EU Sport Forum 2026 🇪🇺🏔️
15–16 April | Paphos, Cyprus

EUMA was present at the EU Sport Forum 2026, joining sport stakeholders from across Europe for two days of discussions on where EU sport policy is heading, the challenges ahead, and how we can move forward together.

For EUMA, it’s about keeping mountaineering part of the conversation at EU level — as part of quality of life, wellbeing, and outdoor culture — and continuing to grow our role as a dialogue partner for mountaineering within EU institutions.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Dr. Hrvoje Gold, who tragically passed away on March 18 while hiking in Madeira. 🏔️
Hrvoje was a long-standing member of the EUMA Expert Group for Hiking Trails — always present, always prepared, always generous with his knowledge. He brought a rare combination of academic rigour and genuine passion for the mountains to every discussion. His contributions to the European Trails Conferences in Paris (2024) and Macugnaga (2025) left a lasting impression on everyone in the room.
Within EUMA, he was more than an expert — he was a trusted voice and a warm presence that made our community stronger. That space will not easily be filled.
Our deepest condolences go to his family, his colleagues at the Croatian Mountaineering Association (HPS - Hrvatski planinarski savez) , and all who had the privilege of knowing him. 🤍

Last week, on 30–31 January, the EUMA Board met in Innsbruck for our annual planning meeting. Over two productive days, we reviewed the past year, discussed key priorities, and mapped out our activities for the months ahead. We are excited about the plans taking shape and look forward to another year of collaboration, events, and growth for the EUMA community.

🌿🥾 Next steps towards a future European Green Belt Hiking Trail!

Last week in Aschau, partners from ERA – European Ramblers Association, EUMA – European Mountaineering Association, and EuroNatur / European Green Belt Association met for an inspiring 2-day workshop in the heart of the Kitzbüheler Alps.

Together, we made important progress in finalising the project concept for a unique long-distance hiking trail running from North to South across Europe, following the former corridor of the Iron Curtain.

This future trail would connect nature, history, and culture, allowing people to experience the European Green Belt first-hand — while creating sustainable tourism opportunities for local communities along the way.

There’s still work to be done (and funding to secure), but we’re excited about the journey ahead! 🌍✨

Presenting Our Members: Italian Alpin Club

For our fifth feature, we’re excited to introduce the Italian Alpin Club (CAI) — a founding member of EUMA and one of the largest and most active alpine organizations in Europe.

Why did they join EUMA?
🤝 Since the presidency of Umberto Martini, CAI has been a strong advocate for the creation of EUMA — an entity to unite all mountaineering and mountain associations across Europe, allowing us to speak with one voice to European institutions.
🌍 They recognized that many challenges and opportunities in the mountains transcend national borders, requiring a truly European approach.
⚖️ With the European institutions shaping key regulations that affect the mountain environment, CAI wanted to ensure that the interests of the mountain community are represented at the highest level.

What makes CAI unique?
🔹 Beyond its impressive size and long history, CAI stands out for the diversity of its expertise.
🔹 The organization operates through 17 specialized commissions, covering a wide range of areas — from sports activities (mountaineering, hiking, caving, and more) to scientific, educational, and environmental protection initiatives, as well as technical areas such as medicine, trail maintenance, and innovation in materials and techniques.
🔹 This wealth of knowledge and specialization makes CAI truly unique — a single organization embracing nearly all aspects of life and activities in the mountains.

With EUMA, CAI helps shape European policies on mountain safety, access, and sustainability, sharing over 160 years of experience with the community.

So proud to be part of this incredible project! 🙌

So proud to be part of this incredible project! 🙌

Europe’s mountaineers just took the spirit to new heights — literally! 🏔️💪

As part of the European Week of Sport 2025, climbers from across Europe joined EUMA’s “10 Peaks–10 Flags” challenge, conquering 10 summits and planting flags after climbing over 15,000 metres in total across Europe’s peaks!

A powerful symbol of unity, endurance, and Europe’s love for the outdoors. 🌍✨

From 9–12 October 2025, over 50 participants from 15+ European countries gathered in Macugnaga, Italy, for the 4th European Trails & Paths Conference, co-organised by EUMA, ERA, and CAI.

This year’s theme — Digitalisation for Hiking and Mountain Trails — explored how technology can support sustainability, accessibility, and community engagement across Europe.

💡 Key message:
Digital tools should connect, not replace, human engagement — empowering communities, volunteers, and hikers while preserving nature and culture.

📜 The conference also marked the launch of the Charter for Hiking and Mountaineering Trails, a shared vision for inclusive, sustainable, and accessible trails in Europe.

We’ve reached the conclusion of the 10 Peaks – 10 Flags campaign: United in Altitude for the European Week of Sport ⛰️🏳️

From 23 to 30 September, 10 mountaineering associations each reached the summit of a peak in their country, proudly raising the flag alongside EUMA, their national flag, and the banner of their mountaineering association.

A heartfelt thank you to all the associations for their passion, commitment, and for believing in this project 🤍
