(2/2) After the official part, it was time for lively conversations, music by PaperMoon SwingCombo, food and drinks. Guests could also try their luck at our quiz wheel with questions about the United States, take a picture with the Founding Fathers, snack on fresh popcorn or play lawn games such as corn hole. The rose garden at Hospitalhof provided the perfect backdrop for a pleasant summer celebration. Overall, a wonderful opportunity for everyone to meet old friends and make new ones.

(1/2) Last week, we celebrated 250 Years USA and 80 Years Amerikahaus & DAZ Stuttgart together with U.S. Consulate Frankfurt . Among the invited guests were DAZ members, scholarship alumni, cooperation partners, and representatives from politics, civil society, and business.

To start off the program, the color guard presented the flags and American opera singer Joseph Tancredi performed both national anthems. DAZ board chair Dr. Florian Stegmann and U.S. Consul General Brian Heath welcomed our guests with opening remarks. Dr. Stegmann encouraged the audience to continue writing the German-American story, and CG Heath reflected on the joint history of the Amerikahaus and the DAZ here in Stuttgart and how they mirror the transatlantic partnership. We also had greetings from Landtag von Baden-Württemberg and Stuttgart - meine Stadt . President of the State Parliament Thomas Strobl spoke about the principles of the Declaration of Independence and their relevance for democracy until today, while First Mayor Dr. Fabian Mayer talked about the close ties between the city of Stuttgart and the United States.

Between Libraries, Research and Society 🌍📚

Restrictions on books and library collections raise important questions about access to knowledge, education, and the role of libraries. While book bans have become an increasingly discussed topic in the United States in recent years, similar debates about influence on library collections can also be observed in other contexts.

As part of the Science Festival, the ifa Library hosted the hybrid event "Banned Books: Censorship and Its Impact on Science” in cooperation with the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Zentrum / James-F.-Byrnes-Institut (DAZ).

Dr. Jennifer Gouck gave a presentation on book bans in the United States, highlighting how restrictions on literature can affect access to diverse perspectives and the representation of marginalised communities.
Kai Schnier discussed the German perspective on censorship and access to information, drawing connections between historical experiences and current debates around libraries, education, and cultural institutions. The discussion that followed invited participants to further explore these questions from different perspectives.

Am 16. Juni war Prof. Dr. Benjamin Dahlke (Uni Eichstätt) in Stuttgart zu Gast, um die Rolle von Religion in den USA zu beleuchten und deren Einfluss auf die anstehenden Midterm Elections im Herbst zu analysieren.
•
Zu Beginn des Vortrags ging Benjamin Dahlke auf die Bedeutung von Religion für Politik und Gesellschaft in den USA ein. Er erklärte, dass Religion bei Wahlentscheidungen eine wichtige Rolle spielt und zeigte anhand von Beispielen wie „In God we trust“ oder „God bless America“, wie stark Religion im amerikanischen Alltag verankert ist.

Anschließend stellte er dar, dass die USA heute nicht mehr so christlich sind wie früher. Zwar gehört die größte Bevölkerungsgruppe weiterhin einer christlichen Konfession an, gleichzeitig nimmt jedoch die religiöse Vielfalt durch Zuwanderung zu. Auch die Zahl der Menschen ohne religiöse Bindung ist in den vergangenen Jahren deutlich gestiegen. Am Beispiel der Politikerin Ilhan Omar verdeutlichte er zudem, dass die Religionszugehörigkeit von Politiker*innen das Wahlverhalten beeinflussen kann.

Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt lag auf den verschiedenen religiösen Gruppen in den USA. Dabei ging Dahlke auf Konfessionslose sowie auf Evangelikale, Mainline Protestants und Katholiken ein und erläuterte deren politische Bedeutung. Abschließend betonte er, dass Religion weiterhin ein wichtiger Faktor für politische Einstellungen und Wahlentscheidungen in den USA ist.

Die Veranstaltung endete mit einer lebhaften Fragerunde, in der das Publikum die Chance nutze, mit Benjamin Dahlke in den Austausch zu treten, um bereits behandelte Aspekte erneut aufzugreifen und neue Perspektiven zu diskutieren.

Die exportorientierte Wirtschaft Baden-Württembergs treffen geostrategischen Verschiebungen direkt. Wie sichern wir im Südwesten innen- und außenpolitische Handlungsfähigkeit und Stabilität? Pride Month at the DAZ Library continues with these recommendations:

Since 2021, book bans in the U.S. have increased significantly. Implemented under the guise of protecting minors, they have primarily affected public and school libraries. However, academic institutions are not safe from them either. Even in Germany there have been isolated attempts to gain control over library collections.

On occasion of the Stuttgart Science Festival, we will consider this topic from the perspective of both the U.S. and Germany. Dr. Jennifer Gouck will give a short input before she joins us, alongside journalist Kai Schnier, for a discussion of book bans in the context of education, science, and academic libraries.

Book Bans - Zensur, Bibliotheken und der Zugang zu Wissen

Seit 2021 nehmen sogenannte „Book Bans“ in den USA deutlich zu und betreffen vor allem öffentliche und schulische Bibliotheken. Auch in Deutschland gibt es vereinzelt Diskussionen über Einflussnahmen auf Bibliotheksbestände.

Im Rahmen des Wissenschaftsfestivals werfen wir gemeinsam mit dem Deutsch-Amerikanisches Zentrum / James-F.-Byrnes-Institut einen transnationalen Blick auf diese Entwicklungen und fragen: Wie äußern sich Zensur und Book Bans konkret? Welche Folgen haben Eingriffe in Bibliotheksbestände für Wissenschaft, Bildung und Demokratie?

Die Veranstaltung beginnt mit Führungen durch die DAZ- und die ifa Bibliothek, die Einblicke in Bestände, Angebote und Schwerpunkte beider Einrichtungen geben.

Im Anschluss folgt ab 19:00 Uhr ein englischsprachiger Impulsvortrag mit Podiumsdiskussion, bei dem Expert:innen aus Deutschland und den USA aktuelle Entwicklungen zu Book Bans und deren Auswirkungen auf Bibliotheken und den freien Zugang zu Wissen diskutieren.
