Meet our space projects and the teams during our introcuctury event this Wednesday.
You will have time to ask questions about specific areas and possible tasks within the project of your choosing.

Introductury event
When: 29.04.2026 at 17:30
Place: Pfaffenwaldring 29, Mediathek (room 0.49)

There will also be a chance to get a tour of our workshop and see the (flight) hardware of our projects.

Excited to meet you there!

If you don’t have time this week but are interested to see what is possible, take a look at our website www.ksat-stuttgart.de and contact us via [email protected]

Next Steps in the SOURCE-2 development 🛰️📝

From Requirements to Reality! Our latest monthly Status-Update was all about setting our mission on the right trajectory. Members from all subsystems gathered up to share their recent progress.

We’ve been working hard on finalizing our requirements and closing the feedback (RIDs) from our review, the PRR, that was held in last November. By perfecting these guiderails now, we’ve set a rock-solid foundation to kick off our design phase and start getting our hands on some actual satellite hardware.

Progress update on ATHENE: our first rover is really taking shape! 🤖

With support from , we’ve worked hard for the last year to kick off a platform that should get our association competition-ready soon.

On the hardware and design side, we’re integrating topology optimizations for lighter, stiffer parts, metal 3D printing for complex, durable components, stereo vision for depth perception, ultralight sandwich structures, and a full-system software simulation to speed up validation and iteration. On the software side, we’re working on implementing different navigation and mapping algorithms within our ROS 2 framework, so the rover can perceive its surroundings and navigate autonomously. The additional simulation gives us an impression on how the implementation onto the final hardware will look like.

Big thanks to team for their support!

To promote young talent and share what we’re learning, we also took part in Tag der Wissenschaft 2025 and Space Day Stuttgart 2025, where we had great conversations with students, educators, and industry folks. Feel free to visit us at the coming events this year.

More milestones coming soon!

Are you ready to see satellite flight hardware being manufactured?

The SOURCE team is currently preparing the flight hardware for the housekeeping and communication boards, which will conclude the manufacturing process for the self-developed components.
A big thank you to Beta Layout for supporting our development and manufacturing by providing the PCBs.
We are also very excited to have Beta Layout’s support again this year and look forward to sharing the new PCB designs and project developments we will achieve together.

Merry Christmas for the KSat team🎄

We wish you a wonderful time with your family and friends!

On the first picture you see what our FOX team has been up to. They successfully developed a Ferrofluid mirror. For example they are here mirroring our FOX logo with a Christmas hat shown on a computer🧑‍🎄🦊

Right before Christmas, we want to officially introduce you to one of our projects that has been in progress for one year already and reached a major milestone in the last couple of weeks.
Of course, we are talking about our rover project ATHENE 🤖🎄

ATHENE is designed as a demonstration platform for key rover technologies such as chassis design and advanced sensor systems for mapping and navigation. Funded by the Innovation Campus Mobility of the Future and developed in collaboration with the Institute of Space Systems (IRS) at the University of Stuttgart, the project allows us to work with state-of-the-art sensors and powerful on-board computers.

A major milestone has been reached in the latest months: ATHENE became capable of driving and can now be remotely operated using a controller.

The rover chassis itself is treated as a payload and serves as a reusable platform for future projects and competitions like the European Rover Challenge. Currently, ATHENE is mainly used at demonstration events such as Science Day at the University of Stuttgart to inspire school and university students to get involved in robotics and space technology.
To navigate unknown terrain, ATHENE uses LiDAR, time-of-flight sensors, and stereo cameras. The data is processed on-board using SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), enabling the rover to map its surroundings and localize itself.

ATHENE is an important step for our association toward future competitions and continued experience in space robotics.

Last week, we were at the Aerospace Congress of the IHK Region Stuttgart as a local junior group. There, we were able to hold many interesting conversations with participants who are thinking about entering the aerospace industry, as well as with the exhibiting companies and institutions from the region.

We also had the opportunity to attend the lectures of various established aerospace companies as well as innovative newcomers in the industry. At our small booth, we presented our current and past projects to show how we organize the promotion of young talent and practical training alongside our studies.

If you would also like to work on an exciting space project during your studies, feel free to contact us!

Many thanks once again to the IHK and the for the opportunity to be there with a booth.

CASIMAR’s first trip to the LUNA-Facility

From the 10th to the 12th of September 2025, a CASIMAR team of 10 university students had the opportunity to conduct the first student-organized experimental campaign at the LUNA facility. Over the course of three days, two sample-collecting tools developed by the KSat team, as well as two further experiments from BEARS e.V. and MoonAixperts e.V., were tested in a total of three simulated moonwalks. In the first run, a member of KSat took on the role of an astronaut to carry out the carefully prepared student-designed EVA procedure. In the second run, this procedure was performed by ESA staff wearing ATLAS lunar analog suits. In both cases, the use of our tools went exceptionally well. Besides the tool tests, a primary objective of the campaign was to familiarise student team members with the preparation and ex*****on of such a campaign, so that we can carry out similar campaigns more frequently and more easily in the future. The next CASIMAR campaign in the LUNA Analog Facility will hopefully take place in late 2026/early 2027. Preparation for such a potential second campaign has already begun.

This campaign would not have been possible without the support of DLR and ESA. We are very happy that we, the student spaceflight community of Germany, can contribute to getting the LUNA Analog Facility up and running!

More about the campaign can be read here:
