Crew for Africa è un’associazione no-profit. È nata nel 2008 per aiutare le popolazioni che abitano le zone più povere del C***o d’Africa, nel piccolo stato di Gibuti; in particolare, per contribuire a combattere la malnutrizione infantile, le difficili condizioni igieniche e l’analfabetismo. Dal 2009, l’associazione ha accolto un gruppo di infermie
ri professionali del 118 e altri volontari con diverse competenze in ambito sociosanitario, formativo e gestionale. È stato possibile, in questo modo, realizzare numerosi progetti di supporto all’Ospedale Balbala di Gibuti in collaborazione con il Ministero della Sanità locale e con la Scuola Miriam in collaborazione con l'Associazione locale dei Genitori. Gibuti
Gibuti è uno stato del C***o d’Africa, tra i più piccoli del continente oltre che tra i più poveri del mondo. Negli ultimi dieci anni ha assistito a un incremento esponenziale della sua popolazione; la causa è l’afflusso di profughi provenienti dai paesi vicini (Eritrea, Somalia ed Etiopia) messi a dura prova da sanguinosi conflitti sociali interni, e da lunghi e drammatici momenti di siccità. Questo afflusso ha avuto un costo enorme per Gibuti in termini di condizioni socio-economiche sempre più difficili e mutevoli. Al punto che una larga parte degli abitanti del paese è affetta da malattie causate dalla malnutrizione e dalle cattive condizioni igieniche. Più in generale, l’intero C***o d'Africa è oggi violentemente colpito dalla crisi planetaria, che inasprisce le condizioni già difficili in cui versa la zona: guerre, carestie e una costante e diffusa emergenza igienica. Primo tra tutti l’infausta tradizione di mutilare gli organi ge***ali femminili, con gravissime conseguenze anche sanitarie, oltre che sociali. _
Balbabà
Balbalà è il nome di una baraccopoli abitata da oltre 300.000 persone alla periferia di Gibuti; sono autoctoni e rifugiati delle vicine Etiopia, Eritrea e Somalia. La maggioranza della popolazione versa in condizioni di estrema povertà, al limite della sopravvivenza. Quasi tutti vivono in baracche fatte di lamiera (da cui deriva il nome: Balbalà, cioè “metallo che luccica”), di cartone o di compensato, con un difficile accesso all’acqua e all’elettricità. Non esiste sistema fognario e la poca acqua che si trova è spesso molto inquinata. Il cibo è scarso e la possibilità di coltivazione e pascolo all’interno della baraccopoli è inesistente: la zona è infatti torrida, con temperature che, da maggio a settembre, toccano anche picchi di 50 gradi, in aggiunta ad altissimi tassi di umidità. In tali condizioni, un bambino su tre soffre di malnutrizione severa e i tassi di analfabetismo e di disoccupazione sono elevatissimi. Un ospedale a Balbalà
L’ospedale
Quasi al centro di Balbalà è attivo, dal 1985, l’ospedale omonimo. Nato come centro pediatrico infantile, è diventato un centro di eccellenza per l’intera zona; cerca di dare risposte efficaci alle emergenze sanitarie e ai bisogni assistenziali, seppure con forze umane ed economiche spesso insufficienti. Dal 2007 Crew For Africa contribuisce ad aiutare questo ospedale, attraverso raccolte di fondi e collaborazioni con strutture sanitarie e aziende italiane. In particolare, fornisce strumentazione ospedaliera e beni di prima necessità: latte in polvere arricchito, alimenti non deperibili e vestiario per bambini. Viene poi curata la formazione continua degli infermieri dell’ospedale di Balbalà tramite missioni in loco di personale specializzato. Una scuola a Balbalà
La scuola
All’interno della baraccopoli di Balbalà esiste una piccola scuola, la scuola Miriam. È anch’essa fatta di lamiere e compensato. La tengono in vita alcuni insegnanti, che danno un’istruzione di base ai bambini di Balbalà. La maggioranza dei bambini che frequentano la scuola Miriam sono “sans papier”: rifugiati, immigrati clandestini o privi di un’identità amministrativa; non sono mai stati registrati all’atto della nascita, come succede spesso per i nomadi o per gli orfani. In questo contesto è impossibile accedere all’istruzione statale. L’idea che l’alfabetizzazione sia necessaria è infatti lontana dall’ordine di priorità di sopravvivenza degli abitanti. Tanto che occorre un enorme sforzo anche per sensibilizzare alla scolarizzazione: soprattutto i genitori, spesso analfabeti, che faticano a comprendere l’importanza dell’istruzione e preferiscono che i propri figli contribuiscano a sostenere il magro bilancio familiare. In questo, le bambine, in quanto femmine, sono maggiormente penalizzate._
La scuola è frequentata da 300 bambini di un’età compresa tra i 5 e i 13 anni; le classi vanno dalla prima elementare alla seconda media. All’interno della scuola la luce filtra da finestre intagliate nelle pareti di lamiera e l’elettricità viene usata per alimentare una ventola sul soffitto che serve come sistema di areazione. Non vi sono servizi igienici e l’acqua necessaria viene trasportata in taniche di plastica. Il nostro impegno
Dall’incontro con Don Francesco Saverio Bazzoffi e con la Fondazione Casa dei Santi Arcangeli è nato il progetto di sostenere la scuola Miriam: per arginare il problema dell’istruzione negata a quei bambini e a quei ragazzi che non esistono agli occhi del paese e che, a causa della profonda povertà, non avrebbero mai accesso alla scuola statale. _
L’obiettivo del nostro progetto è edificare una nuova scuola a due piani in un terreno che abbiamo già acquistato. In questo modo sarebbe possibile garantire l’istruzione primaria in un ambiente sano e adeguato ad accogliere il numero di bambini che lo frequenta: un edificio finalmente attrezzato di sistemi igienico-sanitari e di arredi appropriati. Abbiamo sostenuto la completa formazione professionale del direttore didattico della scuola. In questo modo essa ha ottenuto il pieno riconoscimento dal Ministero dell’istruzione di Gibuti. I bambini, una volta terminato il loro corso di studi, possono così continuare il loro percorso formativo nelle scuole secondarie statali. La seconda fase del progetto prevede di contribuire all’attività degli insegnanti; sia con dei contributi straordinari per gli stipendi, sia con l’acquisto delle attrezzature didattiche e degli arredi. Programmi didattici
Dal 2010 Crew For Africa ha avviato un programma didattico-educativo che coinvolge insegnanti e alunni italiani di diverse età. Il progetto ha come obiettivo avvicinare alle diversità culturali, sociali, geografiche, storiche, economiche dei paesi in via di sviluppo; soprattutto alla realtà di Gibuti, attraverso gemellaggi culturali tra la scuola della baraccopoli e quelle della provincia bolognese. Nell’arco dell’anno scolastico è previsto uno scambio di lettere, disegni e fotografie che raccontano la storia dei bambini nei loro rispettivi contesti: tutto ciò rappresenta un’occasione di confronto con loro per spingerli alla riflessione e una grande occasione di crescita e di apprendimento. stimolando così un percorso critico e consapevole verso la multicultura, la condivisione, la solidarietà e gli stili di vita sostenibili. Realizziamo e organizziamo eventi culturali in Italia, anche in collaborazione con altri soggetti pubblici e privati per illustrare le attività svolte dall’Associazione. Crew for Africa is a non-profit Organization. Born in 2008 to help the population who live in the poorest areas of the Horn of Africa, in the small country of Djibouti; in particular, to help fighting against the child malnutrition, the difficult hygienic conditions and illiteracy. Since 2009, the Association has welcomed some nursing staff from 112 service and other volunteers with skills in different fields: social and health care, training and management. It has been possible, in this way, to realize a number of projects supporting the Balbala Hospital in Djibouti in collaboration with the local Ministry of Health and the Miriam School in collaboration with the local Association of Parents. Djibouti
Djibouti is a country in the Horn of Africa, among the smallest of the continent and the poorest of the world as well. Over the past decade he attended an exponential growth of his population; the cause is the influx of refugees from the nearby countries (Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia) severely tested by bloody inside social conflicts, and long and dramatic periods of drought. This inflow has had an enormous cost to Djibouti in terms of social-economic conditions increasingly difficult and changing; so much so that a large part of the population is affected by diseases caused by malnutrition and poor hygienic conditions. More generally, nowadays the entire Horn of Africa is strongly struck by the global crisis, which worsens the already difficult conditions of the area: wars, famines and a constant and widespread hygienic emergency. In addition there are further elements of difficulty: first of all the unfortunate tradition of mutilating the female ge***al organs, with serious consequences for health and social as well. Balbala
Balbala is the name of a slum of more than 300.000 people in the suburbs of Djibouti; they are natives and refugees of the nearby Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia. The majority of the population live in conditions of extreme poverty, struggling to survive. Almost all living in shacks made of metal sheet (hence the name Balbala, which means “shining metal”), of cardboard or plywood, with difficult access to water and electricity. There is no sewage system and the poor available water is often very polluted. Food is poor and the possibility of cultivation and pasturage inside the slum is non-existent: the area is indeed torrid, with temperatures reaching, from May until September, peaks of 50 degrees, in addition to very high level of humidity. In such conditions, one child in three suffers from severe malnutrition, illiteracy and unemployment are very diffused. A hospital in Balbala
The hospital
Since 1985, almost in the center of Balbala, the namesake hospital is active. Born as a child pediatric center, has become a center of excellence in the entire area; seeking to respond in concrete to the health emergencies and basic needs, although with human and economic means often insufficient. Since 2007 Crew For Africa contributes in helping this hospital, through fundraising and partnerships with health facilities and Italian companies. In particular, it supplies hospital equipment and basic necessities like enriched milk powder, non-perishable food and children clothing. It is also cured the continuing education of nurses in Balbala hospital through on-site missions of specialized personnel. A school in Balbala
The school
Inside the slum of Balbala there is a small school, the school Miriam. It is also made of metal sheets and plywood. Some teachers are keeping it alive, providing basic education to the children of Balbala. The majority of children who attend the school Miriam are "undocumented" : refugees, illegal immigrants or without any administrative identity; were never registered at birth, as is often the case for the nomads or for orphans. In this context it is impossible to access to government schools. The idea that literacy is necessary is in fact very far from the priority of survival of the population. So much so that it takes a huge effort to make awareness for education: especially parents, often illiterate, who are in difficulties to understand the importance of education and prefer that their children can help to support the poor family budget. In this the girls, because females, are more penalized. The school is attended by 300 children between the ages of 5 and 13 years; classes ranging from first standard to seventh grade. Inside the school, the light filters from windows carved in the walls of metal sheet and the electricity is used to power a fan on the ceiling that serves as a ventilation system. There are no toilets and water required is transported in plastic containers. Our engagement
From the encounter with Don Francesco Saverio Bazzoffi and the Foundation Casa dei Santi Arcangeli was made the project to support the school Miriam: to solve the problem of education denied to those children and those guys that do not exist for the country and, because of deep poverty, they would never have access to the state school. The aim of our project is to build a new school of two floors in an area that we have already purchased. This would make it possible to grant primary education in a healthy environment and adequate to accommodate the number of children : a building finally equipped with sanitary systems and appropriate furnishings. We have supported the complete training of the school director. In this way it has been obtained the full approval from the Ministry of Education of Djibouti. The children, once completed their course of study, can continue their formative training in secondary state schools. contributions for salaries, and with the purchase of teaching equipment and furnishings. Other activities
Educational programs
Since 2010 Crew For Africa has launched an educational program that involves teachers and Italian students of different ages. The project's objective is to approach the cultural, social, geographical, historical, economic diversity of developing countries; especially to the reality of Djibouti, through cultural twinning between the school in the slum and those in the province of Bologna. During the school year is planned an exchange of letters, drawings and photographs that tell the story of the children in their respective contexts: all that represents an opportunity of comparison with them to encourage them to reflection and a great opportunity for growth and learning, thus stimulating a critical and conscious route towards the multi-culture, sharing, solidarity and sustainable lifestyles.
