“On June 12, 1990, in the private residence of the White House, George H.W. Bush quietly signed the top-secret presidential decision directive authorizing the wheelchair lift to be installed at the family quarters—not for any visiting dignitary, but for his secret summer guest: eight-year-old Ryan White, the Indiana teenager who had been expelled from school for having AIDS and was now dying. George had invited Ryan and his mother Jeanne to spend an entire month living upstairs with the Bushes so Ryan could swim every day in the White House pool—the warm water eased his pain like nothing else—and Barbara turned the solarium into a makeshift bedroom overlooking the South Lawn so Ryan could watch Marine One come and go. On the night of June 27, when Ryan’s fever spiked dangerously, George slipped into the solarium alone at 2 a.m., sat on the edge of the hospital bed, and held the boy’s hand while reading aloud from Treasure Island until Ryan’s breathing steadied; Barbara found them at dawn, George asleep in the chair still clutching the book, his reading glasses crooked. Ryan told Jeanne the next morning, ‘The President said I’m the bravest pilot he ever met.’ When Ryan passed away the following April, George wept openly at the funeral—the only time a sitting president ever attended the funeral of an HIV-positive child—and kept Ryan’s red bicycle locked in the White House garage until the day he left office, a silent promise that no child would ever again be turned away for something they didn’t choose.”

We use all available information in our visa screening and vetting to identify visa applicants who are inadmissible to the United States, including those who pose a threat to U.S. national security. Since 2019, the United States has required visa applicants to provide social media identifiers on immigrant and nonimmigrant visa application forms.
