We are the nerds with swords your mama warned you about

Aros Historical Fencing Guild is a historical fencing club, located in the town of Århus, Denmark, that focusses on German medieval and renaissance fencing. We concentrate on longsword fencing, with or without armour and on sword and buckler fencing. Our research is based on fencing manuscripts from the 14th – 17th century although with focus on the 14th–15th century. Countless happy hours have be

en spent over these manuals, transcribing and interpreting their at times cryptic writings. We often travel around Europe and attend historical fencing events as we feel network building and the sharing of research is important for continual development of our skills as both practitioners and researchers of historical fencing. German fencing is not about flashy big theatrical movements. German fencing is an art where our key words are timing, distance and the beautiful words: "Fühlen" and "Indes". Understanding these words are all important if you want to fence like a German fencer. It is important to wear protective equipment if you want to practice the art of medieval German fencing. We wear fencing masks, padded leather jackets, elbow protection, gloves, chest protection and groin protection when we spar with each other. The head is perhaps the most important target in medieval fencing so masks are worn at all times when doing either drills/exercises or sparring. In our fencing club we feel that blunt steel swords are the only thing that comes close to real sharp swords. So this is what we use at all times. That being said we are more than willing to try out new sword simulators but have so far not seen anything that we find more realistic than blunt steel.

We’re happy to share that Aarhus Historical Fencing Guild collaborated with the University of Aarhus on a recent study on scoring efficiency in historical fencing, led by Dr. Hans Snipesen.

The conclusion is clear:

🔥Snappy hits to the hands, performed from as far a distance as possible, are the most effective technique in the HEMA repertoire.

Key findings:

🫥78% demoralization effect of successful actions that target the fingers.

🦤Exchanges lasting more than 2 seconds are “unnecessary risk”, thus not martial.

🤓Deep target techniques show significantly lower efficiency and, the study continues, are "only for losers and tryhards".

🃏Ringen and other techniques performed up close are for confused MMA fighters and bar brawlers.

Based on this, we’ll begin updating our training. ✋🎯

We have recently updated our cover photo after many years of loyal service from the previous one.

The new image captures a moment from a recent training, where our instructors Germano and Benjamin are celebrating their results from the latest tournament (🥇+🥈), surrounded by a group that, in this particular session, was made up almost entirely of new fencers who only joined us in September 2025.

The photo is a touchpoint between two generations of fencers within our club.

The old and the new.
The veterans and the newcomers.
The masters and the students.

It is great to see such a motivated group of new members joining our ranks, getting their own gear, showing commitment, curiosity and a willingness to learn. Many of them have already made strong progress in a relatively short time.

We are looking forward to following their journey, among our new fencers are the future instructors and champions of our guild.
Only a matter of time before we will see them bring medals back to the club. ⚔️

Your favourite HEMA Guild's least motivated SoMe admin is back after a long break with an important update.

Yesterday a small delegation from our club attended the Danish Longsword Running Rank tournament, which took place during the HEMA Hobro Skt. Paddy's event.

Our members distinguished themselves with a solid performance on and off the piste, with our instructors Germano and Benjamin Lentz Olesen securing first🥇and second🥈 place and claiming the top of the podium for our guild.

Strong effort also from Magnus Spetzler, Daniel Pedersen and Mattias Nyström, who after just a few months of training and in his first tournament bagged a strong win with some excellent actions.

The event combined competition with learning, with some great workshops. Our instructor Benjamin offered his interpretation on Blossfechten with the Messer in the style of Leckuchner.

Big thanks to everyone involved in the organisation and congratulations to our fencers for their accomplishments.

Belated monthly recap post.
The end of November marks the end of our intro course. This year about 15 fencers have joined our club, many of which already acquiring their own gear and showing great motivation into learning HEMA.

The intro course covered a variety of topics, from overall conditioning to foundational elements like measure, tempo and footwork. Our student, guided by our instructors Benjamin and Germano showed great promise and passion and are now ready to dwell deeper into the mysteries of our beloved art.

Our new intro course continues with packed classes and plenty of eager new fencers.
This month we covered the basics, focusing on the core concepts of HEMA. We hope this will be the start of a great fencing journey.

Last weekend, a delegation of our fencers took part in the Danish National HEMA Tournament, which our club had the pleasure of organizing.

Our members distinguished themselves with good performance and our instructor Germano brought home silver medals in Longsword and Saber, as well as bronze in rapier and dagger. 🥈🥈🥉

The tournament also marked the end of the 2025 Danish ranking Longsword league, where our members Germano, Benjamin Lentz Olesen and Michał Barczuk finished he season ranked number 1, 3 and 5 in Denmark— a huge achievement!

A massive thank you to all the participants, to our Chairman Benjamin, our member Søren Larsen and all the amazing volunteers who put in so much effort to make everything run smoothly.

[EARLY BIRD TSHIRT]

Only a few days left to grab the early bird ticket, and with it comes the HEMA SQUAD GAME 2 t-shirt. 🙂
We think it is a good time to show you what it looks like.

On the front: our poster art, reimagined for fabric glory.
On the back: we played with the idea of a concert-tour shirt, but with the list of the challenges you will play instead of the list of the cities.
The challenges will remain a secret until the event, so we have blurred them in the mockup... expect the unexpected. ⚔️

The shirt is only included if you sign up with the early bird ticket and the time is running out!
