In his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1962, peace activist and chemist Linus Pauling spoke about the importance of abolishing nuclear weapons.

Pauling was awarded the peace prize for his campaign against weapons of mass destruction. The use of the atom bomb against Japan marked a turning point for Pauling. Together with other scientists, he sought to end the arms race. He helped to found the Pugwash movement, which received the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to diminish the role of nuclear weapons in the international political arena.

Alva Myrdal is best known for her work on disarmament and nuclear and weapon-free zones, but did you know that the peace prize laureate was also a strong campaigner for women's rights?

She wrote a renowned book with her husband – economist and laureate Gunnar Myrdal – demanding radical reforms in family, housing and social policy. Its goal was to ensure that working-class parents could afford to have more children.

She also collaborated with an architect to plan a 'collective house' in Stockholm to help free women from domestic duties and support families, with communal facilities including child daycare, a laundry, cleaning services, a grocery store and even a restaurant.

UNITED PHOTO PRESS CELEBRA 36 ANOS COM A EXPOSIÇÃO INTERNACIONAL "AURA – O INSTANTE DA LUZ" NO MUSEU DE ELETRICIDADE DO FUNCHAL

FUNCHAL, MADEIRA – A United Photo Press, prestigiada organização internacional dedicada à promoção da fotografia artística e documental, celebra este ano o seu 36.º aniversário com a realização da Exposição Internacional de Fotografia "AURA – O Instante da Luz", que decorrerá durante o mês de outubro no emblemático Museu de Eletricidade do Funchal – Casa da Luz.

A exposição reunirá fotógrafos membros da United Photo Press provenientes de diversos países, contando igualmente com o apoio institucional e a presença confirmada de entidades oficiais da Região Autónoma da Madeira.

Inspirada no conceito filosófico de Walter Benjamin, AURA propõe uma reflexão sobre a autenticidade, a singularidade e a presença da obra de arte no espaço e no tempo. Num mundo marcado pela proliferação de imagens digitais efémeras, esta exposição pretende recuperar o valor do instante irrepetível, transformando a fotografia numa experiência de contemplação, memória e emoção.

No âmbito desta iniciativa, a United Photo Press abre excecionalmente 20 vagas para fotógrafos convidados que não sejam membros da organização. As candidaturas serão rigorosamente avaliadas pela direção artística, de acordo com o regulamento oficial, permitindo aos autores selecionados expor as suas obras em grande formato (70x100 cm ou 100x70 cm), lado a lado com fotógrafos internacionais da United Photo Press.

Reforçando a sua ligação à comunidade e à cultura madeirense, a exposição integra igualmente uma parceria institucional com a Associação Arca d'Ajuda, que este ano celebra o seu 15.º aniversário. No âmbito desta colaboração, a programação oficial da United Photo Press incluirá a exposição das fotografias vencedoras da VII Maratona Fotográfica da Arca d'Ajuda e a cerimónia de entrega de prémios. A VII Maratona Fotográfica decorrerá entre os dias 10 e 12 de julho, na emblemática freguesia de São Martinho, no Funchal, constituindo um dos mais relevantes eventos dedicados à fotografia na Região Autónoma da Madeira.

A edição de 2026 conta igualmente com a parceria do Amendoeira Clube de Golfe, que celebra este ano o seu 10.º aniversário, assinalando uma década de compromisso com a promoção do desporto e o desenvolvimento da comunidade. Esta colaboração traduz a partilha de valores entre as duas instituições, reforçando o compromisso comum de promover a cultura, a criatividade e a valorização do património através da fotografia.
