Today, the European Commission published the - the strategy for defending Europe from autocracy.

Will it get the job done? We break it down for you!

📝 The EU executive wants to allocate a portion of the EU’s defence budget on democratic resilience. 💪 Even better: The EU should allocate an equivalent of 10% of the increase in defence spending on democratic resilience, equivalent to the Rearm Europe/Readiness 2030 plan.

📝 The proposal acknowledges the need to streamline democratic resilience spending across the entire long-term EU budget.
🎯 Even better: This has to be done strategically by setting up improved coordination for targeted fund deployment - for example, the Centre for Democratic Resilience can focus on delivering funding where it’s most needed.

📝The Commission argues for evidence-based policymaking and public debate, supported by research and science. It also intends to set up a European Network of Fact-Checkers.
💡 Even better: Fact-checkers have to be connected with intelligence researchers, journalists and strategic communicators in order to succeed in countering information manipulation.

The proposal is just a beginning of a longer journey to democratic resilience, that’s attacked by disinformation, foreign interference, and addictive manipulative algorithms.

✨ Did you know that in 2024 German women received 37 % less in pension than men?
This and so much more was part of the conversation at the “Mothers of Europe – Gründerinnen einer Idee” accompanying event in Cologne. We spoke about how systemic inequalities shape women’s lives – not just in their careers, but well into retirement.
🔸 For example, retired German women generally receive €17,357/year – men get €27,510. That’s a 36.9% pension gap!
🔸 Why? Women still earn less throughout their careers, are more likely to work part-time or take career breaks due to unpaid care work, and remain underrepresented in leadership positions.
🔸As a result, by age 75+, 21.8% of women are at risk of poverty – compared to 15.4% of men.
✨ In Cologne, we opened up these conversations – not just as statistics, but as lived realities. Swipe right to discover more powerful statements that shaped the event!
✨Thank you to everyone who made this night so powerful!
To our speakers – Johanna Schima from .makemothersmatter – thank you for your insights, advocacy, and clear call for change.
To our artists – – thank you for embodying the unsaid and reminding us that history is not only written – it is felt.
And to all participants, and co-creators – you made the room vibrant, open, and full of possibility!

✨ Movement as memory. Voice as echo. Choreography as resilience.

🌀 At the heart of our accompanying event in Cologne, artists and brought the room to a standstill with their deeply moving performance. Their piece honoured memory and quiet resilience echoing the spirit of the founding Mothers of Europe who inspired this exhibition.

🌀 Thank you, Derya and David, for reminding us that art doesn’t just reflect history – it carries it forward.
