🗳️ Our latest issue of Southeast Europe in Focus by Donika Emini is now online: Parliamentary Elections in Kosovo 2025–2026 – Back to Square One after Three Rounds of Voting?

Three elections, millions spent, but the political balance remains virtually unchanged. Kosovo’s repeated trips to the polls have highlighted a key lesson: Elections cannot substitute for political compromise.

Key takeaways from the cycle:

▶High financial & institutional costs: ~€25M spent on elections, with €40M in EU funding lost and another €100M at risk due to delays.

▶Voter fatigue: Turnout dropped sharply, reflecting growing disengagement over strategic political shifts.

▶Campaign focus: Polarisation, personalized conflicts, and AI-driven disinformation increasingly overshadowed core policy issues.

▶The way forward: With the presidency, government, and parliamentary leadership deeply interconnected, a durable resolution requires a comprehensive institutional package, not another round of voting.

📩Die neuen Südosteuropa Mitteilungen sind da!

In dieser Ausgabe untersucht Ivana Ranković die potenziellen Auswirkungen der jüngsten Wahlen in Ungarn und Daniela Apaydin diskutiert in ihrem Beitrag einige Bücher, die zur sogenannten „Ungarn verstehen“-Literatur zählen.

Um das gegenseitige Verständnis von Menschen aus Deutschland und Griechenland geht es in der Analyse von Dr. Ronald Meinardus und um die Selbstwahrnehmung orthodoxer Menschen in Griechenland bei Adamantios Theodor Skordos. Prof. Dr. Christian Voss spricht in einem Interview mit dem Schriftsteller Alem Grabovac über dessen neustes Buch.

📩For our latest issue of Southeast Europe in Focus, Sonja Priebus from the Viadrina University Frankfurt/Oder provides an analysis of the 2026 parliamantary elections in Hungary.

The 2026 Hungarian parliamentary election marked a historic turning point, ending sixteen years of Fidesz-KDNP rule under Viktor Orbán and opening the prospect of democratic renewal.

Despite an electoral system designed to favour incumbents, Péter Magyar’s newly established Tisza party secured a two-thirds parliamentary majority. Within weeks of taking office, the government launched an ambitious programme of institutional reform aimed at restoring the rule of law, media independence, judicial autonomy, and constitutional checks and balances, while prioritizing rebuilding relations with the European Union.

While the 2026 election could initiate a process of re-democratization, Tisza’s constitutional supermajority and reliance on some legislative practices used by the previous regime raise concerns about whether re-democratization will ultimately be achieved.

🗣️ Join us on Wednesday,15 July 2026 for an online discussion on the current state of democracy and media freedom in Serbia!

For 20 months now, student-led protests are being organized across Serbia. Since then, threats, smear campaigns, physical assaults, arrests, and legal proceedings against students, journalists and citizens have dramatically increased in the country. The police are responding with increasing violence to protests, and polarization of the public discourse in the country is surging, fanned through statements by the authorities, which often label the protesters and their supporters as traitors.

In this context, the independent media landscape in Serbia is also increasingly under threat. The independent TV station N1 is currently facing internal restructuring with an abrupt leadership change and limitations in cable and satellite services, which could endanger the very existence of the media outlet. Furthermore, individual journalists, and sometimes even their family members, are increasingly being attacked, illegally filmed and pursued, or even physically assaulted.

🔙 Throwback zur Tagung „Die Welt ist in uns – Jüdisches Leben zwischen Thessaloniki, Sofia und Skopje“ in Leipzig.

Im Rahmen der Tagung moderierte unsere Kollegin Gaëlle Fisher (Foto links) in der vergangenen Woche das Panel „Shoah und jüdische Geschichte nach 1945“. Im Mittelpunkt standen Fragen der Erinnerung, Geschichtsschreibung und des jüdischen Lebens nach 1945.

Die Stadt Leipzig, Gastgeberin der Tagung und Partnerstadt von Thessaloniki, steht 2026 besonders im Zeichen jüdischen Lebens. Anlass ist das sächsische Themenjahr „Tacheles – Jahr der jüdischen Kultur in Sachsen“, das auch für diese internationale wissenschaftlich-kulturelle Begegnung einen wichtigen Rahmen bietet.

💡 Passend dazu findet aktuell die 17. Jüdische Woche in Leipzig statt. Noch bis zum 28. Juni laden mehr als 130 Veranstaltungen dazu ein, jüdische Geschichte, Kultur und Gegenwart kennenzulernen. Gemeinsam gestaltet von über 70 Leipziger Institutionen und Vereinen, setzt die Jüdische Woche ein starkes Zeichen für Begegnung, Austausch und Vielfalt.
