Troop 107 Honors Friendship and Shared Scouting Traditions at Remagen
By Thomas Raymann, Scoutmaster, Troop 107, Wiesbaden Germany
On March 7, 2026, Scouts from Troop 107 in Wiesbaden, Germany gathered along the banks of the Rhine River in Remagen to take part in a small but meaningful ceremony celebrating the 81st anniversary of the events surrounding the capture of the undamaged Ludendorff railway bridge by the US Army on March 7, 1945. Then Troop celebrated international friendship, shared history, and the values of Scouting.
The occasion marked the donation and dedication of new United States and German national flags at the Friedensmuseum Brücke von Remagen or in English, Friendship Bridge Museum at Remagen, located at the historic Ludendorff Bridge towers. The bridge site, known worldwide the “Bridge at Remagen,” stands as a powerful symbol of cooperation and reconciliation following World War II. Today on the western banks of the Rhine River, houses the Friendship Bridge Museum, where visitors from can reflect on history and the enduring importance of partnership between Germany and the United States.
Twelve Scouts and seven adult leaders from Troop 107 in Wiesbaden, Germany, were joined by 5 Scouts and one adult leader from Troop 56, located in Bonn, Germany and several German Scouts from the local German Pfadfinder group, Stamm Albert Schweitzer, a German Pfadfinder group located in the town of Remagen, had the honor of providing the new flags that were raised during the ceremony. The previous flags, which had flown through years of Rhine weather, had faded and worn. After learning of the need for replacements, Scouters from Troop 107 worked together with local German Pfadfinders to organize the presentation and rededication during the celebration commemorating the 81st anniversary events.
For the Scouts, the event was more than simply replacing old and tattered flags. It was an opportunity to build friendships between American Scouts living overseas and a German Pfadfinder group who share their love of outdoor adventure, service, and leadership.
In the weeks leading up to the event, members of Troop 107 coordinated with their chartered organization, VFW Post 27, to provide funds for the purchase of the flags and with their German scout counterparts to coordinate their activities during and after the ceremony. The collaboration reflected the same spirit that has long united Scouting movements around the world, youth learning from one another while serving their communities.
During the dedication ceremony, Scouts from both countries stood side by side as the new flags were raised above the museum grounds. The event had speeches from local and national dignitaries. One special speaker in attendance was Ms. Hellen Patton, the granddaughter of General George S. Patton. With the Rhine flowing steadily adjacent to the site, over 75 people and passers by pausing to watch.
For those present, the setting carried special meaning. The bridge that once symbolized conflict now represents cooperation and peace, and the presence of young people from both nations helped reinforce that message.
Projects like this remind Scouts that service can take many forms. Sometimes it means working on trails or helping neighbors. Other times, it means preserving symbols that represent friendship and shared history.
For Troop 107, the Remagen flag dedication was a chance to contribute to a place where history, remembrance, and hope meet, while strengthening the bonds of Scouting that cross borders and cultures.
As the ceremony concluded, Scouts from Troop 107 and their Pfadfinder friends gathered for a bbq and fellowship in food and songs, and both Troop 107 and Stamm Albert Schweitzer are already talking about future hikes and campouts together.
The new flags will soon fly above the museum grounds, visible from the riverbank and the town beyond. For those who took part in the ceremony, they represent not just two nations, but a shared commitment to the ideals that Scouting strives to teach: friendship, service, and peace.
