While creating the concept for the costumes, the design team had to think about different issues, for example how to create something that anyone could wear and that would last 6 weeks, how the costumes should relate to each other, as well as what type of mood should the costume evoque. Should it shock the viewer? If the costumes look too pretty, will it get the message across? Which type of plastic waste can be used for the project?

We decided to do a concept that would make the hikers seem approachable to strangers. A big part of the hike was about starting a conversation, which literally requires people to come talk to us. 😋 The inspiration was "life & nature" and as you can see here, our professional designer .ay chose to create a coral reef out of plastic bottles and other types of plastic packaging! 🐠

Would you have chosen a different concept?

One of the most interesting part of making the costumes was finding different ways to work with the materials.😋 .c.schmid for example worked a lot with traditional crochet and knitting techniques to create a textile made of plastic bags and gloves! 💜

This costume had a really special feeling to it, you could always discover something new when looking at it up close.🦋

What do you see, when you look at the last picture in the slide?

A lot of thought went into the concept of each of our costumes. Even though each costume was created in a different place by different people, the team was constantly working together.💪

It was also a chance to analyze our materials up close: this costume for example mainly used bottles from a company, Hohes C, that doesn't use deposit systems - which is actually the norm in Germany. 😡

This costume made by was inspired by a tree trunk 🌳! Can you recognize the leaves and mushrooms growing on it?🌱

Before our hikers left off to start their adventure in July, our costume team spent weeks brainstorming ideas and experimenting with plastic waste before each of the team members started building their costume! Many ideas had to be changed or left out, but it was still a lot of fun to try out different things!!

's costume, inspired by marine animals, was mostly done by braiding and knitting plastic bags! My favorite part is the red octopus and it's tentacles spreaded over the backpack! What about yours?

Throwback to our live Meet & Greet in Munich that took place in the beginning of September 🤩

Most of our project work related to Plastic Mountains had to be done online due to the pandemic, so we were really excited that after the hiking section of the project was finished, we could talk about the project in person!

Big thanks to and for making this evening possible ❤

What type of events would you like to see us do next?

On the first of our project we talked to Alexandra Caterbow, co-founder of Health and Environment Justice Support ( ), an organization that provides long term technical, policy and awareness raising support for vulnerable and affected communities from both chemicals contamination and associated environmental degradation. 👏

She talked to us about the connection between hazardous chemicals in everyday household products and their possible negative effects on human health 😳

The research this quote is based on was written by Samsonek J & Puype F, "Occurence of brominated flame retardants in black thermo cups and selected kitchen utensils purchased on the European market"(2013).

There is suggestive evidence that brominated flame retardants (BFRs) could impact human health, but it remains unknown how great the impact of these chemicals can truly be, as researchers are still studying them. Nevertheless, their connection to household products pose a general risk to all consumers.

While we think that this cow looks awfully cute 🐄 and that our costumes made from plastic waste look beautiful 🦋, this does not change the fact that plastic is a foreign object in nature.

Still, you can find plastics everywhere: inside of our bodies, inside of animals' bodies, on the streets, on the beach, in the ocean. 🙈

If we continue to produce and consume plastic products the way we do today, the global plastic crisis will only become worse.

What is the worse place you have discovered plastic in nature? Comment below!

We made it! After 557 kilometers in 40 days with the manpower of more than 30 hikers, we made it to Venice!🥳🥳

On our last day we had a Meet & Greet together with , followed by a film screening of in 💪

This project is made of many small victories that combined make up a big one: the conversations and discussions about plastic we had with strangers during the journey, our three panels - which can still be seen on YouTube! - and the offline events we managed to organize on the way! 🗻🗻

For those who have been following our journey up until now: we are not done yet! 🎥
