The Project Justine

The Project Justine train the trainer“- erworbenes Wissen weitergeben. Unsere Vision von THE JUSTINE PROJECT - train the trainer e.V.

Better late than never 🌍✨

The day before yesterday was African World Heritage Day – and even though we’re a day late, we’d like to take you along to Ghana, right into the heart of what we’re currently working on.

We’ve been spending a lot of time at the loom lately, experimenting intensively: with mohair, silk, wool, virgin wool, merino and all sorts of leftover materials. We’re testing, mixing, discarding, starting afresh. Some materials behave completely differently to what we expected – and that’s exactly where it gets exciting.

It’s not just about reproducing something, but about discovering what’s possible right now. With the resources available locally, with the knowledge that’s there – and with what can emerge from it.

For us, heritage does not mean standing still. It means thinking beyond what already exists. Creating connections between materials, techniques and people. Between what was – and what will become of it.

That is exactly where we start. From tradition to transition.

More insights coming soon – there’s a lot happening right now 🤍

✨NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHT✨

Graduation ceremony in Senegal

After one and a half years of intensive training, dedication and growth, 80 trainees in Senegal officially completed their vocational education guided by our trainers from Benin who carried knowledge, skills and confidence across borders.

One of the most beautiful parts of this journey was witnessing the personal development of each young woman. Many of them started their training shy, quiet and unsure. Step by step they found their voice, their skills and their confidence. And in November they stood in front of us proud, strong and radiant holding their diplomas in their hands.

What made this moment truly special was the way the graduation was created. Fully self organized. Fully owned. Fully celebrated.
Inspired by American graduation traditions, the trainees designed and sewed their own gowns, prepared their own ceremony and turned their final day into something that felt like the closing scene of a movie. Caps were thrown into the air. Laughter, pride and tears filled the room. A real happy end and at the same time a powerful new beginning.

We are deeply proud of our trainers, our graduates and everyone who made this journey possible. And we are excited for the paths that will now unfold from this moment on.

✨OCTOBER HIGHLIGHT✨

From Tradition to Transformation

Last October was more than an exhibition for us. It was a reminder of why we do what we do.
At Nubuke Foundation in Accra we experienced how deeply rooted craft, knowledge and community can grow into something bold and contemporary. Seeing the Winneba Weavers’ handwoven textiles in dialogue with contemporary sustainable design was a powerful moment of connection between heritage and innovation.

One meaningful part of this journey was meeting and collaborating with . Their work in upcycling and circular design opened new perspectives for us and sparked conversations that go far beyond a single exhibition. What started as a collaboration has grown into a sustainable exchange, new ideas and shared visions for what responsible fashion can be.

We are deeply grateful for the inspiring encounters, the trust and the beautiful energy around this project.
And we are excited for what’s ahead – new projects, new collaborations and many more stories yet to be woven with our new partners.
Thank you for being part of this chapter. The journey continues.

✨SEPTEMBER HIGHLIGHT✨

At Munich Fabric Start, the Winneba Weavers were able to present their fabrics to an international professional audience for the very first time. A huge step for our weavers, our trainers and the entire weaving community in Ghana.
We experienced an incredible amount of positive feedback, meaningful conversations and genuine interest in our fair, transparent and future-oriented production.
This opportunity became reality thanks to the support of BMZ and Invest for Jobs. Alongside inspiring textile producers from Egypt, Ethiopia, Senegal ( ) and many more countries.

✨AUGUST HIGHLIGHT✨

Education is more than a profession. It is the key to independence.

Many of our trainees at TPJ come from rural areas around Bersingou and never had the chance to attend school. When we started our tailoring training, we quickly realized: The talent is there. The motivation is there. But one crucial foundation was missing. Basic literacy.

That is why we introduced our literacy classes as a core part of our holistic training concept.

Because only those who can read patterns, work orders and instructions can truly work independently, confidently and professionally in everyday production life.

At TPJ, we do not just train tailors.
We empower people.
For real opportunities.
For true independence.
For a future built with dignity.

✨JULY HIGHLIGHT✨

In Senegal, something very special has grown alongside our journey to our very own production site: a kindergarten. In Senegal, something very special has grown alongside our journey to our very own production site: a kindergarten. Not as an add-on but as an essential part of our holistic approach.

Because we see what women truly need in order to complete their training.
Because motherhood must never be a barrier.
Because child care should always be part of the system.

What started with two children has now become a small nursery. The eighth child joined us in December – like an early Christmas gift. 🎄✨

At the same time, our kindergarten is still missing toys, basic equipment and funds for caregivers.

✨JUNE HIGHLIGHT✨

From Introduction to Adaptation

At the beginning of the project, a loom was introduced to us by a german expert. Together with our weavers in Winneba, the loom was closely examined to understand its structure and functions.

After a short period of working with it, it became clear that the loom in its original form did not allow the weavers to produce certain traditional weaving techniques and patterns that are essential to their practice. At the same time, there was a strong interest in continuing to explore and develop more contemporary, European-inspired patterns and structures.

In response, the weavers began to adapt and modify the loom to better suit their own requirements. Mechanisms were adjusted, functions were rethought, and the system was gradually reworked to support both traditional weaving knowledge and more complex, modern designs. This process did not happen all at once — the loom continued to evolve through ongoing experimentation and practical use.

Together with the students of the University of Education, Winneba, research was carried out to further develop these adaptations. Over time, this led to the creation of a loom that is tailored to the specific needs of the weavers — technically, culturally and creatively.

This development reflects an open, process-oriented approach: starting from an existing system, questioning its suitability and steadily transforming it into a tool that supports local weaving practices and ambitions.

✨MAY HIGHLIGHT✨

From training to real production – our next step.

After months of preparation, we took the leap and turned training into practice. Together with our team and with the support of Asnake Worku Erge from Ethiopia, an expert in garment production, we launched our first real production phase with 800 school uniforms.

What followed was overwhelming: over 100 shirts on the very first day. In record time! Shock, pride and pure excitement were written on every face. One key factor made all the difference: our on-site childcare. The young women were able to work with focus and confidence, knowing their children were safe and cared for.

The result: highly skilled women, ready for the next level of production. Today, we know that training, real support and space to grow create sustainable success.

This is our moment. Our mark. The beginning of a production phase that shows we are ready, for both local and international challenges. We stay committed. We raise awareness. We produce. We empower.
