Looking at nature through the lenses of education opens new ways of understanding the world around us.

Through Sabine Plattner African Charities (S**C), this perspective becomes a platform for learning and exchange. Rooted in the belief that local knowledge is key to sustainable change, S**C works across three connected areas:
📚 It supports early childhood development
🌳 It strengthens conservation education in schools
🌱 It advances research on biodiversity

Each initiative is shaped together with local communities and experts.
What began as a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the Congo Basin has grown into a long-term commitment by Sabine Plattner to conservation and community development.
Today, S**C contributes to protecting biodiversity while creating access to conservation education across Africa.

Reframe. Rethink. Resolve. Remember. Regenerate.

For the Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika at UCT, these five words mark a decade of learning and growth.

Today, we celebrate the very first graduates of the design thinking program in Cape Town, followed by more than 700 students who have been part of this journey.

During the last ten years, the d-school Afrika reframed the design thinking approach and enriched it with African perspectives and innovations. It also rethought sustainability through practice and place, visible in its 6-Star Green Rated building and Africa’s first d.confestival.

For its next decade, the team aims to strengthen Afrikan visibility and contribution by launching the Afrikan Chapter of the Global Design Thinking Alliance.

Congratulations on your anniversary, dear HP d-school Afrika at UCT 🎉

"Over the last decade, we have seen students leave the d-school transformed. Here, they discovered confidence in their own ability to create change. As we look to the future, we are incredibly excited." - Richard Perez, d-school Afrika Founding Director

Marking its tenth anniversary this year, the Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika at UCT hosts the Afrikan Design Thinking Convening 2026 on 1–3 June. The event will bring together educators and practitioners to reflect on design thinking grounded in Afrikan contexts. We can't wait for next week's celebrations to start!

👉 The online experience is open to all. You can view the full program and register for the online sessions with this link: https://dschoolafrika.org/afrikan-design-thinking-convening-2026/

International Museum Day will feel different in Potsdam this year.

On 17 May, Museum Barberini and DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam open their doors not only to art, but to shared experience. With free access, dance presentations, and collective painting, the museums become spaces for participation, exchange, and creativity.

As part of Oscar Murillo’s exhibition, the Social Mapping project invites visitors at Museum Barberini to contribute to a collective artwork: a long shared canvas that, once completed, will return to DAS MINSK.

A collaboration between Museum Barberini and DAS MINSK, the project celebrates access to art and community participation.

To the Hasso-Plattner-Institut graduates of 2026: today is yours 🎓
You join close to 3000 alumni who came through HPI before you.
You finished a digital engineering program that prepared you for your next chapter.
You worked across data, systems, digital health, cybersecurity, and AI.
You shared your ideas with peers from Europe and the world on a modern and open campus that encouraged exchange and bold ideas.
Some of you joined research groups. Some of you dipped your toes into the startup world. Some of you spent time researching at MIT, Stanford, UCT, UCI, or Mount Sinai.
All of you carry what HPI gave you into research, new policies, and the everyday work of European technology. All of you are now part of what Europe's digital sovereignty needs.
“Europe needs places where talent from around the world can think, conduct research, and shape the future freely – and Potsdam will be such a place,” says Prof. Hasso Plattner. The Hasso Plattner Foundation backs HPI since its early days to make exactly this possible.
Whatever you choose to do next in research, academia, policy or entrepreneurship, the door stays open.
Congratulations 🎉

Earlier this year, the Dzanga Forest Elephant Project, together with WWF and local partners, launched a new environmental education program at Dzanga‑Sangha, reaching over 500 children from five local schools.
Through films, quizzes, workshops, and conversations with local experts, conservation became something the next generation can feel connected to.

The enthusiasm from the young learners and teachers suggests this program can endure over time. And that is exactly the kind of long-term approach the Hasso Plattner Foundation is proud to support. 🌿

Many thanks to the team on the ground for sharing the footage and the milestone.

As a foundation that runs museums, invests for the long term, and supports digital health initiatives, what's on our bookshelves?

Art history. The science of giving. How to think about risk. Why AI won't replace us. And yes, everything in-between.
Our team is small. But the range of topics we think about is always growing.

We hire curious people across disciplines because our work spans digital education, conservation in Africa, art & culture, and long-term investment.

Caring for our planet starts with education.
And S**C EduConservation is putting this into practice 🌱📚🔍

This Earth Day, we highlight their work to bring education and conservation closer to classrooms and children across six countries in Africa. They do this through country specific learning toolkits grounded in regional knowledge and classroom needs.

When learning tools reflect everyday classroom realities, teachers can focus on what matters most: meaningful education.

Swipe through to explore how these toolkits take shape.

With the Foundation’s continued support, each step contributes to a shared goal of making conservation learning accessible and engaging for children.
