The Board of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), meeting in Dushanbe (Tajikistan) at its 45th session (B.45), approved on Wednesday 1 July 2026 the accreditation of Mali-Folkecenter Nyetaa (MFC Nyetaa) as a Direct Access Entity of the Fund.
This decision marks the successful conclusion of a rigorous and demanding process, conducted over several years, during which MFC Nyetaa demonstrated the strength of its governance, the reliability of its fiduciary management, and the compliance of its policies and environmental and social safeguard systems with the highest international standards. The accreditation will now enable MFC Nyetaa to access Green Climate Fund resources directly, in order to develop and implement climate change adaptation and mitigation projects for the benefit of Malian communities.

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞

MFC Nyetaa expresses its deep gratitude to the authorities of the Republic of Mali, and in particular to the Ministry in charge of the Environment and to its National Designated Authority to the Green Climate Fund (AEDD), for having endorsed MFC Nyetaa's application and supported it unreservedly throughout the accreditation process. This institutional support reflects the confidence placed in national organisations to lead the country's climate action.
Our thanks also go to Malian civil society, and most particularly to ResoClimat Mali, with its more than 130 Malian NGOs and associations active on climate change and environmental protection issues, whose steadfast commitment and solidarity have accompanied this endeavour at every stage.
MFC Nyetaa warmly thanks its technical and financial partners, who have stood by the organisation throughout this long process and whose support has contributed to the continuous strengthening of its institutional and operational capacities.

As a Direct Access Entity, MFC Nyetaa intends to contribute to strengthening Mali's access to international climate finance and to delivering on national adaptation and mitigation priorities, in a spirit of transparency, accountability and partnership.

Established in 1999 with support of the Danish Folkecenter for Renewable Energy and based in Bamako, Mali-Folkecenter Nyetaa is a Malian non-governmental organisation working in the fields of renewable energy, climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, environmental protection and local economic development. A signatory of a framework agreement with the Malian State, MFC Nyetaa has been implementing projects and programmes for the benefit of rural and urban communities for more than twenty years, notably through its network of Local Resource Hubs (Pôles de Ressources Locales), and has contributed to the development of major national strategic documents, including Mali's National Climate Change Policy and the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy.

CHERNOBYL 40 years.
Today, April 26, 2026, it is 40 years since Chernobyl reactor 4 exploded in the most serious nuclear power disaster to date. Now, 40 years later, there is still a closed zone of 30 km in diameter with radioactive hotspots. The destroyed reactor itself still contains a lot of radioactive material and is shielded by a so-called sarcophagus, which, if all goes well, can last for 100 years. After that, our descendants will build a new one for the next 100 years and so on. And unfortunately, all is not well with the sarcophagus: a hole was already punched in the sarcophagus in a Russian drone attack on February 14, 2025 (see picture).
In the rest of Europe, where large amounts of radioactive material were dispersed, there have been restrictions on the use of mutton meat as far away as Wales until 2012 due to the radioactivity of the meat. And in Ukraine and Belarus alone, the cost of the disaster is estimated at $384 billion for the first 30 years, according to estimations by UNDP and UNICEF with UNOCHA and WHO (2002). This is equivalent to 80% of the Danish annual GDP.
Have we learned anything from the Chernobyl disaster?
We have been taught someone about nuclear power safety; but we should learn that the owners of the nuclear power plants must pay for the costs they cause, so that innocent people are not again made to pay for costs corresponding to the Danish annual GDP, as happened with the Chernobyl disaster. Unfortunately, in most countries the liability is limited to less than 1% of the costs caused by Chernobyl, so there is a long way to go. We can also learn that the location far from larger cities had the advantage that there were only smaller towns that had to be evacuated. Now nuclear power supporters, in particular supporter of the small-and middle sized SMR’s, want to place nuclear power plants in harbours and near cities. So they obviously do not want to learn from the experience and instead expose many citizens to the risk of living close to a nuclear power plant.
Let us use the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster to consider if it is really a good idea to build more nuclear power plants or rather choose a transition away from fossil fuels with safer alternatives? This consideration must also include the fact that renewable energy sources and energy efficiency today are both much cheaper and far faster to establish than nuclear power.
