Elke Heidenreich

Why are "old" songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s all the rage these days? Reading this book might give you an idea why:

Nick Hornby: High Fidelity

From the blurb:

"Reading High Fidelity is like listening to a great single. You know it's wonderful from the minute it goes on, and as soon as it's over you want to hear it again because it makes you feel young, and grown-up, and puts a stupid grin on your face all at the same time. If this book was a record, we would be calling it an instant classic. Because that's what it is." Suzanne Moore, Guardian

🎼It's just another manic Monday... or is it? Well, no, because here's our latest book recommendation to save your day:

Marina Lewycka: A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian.

From the blurb:

"Two years after my mother died, my father fell in love with a glamorous blonde Ukranian divorcee. He was eighty-four and she was thirty-six. She exploded into our lives like a fluffy pink gr***de, churning up the murky water, bringing to the surface a sludge of sloughed-off memories, giving the family ghosts a kick up the backside."

Sisters Vera and Nadezhda must put aside a lifetime of feuding to save their émigré engineer father from voluptuous gold-digger Valentina. With her proclivity for green satin underwear and boil-in-the-bag cuisine, she will stop at nothing in her pursuit of Western wealth.

But the sisters' campaign to oust Valentina unearths family secrets, uncovers fifty years of Europe's darkest history and sends them back to roots they'd much rather forget...

🍂"The falling leaves drift by the window, the autumn leaves of red and gold [...], I miss you most of all my darling when autumn leaves start to fall..." 🍂 (Autumn Leaves, lyrics by Johnny Mercer, 1950)

Time for some autumn romance, don't you think?🍂💞🍂

Cecelia Ahern: How to Fall in Love

From the blurb:

Christine Rose is crossing the Ha'penny Bridge in Dublin late one night when she sees a stranger, Adam, poised to jump. Desperate to help, she talks him into a reckless deal: if he gives her two weeks - till his 35th birthday - she'll prove life is worth living.

But as the clock ticks, what Christine has really promised seems impossible...

How often does someone you meet transform your life?

Ayad Akhtar: American Dervish

From the blurb:

Hayat is living a life dominated by school and baseball in Midwest America. His existence is ruffled only by the tension between his parents. Then Mina appears and changes everything.

Mina is beautiful, independent and fleeing a disastrous marriage in Pakistan. Her presence is healing, and her sense of spirituality resonates with Hayat as nothing has before. But this new sense of purpose is mingled with a growing infatuation for the woman he calls Aunt.

When Mina catches the eye of another, Hayat's jealousy is fuelled by the prejudices of those around him. If he acts, the impact will ricochet through his community with catastrophic consequences...

To read, or not to read? That is not the question, is it? While this choice is an easy one, some decisions can be hard to make, as the protagonist in today's book has to learn:

Jodi Picould: The book of two ways

From the blurb:

Every life has pivotal moments, choices that send you down one path or another. What if you had a chance to change the decisions you've made?

Dawn helps people prepare for a good death. But when she finds herself in mortal danger, the life that flashes before her eyes is not the one she shares in Boston with her beloved husband and daughter, but the life she left behind in Egypt fifteen years ago: a career in archeology, and a man she loved.

Safe again, Dawn finds herself faced with an unexpected decision: to go back home, to a world she knows... or to try to recapture the world she lost. But is there a cost to turning back time?

Dear readers, it's Monday again! But not any old Monday... today is the first day of our new "Read a book in English" campaign.
Here's to many exciting book discoveries... so, without much further ado:

Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera: Here's to us

From the blurb:

How much can change in two years?

Ben survived his fist year of college, but he's feeling more stuck than ever. His only saving grace is his writing partner, Mario, who's been giving him Spanish lessons and plenty of kisses. So why can't he stop thinking about a certain boy from the past?

Arthur is back in New York, ready to take the theatre world by storm. It sucks having to be apart from his boyfriend, but he knows their relationship is solid. Which is why it's no big deal when his ex-boyfriend Ben stumbles back into the picture, right?

Even as Ben and Arthur try to shake off the past, they keep running into each other in the present. Is the universe trying to tell them there's a do-over in their future?

Richard Ford: Canada

From the blurb:
"First, I'll tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then about the murders, which happened later.

It was more bad instincts and bad luck that lead to Dell Parsons' parents robbing a bank. They weren't reckless people, but in an instant, their actions alter fifteen-year-old Dell's sense of normal life forever. In the days that follow, he is saved before the authorities think to arrive. Driving across Montana, his life hurtles towards the unknown: a hotel in a deserted town, the violent and enigmatic Arthur Remlinger, and towards Canada itself. But, as Dell discovers, in this new world of secrets and upheaval, he is not the only one whose past lies on the other side of the border."
