On June 8th, we celebrate World Oceans Day—a day to recognize the vital role our oceans play for life on Earth and to inspire action for their protection.

World Oceans Day was first proposed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and has been officially recognized by the United Nations since 2009. Its purpose is to highlight the importance of healthy oceans for our climate, biodiversity, and well-being, and to raise awareness about the threats they face, such as pollution, overfishing, and climate change.

More than 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. Despite covering over 70% of Earth’s surface, the vast majority of the ocean is still a mystery to us, making it one of the least understood places on our planet. The ocean is home to the majority of animal life on Earth. While oceans contain only about 1% of the planet’s total biomass, they are home to around 78% of all animal biomass, making them the largest habitat for animals on Earth.

🌍Yesterday, on the 22nd of May, was the International Day for Biological Diversity🌎

More than one third (!) of all animal and plant species worldwide are considered endangered. Species extinction is accelerating – and we all share the responsibility to act.

What truly shook our founder Lukasz Belza was a conversation with scientist Friedrich Bohn from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), who told him that the current extinction rate is estimated to be at least 100 times higher than the natural baseline – and likely far more.

Plastic pollution in our oceans is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time🌍 🌊

When our founder .belza visited the ThankU partner project in Indonesia last December, where they remove plastic from the ocean, he was once again reminded of how crucial it is to take action. He shared his impressions with our ThankU ambassador Gero Hesse via email while he was still in Indonesia – and his immediate reaction? “This topic is so important – let’s do a podcast about it!” 🎙️
Said and done! On the evening of December 23, while Lukasz was still in Asia, they recorded an episode of the SAATKORN podcast.
