Interpret Europe

Interpret Europe Empowering all who inspire meaningful connections with Europe’s
natural and cultural heritage to shape our common future

At its best, learning happens where people experience 'the real thing', in venues such as nature parks, historic sites, zoos or museums. Heritage interpretation facilitates such experiences using a broad range of approaches from guided walks to sophisticated exhibitions. Interpret Europe is an organization encouraging exchange with professionals, enterprises and universities from more than 40 countries about ways of making heritage more meaningful to people.

How does a course look when you bring together cavers, mountain leaders, guides, museum educators and teachers from different places and perspectives?

In Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark, the answer was simple and beautiful. A week of learning, sharing and exploring where a structured course met the Mediterranean rhythm of life.

Different professions, different backgrounds, but one shared curiosity about nature, heritage and how we connect people with places.

And of course, in true Mediterranean spirit, every day ended with a little after-party under the Cretan sky. 🌿🎶

A wonderful reminder that learning is not only about schedules and sessions, but also about people, culture and the moments we share together.

What remains after a symposium?
Not just presentations or slides — but clearer questions, shared language, and some concrete progress.

The Interpret Europe online symposium was conceived as a new format: a space to explore one subject in greater depth than our usual conference structure allows — not instead of it, but alongside it.

130 participants from 20 countries engaged with one focused question:
“The role of narratives in 21st century heritage interpretation.”
Around 50 colleagues actively contributed to the programme.

The aim was not simply to exchange views, but to move the discussion forward. Over these days, we began to add more clarity and substance to what many describe as an emerging narrative approach in heritage interpretation.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the intellectual work of these days. And a special thank you to all those working behind the scenes — coordination, technical support, communication, moderation. An event like this depends on a great deal of invisible work. Your commitment made this possible.

What to expect next: the proceedings (deadline for sending the full papers: 9 March), the gradual publication of presentations on Interpret Europe’s YouTube channel, and further reflections in upcoming posts.

Interpret Europe in Astana: A fruitful exchange with Kazakhstan's guides! 🇰🇿

We were delighted to take part in the II Capital Forum of Guides and Tour Guides in Kazakhstan, where we introduced the principles of heritage interpretation to over 120 passionate professionals.

Our Outreach Coordinator and experienced trainer, Max Dubravko Fijacko, led a session and workshop on the value-based approach. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Local guides immediately connected with this method of creating deeper, more meaningful experiences.

We look forward to future collaboration with Kazakhstan's vibrant guiding community!

Thank you, Eurasian Tourism Association for the invitation and warm hospitality. 🤝

As you step through the doors of Club Farense, you'll enter a world where time seems to have stood still. Rooms where ci**rs were once smoked, cards were played, and debates were held, will be filled for three days with presentations, workshops, and countless opportunities for informal networking. Reconnect with old friends from across Europe and beyond, and forge new connections that will enrich both your professional and personal life.

IE conference coordinator Bettina Lehnes and Peter Seccombe recently spent a few days in Faro meeting IE’s great Portuguese partners Fulvia and Vasco to ensure the conference will be a truly memorable experience. They met enthusiastic people eager to share their culture with you on our excursions into the diverse surroundings of Faro.

We look forward to welcoming you to Club Farense in Faro from April 16-19, 2026!
