There should be open public discussion about the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on June 11, in a rare reference to the topic. That's what The Kyiv Independent writes.

https://kyivindependent.com/zelensky-backs-open-public-dialogue-on-lgbtq-rights-in-ukraine/

On social media, people were quite shocked about the news - positively. Activists cried and were touched. They all hope for a better future...

"We are all here together, we are defending the state, we are the same and we have absolutely the same rights, regardless of any prejudices held by people from the 15th century," President Volodymyr Zelensky said, in a rare public reference to the topic.

What's a "Living library"? It's an discussion on an open stage where people tell about their personal stories, like LGBTIQ* activists from Ukraine telling about their live in the midst of a war.

It offers an opportunity to make complex, sometimes distant world events more accessible through personal exchange. Through storytelling, people can reflect on their life experiences, contextualise them and compare them.

We had invited our guests from Ukraine last week to talk about their live in Ukraine, their experiences with the community in Munich when they participated in Munich Kyiv Q***r's "Volunteers' Workshop" and their plans for the future. In the past, the meetings with like-minded people from Munich have repeatedly inspired our Ukrainian friends to make concrete plans for their work in their own community.

Our guests’ contributions were very honest and personal. The exhaustion and psychological strain of the daily struggle for survival were palpable.

They spoke of the bare essentials needed just to get through the day; they talked about the drone attacks and the enormous need for psychological support. They told us about their work, which is geared towards the needs of q***r people.

Our five volunteers from Ukraine were grateful for the warm welcome they received from their host families and the many individuals who looked after them in Munich. And they were in love with Uwe, who guided them through the week with fatherly care. Alex said he had fallen in love with Munich.

Learning from one another, fighting together. That is the motto under which Munich Kyiv Q***r has been inviting q***r people from Ukraine to Munich for the “Volunteers Workshop” for years. The focus: volunteering. The aim: to show what the community can achieve thanks to the commitment of its members!

In the “Volunteers Blog”, our guests write about what moves them. was particularly impressed by the solidarity within the Munich community:

"There are places where, from the very first moment, you feel: I’m home. My first week in Munich was exactly like that. It was a rediscovery of myself – of that version of me that feels authentic, at peace, and exactly where I belong.

The atmosphere of this city, its architecture, its rhythm and its people reflect an incredible harmony. Munich has welcomed me and my friends with open arms. We felt that freedom to be ourselves, which we sometimes miss so much.

This journey was made possible thanks to some incredible people. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the organisers, the community and the translators. Thank you for your work, for every minute you have dedicated to us, and for the stories you have entrusted to us.

These stories are a treasure that changes the way we see the world. My journey as a volunteer is only just beginning. But I already know exactly what I’m taking back with me to Ukraine.

The experiences I’ve gained here in the heart of Bavaria will be my driving force. I want to take this spirit of support and solidarity home with me to inspire others to fight for their rights and their freedom, to love sincerely and openly, and to create new, powerful and progressive art. We are not returning empty-handed, but with new insights.

Let us remember: our strength lies in our unity. If we stand together, we can change the world around us."

Learning from one another, fighting together. That is the motto under which Munich Kyiv Q***r has been inviting q***r people from Ukraine to the ‘Volunteers Workshop’ in Munich for years. The focus: volunteering. The aim: to show what the community can achieve thanks to the commitment of its members! In the “Volunteers Blog”, our guests write about what moves them. Today is Polina's turn:

"Friday marked the end of our workshop week in Munich. We came together as a group one last time to look back on the five days we’d spent here.

For me, this time was an opportunity to build relationships with others. They are an incredible resource. The sense of support and understanding within our Ukrainian group, and beyond that amongst the people in Munich, has only strengthened my desire to work towards the development of q***r activism back home.

A special part of the day was the guided tour of Munich’s most significant q***r venues. Most of them are located on Müllerstraße, which people here refer to as their ‘living room’. For me, this is a symbol of complete acceptance.

However, the history of this neighbourhood also serves as a reminder of just how fragile freedom can be. We learnt about the repression of q***r people that began in Munich in 1933 with the establishment of the Dachau concentration camp. And today? Munich was once a centre of pogroms; now the city ranks among the top 10 most q***r-friendly cities in the world. This proves that change is possible – even after the darkest of times.

I would particularly like to mention Uwe. He accompanied our group throughout the five days, and it is thanks to him that this project exists in this form at all.

His own journey as a volunteer and his openness are incredibly inspiring. Talking to him helped me overcome my inner fear that we might lose our fight in Ukraine. The experiences of people like Uwe show that the road to equality is a long one, but every step is worth it.

The evening concluded with a “Living Library”. I shared my experiences as an activist in Ukraine. It was important to see that people in Munich genuinely care about us."
