richness and diversity of Chinese tea culture.

During the event, a selection of Yixing purple clay works in various forms was on display. Guests closely observed and handled the pieces, experiencing the warm, refined texture of purple clay ware and its distinctive functional aesthetics. The keynote speaker, drawing on the historical development of Yixing’s Yangxian tea culture, referenced a well-known Tang Dynasty poem that reflects the close historical connection between tea and purple clay ware, highlighting the long-standing tradition of “coexistence between tea and pottery” and enabling Danish audiences to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural values and historical depth embodied in Chinese tea culture.

A special hands-on purple clay workshop was also arranged. Local primary school students, accompanied by their parents, took part in the making of Yixing teapots, engaging directly with traditional Chinese craftsmanship through shaping and creative exploration. The children showed strong interest and active participation, contributing to a lively and engaging atmosphere. Many parents noted that such interactive experiences helped children gain a more direct and tangible understanding of the appeal of traditional Chinese culture.

On May 21, the delegation of Yixing purple clay artists from China visited the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory in Denmark, launching a dialogue of ceramic civilizations spanning the East and the West.

The two sides had in-depth exchanges on Royal Copenhagen's over 300-year history of porcelain making and its exquisite hand-painting craftsmanship, and also systematically shared the thousand-year-old heritage of Yixing purple clay, including clay refining, hand-forming and pottery carving techniques.

At the end of the exchange, both sides exchanged commemorative gifts. The purple clay brush pot presented by the Chinese side was particularly ingenious: the pottery carving artist used a knife as a brush to engrave the Chinese national flower peony and the Danish national flower marguerite daisy on the vessel. The two flowers have intertwined roots and interwoven branches, symbolizing the deep-rooted and everlasting friendship between China and Denmark.

“Tea for Harmony” is more than a tea culture event; it is a practice of cross-cultural exchange beyond language and geography. As key expressions of China’s fine traditional culture, Chinese tea culture and Yixing purple clay art reflect a philosophy of harmony, a reverence for nature, and an aesthetic of everyday life, which were clearly conveyed throughout the program and further enhanced Danish audiences’ understanding of Chinese culture.

Zisha Culture in Copenhagen | China Tourism Day 2026

Corresponding to the 2026 China Tourism Day theme, “Enjoy Quality Travel, Explore Scenic Land”, the interactive workshop Discover Zisha – Where Nature Meets Design was held in Copenhagen on May 19. Centered on traditional Yixing zisha teaware, the event combined presentations, craft demonstrations, and hands-on experiences, inviting Danish participants to engage in a cross-cultural dialogue on aesthetics through both observation and personal interaction.

The program was introduced through the lens of Nordic design language, drawing a comparison between Yixing zisha teapots and the iconic Y-stol chair by Danish modernist designer Hans Wegner. This approach helped the audience better understand the aesthetic expression of zisha craftsmanship in a contemporary context, as well as the shared principles between China and Denmark in terms of nature, functionality, and sustainable design.

At the venue, raw Yixing zisha clay and finished pieces were presented side by side. Participants were invited to touch the unfired clay, experiencing its fine, supple texture and the subtle variations in temperature that reflect its natural state.

Zisha artisans demonstrated the full process of traditional handcrafting and ceramic carving on site. From joining clay slabs, forming the body of the teapot, to the movement of carving tools, the complete creation process of a teapot was presented before the audience.

The master craftsmen also created ink paintings on paper fans, depicting themes of China–Denmark friendship through expressive brushwork, which received enthusiastic responses from the audience.

A dedicated interactive session was arranged as part of the program, where several participants personally engaged in the process of making zisha teapots. Under the guidance of artisans, they experienced the intricate details and tactile qualities of traditional handcraft techniques.

The tea pets displayed on site changed color when hot water was poured over them, which surprised many visitors and sparked strong interest. A large number of attendees stopped to watch and took photos to capture the moment.

In addition, a Chinese-style tea setting photo area was specially arranged at the Center, featuring interactive props such as folding fans. It attracted many participants who took turns posing for photos, creating a relaxed and lively atmosphere on site.

Many visitors noted that this complete “from raw ore to finished vessel” presentation reshaped their understanding of craftsmanship, revealing the temporal depth and emotional resonance embedded in handmade objects. It also offered a more tangible perception of the principle of harmony between humanity and nature in traditional Chinese craftsmanship.

Framed within the 2026 China Tourism Day theme, the event moved traditional craftsmanship beyond static exhibition through interactive participation and live demonstrations. It enabled the audience to gain a clearer understanding of the production processes and aesthetic principles behind zisha ware through hands-on engagement and close observation. In doing so, it also highlighted the cultural philosophy of “embedding aesthetics in everyday life,” while offering a more immersive and accessible platform for the presentation and international exchange of China’s intangible cultural heritage in a cross-cultural context.
