As part of the Next Level visit, we also had a public panel to discuss the global impact of Hip Hop. Our American guests and local artists talked about their personal relationships with the culture, variations of Hip Hop in different regions and across the globe, and answered questions from the audience. Here are our main take-aways from this panel:

🗺️ Hip Hop is not just ONE homogenous culture. There are regional variations even in the U.S. with different styles and characteristics, almost like dialects of the same language. And that translates also globally.
🔎 History & traditions play an important part. It’s important to understand the roots of Hip Hop culture, especially when you’re not part of the Black and Brown communities of origin. And it’s never too late to learn more about the history that shaped the culture, even if you’ve already been active in the scene for a while. Knowing the background can give you a different kind of access to Hip Hop. The culture doesn’t need guests (because guests can leave) but people who want to become part of the community, learn the traditions, build on them, and continue them.
🌪️ Hip Hop culture is dynamic and always changing. It’s a reflection of society so it develops over time and together with the circumstances of its communities.
🤝 The Next Level workshops provided an opportunity to advance skills and for intercultural exchange but also to build new networks and create community locally. Artists from Stuttgart and the region participated, got to know each other, and can continue to collaborate long after Next Level is back in the U.S.
🤩 The local Hip Hop scene here is alive and well. The American artists were impressed by the cameradery, openness, and mutual support in the community. Beginners feel welcome, experts are humble.

🤝At the core of the Next Level Hip Hop residency in Germany were our workshops here in Stuttgart. Over the course of several days, young local artists had the opportunity to work with Hip Hop artists/educators from the United States. Brown Jewel taught production and shared her beatmaking secrets, emcees perfected their freestyles with -The Only BS You Can Trust- , Kelli Forman let dancers‘ feet fly, and writers created a beautiful graffiti piece with Demetrius Felder . Konee Rok documented the residency for Next Level and spontaneously threw in a filmmaking session due to popular request.

The workshops provided room to learn more about techniques and each other, connect over the shared passion for Hip Hop culture, and create mutual understanding. To close out the project with a bang, our participants presented their new skills with a performance at the 4 the Circle – City Dance Festival.

What’s your very first memory connected to music? And what feeling does it bring back instantly? On May 8, students and festival visitors explored the connection between sound and emotions at our interactive workshop “Music, Mood & Memory” at the .

We were thrilled to welcome Carolyn and Andy London, founders of the award-winning New York animation studio London Squared Productions, who gave an inspiring behind-the-scenes look at how music and sound can completely transform emotion, sharpen storytelling, and elevate films.

The workshop kicked off with a lively round of “Name That Tune,” where the audience shared memories, emotions, and moods sparked by iconic songs. Soon after, participants teamed up to experiment with scoring the same animated film scene using different music choices. The results were incredible: the mood shifted entirely depending on the soundtrack.

The session was rounded off with a screening of the deeply personal animated short film A Letter To Colleen, in which Andy London revisits the events of his 18th birthday in an attempt to finally put old demons to rest.

Thank you to and , our cooperation partner ITFS, and everyone who participated!
