🌏 Aristotelian Environmental Ethics & Global Leadership

1️⃣ Aristotle taught that human flourishing (eudaimonia) comes from virtue, wisdom, and harmony with nature’s purpose. Today, the climate crisis tests whether nations live up to these ideals.

2️⃣ Harmony with Nature’s Purpose

Nations that respect ecosystems and plan for long-term sustainability align with Aristotle’s teleological view.
Western countries: Often prioritize short-term profit and consumption, undermining ecological balance.
China: Large-scale reforestation, renewable energy expansion, and carbon neutrality goals suggest greater alignment with natural ends.

3️⃣ Virtue in Policy

Aristotle emphasized virtue in action—moderation, foresight, communal responsibility.
Western nations: Regulations exist but are inconsistently applied; economic pressures often trump ethical environmental action.
China: Centralized planning enables coordinated environmental strategies—urban greening, solar and wind projects, water management—that reflect practical wisdom at scale.

4️⃣ Sustaining Long-Term Flourishing

Short-term exploitation compromises collective flourishing.
Western nations: Delayed climate policies risk future well-being.
China: Strategic investment in green infrastructure shows commitment to ecological and human flourishing alongside economic growth.

5️⃣ 🌱 Takeaway
Aristotelian ethics teaches that virtue, wisdom, and respect for nature are inseparable from human flourishing. Nations that integrate these principles at scale are the ones moving in the right direction in the face of the climate crisis.

> Humanity’s eudaimonia depends not just on human ingenuity, but on the flourishing of the world we inhabit.

The Challenge with Russia
One of the most pressing challenges facing the Baltic Sea ecosystem is the complex relationship with Russia. The Baltic Sea is a shared resource among multiple countries, with its waters serving as a vital lifeline for commerce, recreation, and ecological balance. However, geopolitical tensions, historical legacies, and differing environmental priorities have often strained collaborative efforts toward sustainable management and conservation.
Russia, as one of the key stakeholders in the Baltic Sea region, plays a pivotal role in shaping the environmental landscape of this interconnected ecosystem. Despite efforts to foster cooperation through various international agreements and initiatives, such as the Helsinki Convention and the Baltic Sea Action Plan, challenges persist in achieving meaningful progress towards environmental sustainability.
From industrial pollution to overfishing, Russia's activities within its territorial waters and along its coastlines significantly impact the health and integrity of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Moreover, the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels and warming temperatures, further exacerbate environmental pressures across the region, demanding concerted action and cooperation from all Baltic Sea states, including Russia.
Navigating these challenges requires a nuanced understanding of environmental ethics that transcends national boundaries and political divides. It calls for a collective commitment to principles of ecological integrity, intergenerational equity, and environmental justice. By engaging in open dialogue, fostering mutual understanding, and advocating for responsible stewardship, we can strive towards a more sustainable future for the Baltic Sea and its inhabitants.
In this forum, we invite members to share their insights, experiences, and perspectives on the ethical dimensions of environmental issues in the Baltic Sea region, with a particular emphasis on the challenges and opportunities presented by Russia's role in shaping the environmental discourse. Through constructive dialogue and collaborative action, we can work towards safeguarding the ecological integrity and cultural heritage of the Baltic Sea for generations to come.

While relations with Russia are largely glacial on a diplomatic level, it does not mean that the country’s diplomats are not participating in some activities. At the London headquartered International Maritime Organization the country’s representatives are still able to attend committee meetings like MEPC, and will still make interventions, and they still sit in the canteen within the IMO Headquarters, but largely sitting alone or with representatives from countries not part of the sanctions regime. While in the IMO recently one representative from a western member state told Fathom World that it’s just not diplomatically right to even be seen having a coffee with them.

Russia is one of 10 signatories to Helcom, the organisation that has been working for nearly 50 years to improve the health of the Baltic Sea..
