According to the UN, there are nearly 30 million refugees around the world, of which over half are children under the age of 18. Refugees are people who have fled their home country due to violence or persecution, and under international law they have the right to seek safety in another country. Today, we recognize the plight of the millions of people worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes and are often living in vulnerable situations. Today is a call for the global community to work to ensure that no one is forced to leave their homes in the first place, but when violence or persecution does arise, that people are welcomed into safety in other countries, where they are treated with dignity and respect. This is also a call for each of us individually to do what we can to welcome refugees into our own communities, building empathy and understanding of what refugees are going through and finding ways to directly serve the needs of the most vulnerable.
