On Saturday, September 12th, The Alpi Marittime Protected Area Junior Rangers held a night-time activity at the Crava Morozzo Nature Reserve focused on moths.

🐛It was a BioBlitz led by Park Ranger Beatrice, a Lepidoptera expert; the event included a presentation on the key characteristics of moths and a monitoring session using the light-trapping technique.

🌄Today 15th September is
European Youth in Parks Day 2026:

🦉This years theme is: Parks after Dark!
An entirely new cycle of life comes alive in Killarney National Park (Nature night shift).

🦸‍♂️The KNP Education centre is joining the celebration of European Youth in the Parks Day today and all this week, focusing on young people and communities.

🫵🧑‍🔬The team will spend one day leading a local secondary school on fieldwork for their Leaving Certificate Biology, three days leading other Leaving Certificate classes on their Geography River Study on the Owengarriff River.
🧑‍🔬A day in Muckross with MTU Kerry leading BSc Wildlife Biology students on Ecology fieldwork.

🐾🦡🦇Tonight: Tuesday 15th the Education Team will lead a Nocturnal Nature Ramble in the National Park for a local community group. The “ramble” will introduce participants to some of the nocturnal creatures that become active in the National Park after dark. They will use bat detectors and night vision binoculars to get a deeper insight into the activity in the Park after Dark

✨Today is European Youth in Parks Day!✨

Let’s take a moment to celebrate what our Parks and Protected Areas do for young people. They can improve mental and physical health, they can provide space to spend with family and friends, they protect nature that supports all life, and they connect young people to the natural world. 👣🦉🦔🌳

This connection is mutualistic as young people are also very important for the continued support, maintenance and preservation of our Parks and Protected Areas. This European Youth in Parks Day, the EUROPARC Youth Council would like to highlight Parks After Dark and how young people experience a shifting baseline syndrom: where light pollution is normalised and the night is perceived as "empty". 🌜💫🐾🌠🏕️

European Youth in Parks Day promotes actions and activities across the EUROPARC membership. This year we have:
* Yoga under the stars
* Stargazing
* Nature restoration
* Launching new Junior Ranger group
* Hiking together with other young people
* and more!

Let’s continue to work together with intergenerational efforts to protect and restore our environmental and cultural heritage. 🤝👍🏁
