Latest cyber abuse is an example of how Nuer parents should take their children's safety and dignity seriously.

These days, some of our young Nuer boys are becoming involved in behaviors that our culture has never valued or accepted. In the past, it was considered deeply wrong and shameful to disrespect or expose a daughter, sister, aunt, niece, wife, or girlfriend. Nuer culture has always taught us to protect the dignity, honor, and privacy of community,women and girls. That is among reasons youngmen take arms, spears to defend their villages against external threat.

Traditionally, relationships between a boyfriend and a girlfriend carried meaning, responsibility, and respect. They were not meant to become tools for humiliation or public embarrassment. Yet today, many of our youngmen, include well educated ones, are growing up surrounded by harmful influences that have challenged and weakened Nuer cultural values for decades. Instead of embracing the opportunities available to them for education, leadership, and personal growth, some are being drawn into behaviors that undermine the very principles our elders worked hard to preserve.

What makes this situation even more painful is that these behaviors are emerging in communities blessed with opportunities for moral guidance. We have hundreds of churches filled with parents, children, pastors, preachers, prophets, and gospel singers. We have schools and educational institutions. If our children are using social media to expose, shame, and disrespect their sisters and daughters, then we must ask ourselves difficult questions. What lessons are they learning? What values are being passed on? How can our churches, schools, artists, commujity associations and families work together to better guide our young people?
