Presenting Our Members: Italian Alpin Club
For our fifth feature, we’re excited to introduce the Italian Alpin Club (CAI) — a founding member of EUMA and one of the largest and most active alpine organizations in Europe.
Why did they join EUMA?
🤝 Since the presidency of Umberto Martini, CAI has been a strong advocate for the creation of EUMA — an entity to unite all mountaineering and mountain associations across Europe, allowing us to speak with one voice to European institutions.
🌍 They recognized that many challenges and opportunities in the mountains transcend national borders, requiring a truly European approach.
⚖️ With the European institutions shaping key regulations that affect the mountain environment, CAI wanted to ensure that the interests of the mountain community are represented at the highest level.
What makes CAI unique?
🔹 Beyond its impressive size and long history, CAI stands out for the diversity of its expertise.
🔹 The organization operates through 17 specialized commissions, covering a wide range of areas — from sports activities (mountaineering, hiking, caving, and more) to scientific, educational, and environmental protection initiatives, as well as technical areas such as medicine, trail maintenance, and innovation in materials and techniques.
🔹 This wealth of knowledge and specialization makes CAI truly unique — a single organization embracing nearly all aspects of life and activities in the mountains.
With EUMA, CAI helps shape European policies on mountain safety, access, and sustainability, sharing over 160 years of experience with the community.
