EuroNatur Wir engagieren uns für grenzüberschreitenden Naturschutz in Europa. We are committed to cross-border nature conservation in Europe. Future needs nature. Danke!

English: We are committed to connecting nature and people in a peaceful Europe – beyond national borders. Our donors support us in this endeavour. The growth-oriented way we lead our lives and run our economies at this point in history is characterized by ruthless exploitation of natural resources and has resulted in the pervasive destruction of nature as well as in drastic climate change. People

all around the world are feeling the resultant adverse effects. Nature is the natural resource base on which all humans depend. Species and habitat diversity are prerequisites of a quality environment. Our aim is a Europe that hosts free-flowing rivers, pristine forests and diverse cultural landscapes and that offers sufficient space for wild animals and migrating birds within these and other ecosystems. Cross-border conservation work, however, requires a long breath. That's why we depend on your support. This could be a financial commitment or volunteer activities at EuroNatur. Please use your options. This will help us to remain a strong and independent voice for Europe's nature. You become part of a networked European civil society, which works hard for the preservation of all our livelihoods. Many Thanks! Deutsch:

Construction in the Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape is on hold — great news! But the threat to Albania’s nature remains and the case is far from being closed...

Annette Spangenberg, Head of Freshwater Programme at EuroNatur, explains why.

"Albania is not for sale!" This is the message that thousands of Albanians have been conveying through weeks of peaceful protests in the country and beyond.

Today, the European Parliament backed this call in its vote on its annual report on Albania, sending one of its strongest signals to date:

Progress towards Albania's EU membership will depend on effective environmental protection, respect for the rule of law, public participation, and transparency in decision-making.

At the centre of this is the Delta, particularly the Vjosa–Narta Protected Landscape, which is one of the country's most ecologically valuable natural areas.

Members of the European Parliament from several political groups have expressed serious concern over ongoing developments and are calling for a moratorium on new permits, construction and development in protected areas until Albania repeals the controversial amendments to its Law on Protected Areas and fully aligns with EU nature protection standards.

🗨️ "The message from Brussels is simple: EU membership is not only about opening and closing chapters. It's about demonstrating in practice that European standards are respected when it matters most", says Viktor Berishaj, Senior EU Policy Officer at EuroNatur Foundation.

🦩

The wave of solidarity for the Vjosa Delta inside and outside Albania has grown bigger than anything anyone could have imagined, capturing global headlines. International attention has arrived, and the momentum is shifting directly to the streets.

June 20 is shaping up to be another massive day of action, and the energy is being channelled exactly where it matters most: supporting the local movement on the ground in Albania.

Here is how you can plug into the global momentum:

👉 Support the local efforts in Tirana: If you are in Albania, join the citizen-led protests happening daily and on Saturday, June 20.
👉Sign the petition: Add your name to the global demand. (Link in the comments!)
👉Write an online letter to Edi Rama: Demand a permanent halt to the destruction. (Link in the comments!)
👉Show your solidarity online: This Saturday, post a photo from wherever you are in the world using the hashtag .

❗ The fight is far from over. Even though construction work is currently paused, the development project in this protected and ecologically valuable area has not been cancelled.

Other destructive projects for the Vjosa Delta are already in the pipeline. As long as the weakened law on protected areas in Albania remains in place, this threat will persist—and it could jeopardise any protected landscape in Albania. Let's keep the pressure on.

What are primary and old-growth forests? 👉 Swipe through the photos to learn more

💡 Bonus facts:

There are actually 7 measurable indicators for old-growth forests 🌲

The 3 main indicators are:

🌳 They are predominantly composed of native species.
🌳 They have a high proportion and diversity of standing and lying deadwood.
🌳 They are characterised by a high volume of very old or very large trees.

In addition, there are complementary indicators, such as complex structures, e.g. many canopy layers.

If a forest shows all three main indicators plus at least two complementary ones, it has at least old-growth quality. And if there are no visible signs of human intervention, it can be called primary.

🍀 The Nature Restoration Regulation is a historic opportunity to restore nature across Europe.

EU Member States must submit their national restoration plans by 1 September 2026 – and the clock ⏰ is ticking.

We examined the costs of restoration projects in Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia and Poland.

Our new report presents an alternative methodology for calculating national financing needs for restoration.

In 2024, the EU made history by adopting the Nature Restoration Regulation, committing to restore degraded ecosystems – forests, rivers, seas, farmland and even cities – by 2050.

EU Member States must submit their national restoration plans by 1 September 2026 – and the clock is ticking ⌛

One element will be crucial to their successful implementation: adequate funding 💰

EuroNatur and CEE Bankwatch Network examined restoration projects in 5 countries to provide cost estimates for better planning.

Main gaps that were identified:
👉 Reliance on EU funding for nature restoration and conservation
👉 Lack of up-to-date data on habitat status
👉 Lack of capacity for preparation and implementation of the plans

Unless these gaps are urgently addressed, the EU will not meet its restoration targets.

Today is International Lynx Day! 🎉

This very emblematic cat can steal anyone’s heart with its beautiful eyes and tufted ears 😺 Did you know that there are four species of lynx? The Canada lynx and the bobcat roam in North America, while in Europe we can find the Iberian lynx and the Eurasian lynx.

At EuroNatur, we have been working for many years to conserve the Balkan lynx, a critically endangered subspecies of the Eurasian lynx found in Albania, North Macedonia and Kosovo. In fact, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Balkan Lynx Recovery Programme, another reason to celebrate! 🎉

Two decades of intensive work with our partners PPNEA, MES, ERA and KORA have allowed us to better understand the Balkan lynx and the requirements for its successful conservation, including the need to improve habitat connectivity, reduce illegal killings, and increase genetic diversity.

With less than 50 individuals left in the wild, the Balkan lynx is critically endangered, yet the international collaboration of the Balkan Lynx Recovery Programme brings hope for a future where this animal thrives again in the Balkan forests, with more and better connected protected areas where it can find refuge, prey and mates.

On the occasion of its 20th Anniversary, the Balkan Lynx Recovery Programme will be sharing exciting stories in the following weeks; make sure to follow them on Facebook!

Happy International Lynx Day, and happy 20 year Anniversary to the Balkan Lynx Recovery Programme! 🥳

Yesterday, the 3rd Oder Conference took place 💧

Among other things, we had a valuable exchange of knowledge and experience about a key new element: the EU Nature Restoration Regulation, which can support the restoration of ecologically valuable habitats along the Oder River and its wider catchment area.

With representatives from all three countries, we discussed both challenges and opportunities.

"The Nature Restoration Regulation can become a catalyst for cross-border cooperation – helping to strengthen the Oder region as a living and resilient landscape," says Theresa Wagner, project coordinator of Oder protection at Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland.

💚 Thanks to Arnika, Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland, Fundacja EkoRozwoju and EuroNatur for the organisation
💚 Thanks also to the Ministerstwo Klimatu i Środowiska and the Komisja Europejska w Polsce for their patronage.

💚 And thanks to Koalicja Ratujmy Rzeki / Save the Rivers Coalition for their support in Poland.

PPNEA turns 35, but instead of celebrating, they are standing up for one of Albania’s most valuable natural areas – together with thousands of people ✊

Since it was founded in 1991, Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania has been a pioneering force for nature in Albania. As the country's first environmental NGO, it has played an important role in protecting Albania’s natural heritage and supporting conservation across the country.

This anniversary, however, comes under extraordinary circumstances:

Every day, the people at PPNEA are putting all their energy into standing up for the -Narta Protected Landscape against ongoing environmental destruction. This reflects their unwavering commitment to nature.

The Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape is a unique ecosystem of international importance, providing vital habitat for diverse wildlife, including migratory birds and other rare species.

At a time when this irreplaceable landscape is under severe threat, PPNEA once again demonstrates leadership, courage, and integrity – mobilising public awareness, organising peaceful protests, and uniting voices in Albania and beyond under the powerful message: 💧

Happy Birthday, PPNEA! 🎉 As a long-standing partner, EuroNatur is proud to stand alongside you.
