Circular Valley is the global hotspot for Circular Economy

How can companies design their sites to promote biodiversity and contribute to climate protection? This was the topic of our latest Circular Valley Partner Talk, hosted by KNIPEX.

Following opening remarks by Managing Partner Ralf Putsch, Barbara Meimeth, Head of Sustainability at KNIPEX, introduced the company's wide range of biodiversity measures, from flower meadows and orchard meadows to bird-friendly hedges and green roofs. During a guided tour of the site, we were able to see firsthand how these and many other initiatives have been integrated into a modern industrial environment.

In the presentations that followed, Dr. Martina Koch, Team Leader for Nature-Based Company Grounds & Biodiversity Projects at the Heinz Sielmann Foundation, explained how companies can create valuable habitats, strengthen ecological networks and make their sites more resilient to the impacts of climate change. One message stood out in particular: Every square meter counts.

Marie-Theres Hosp and Dr. Dietmar Schölisch from Provinzial then presented their "Bodenluft" initiative, demonstrating how removing sealed surfaces can help reduce flood risks, mitigate urban heat and create new habitats for plants and animals. Together, the presentations highlighted that biodiversity and climate adaptation should always be considered together.

The lively discussion that followed once again showed how valuable the exchange of practical experience within the Circular Valley network is.

Ohne Seltene Erden läuft in unserer modernen Welt fast nichts. Trotzdem ist Deutschland zu 90 bis 100 % von chinesischen Importen abhängig.

Elektromotoren, Windturbinen, Smartphones: Seltene Erden sind die unsichtbare Grundlage der Energiewende. Sie sind gar nicht so selten, wie ihr Name vermuten lässt. Aber ihre Gewinnung und Aufbereitung ist hochkomplex, und genau dieses Know-how ist im Westen über Jahrzehnte verloren gegangen. Das Ergebnis: eine Abhängigkeit, die uns wirtschaftlich und sicherheitspolitisch angreifbar macht, wie sich schon 2010 zeigte, als China seinen Export kurzzeitig stoppte.

Dieser Kurzfilm zeigt, warum Seltene Erden für die Energiewende unverzichtbar sind, wie diese Abhängigkeit entstanden ist und warum Recycling und Kreislaufwirtschaft ein entscheidender Hebel sein können, um sie zu verringern und resilienter zu werden. Denn viele Seltene Erden liegen längst nicht mehr nur in der Erde, sondern stecken bereits in unseren Produkten.

Since the launch of our Circular Economy Accelerator, participating startups have raised more than €350 million in funding, while collaborating with leading companies, researchers, investors, and policymakers to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

Wie sieht die Recyclinganlage der Zukunft aus? In dieser Folge unseres Podcasts sprechen wir mit Amelie Finkbeiner, Business Development Lead bei WasteFlow, über KI im Recycling und darüber, wie digitale Technologien die Branche grundlegend verändern können.

WasteFlow entwickelt KI-gestützte Lösungen, die Materialströme in Recyclinganlagen in Echtzeit analysieren und so Prozesse sicherer, effizienter und wirtschaftlicher machen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf der Erkennung gefährlicher Objekte wie Lithium-Ionen-Batterien, die in der Praxis zunehmend zu einem Risiko werden.

Im Gespräch geht es außerdem um digitale Zwillinge von Recyclinganlagen, die Komplexität heterogener Stoffströme und die Frage, wie Daten zur zentralen Grundlage für Automatisierung und Optimierung im Recycling werden.

In der neuen Folge unseres Podcasts sprechen wir mit Maike Lambarth, CEO und Co-Founderin von Cyclize, über eine Technologie, die gemischte Abfälle und CO₂ in Synthesegas umwandelt – und damit fossiles Erdgas als Basischemikalie ersetzen könnte.

Cyclize nutzt dafür Plasma-Technologie, um Abfallströme zu verwerten, die heute häufig verbrannt werden. Die Folge zeigt, welche Grenzen mechanisches und klassisches chemisches Recycling haben, warum neue Technologien für die Kreislaufwirtschaft entscheidend sind.

Was braucht die Kreislaufwirtschaft ganz konkret, damit die Kreislaufwirtschaft wirklich skaliert?

In dieser Sonderfolge unseres Podcasts bündeln wir die Antworten auf diese, vielleicht wichtigste, Frage aus all unseren Gesprächen. Am Ende jeder Episode bitten wir unsere Gäste um konkrete Wünsche, Bedarfe oder Forschungsaufträge. Und genau diese Perspektiven stehen hier im Mittelpunkt.

Entstanden ist ein prägnantes Best-of aus Industrie, Startups und Forschung, das aufzeigt, wo aktuell die größten Hebel liegen. Es geht um konkrete Aufgabenstellungen in den Bereichen Verpackung und Materialien, um neue Ansätze in der Landwirtschaft und Chemie, um Bedarfe in der Abfallwirtschaft, bei Rücknahmesystemen oder im zirkulären Bauen, aber auch um strukturelle Fragen wie Finanzierung, Regulierung und tragfähige Geschäftsmodelle.
