A warm welcome to Misheck Masamba!

Following in the footsteps of nearly 200 medical students from Germany who have completed clinical rotations in Malawi over the past ten years, we are delighted that the Stefan Reuber Scholarship is now making it possible for a medical student from Malawi to complete a clinical rotation in Germany.

Over the next four weeks, he will gain experience in the interdisciplinary emergency department and the anesthesia department at Marburg University Hospital.

Herzlich willkommen, Misheck Masamba!

Today our four students had the honor of handing over a donation from Germany to Dr. Naphazi, which was received with great enthusiasm.
The donation included medical scrubs in various colors and sizes. Our students personally transported the scrubs to Malawi, where they were officially handed over today.
Many thanks again to .official for their invaluable support in making this donation possible!

Moni! Muli bwanji? 🇲🇼 (Hello, how are you in Chichewa)

We are Paulina, Olivia, Melissa and Anna – four German medical students who will be doing our clinical internship here in Malawi this March. Joining us is Sophia, a German pediatrician who will be working here for the next six weeks.

We are very excited to be here and grateful for the opportunity to learn and experience medicine in a new environment. We can’t wait to see what this time will teach us – both professionally and personally.

Zikomo kwambiri for the warm welcome so far! We are looking forward to everything we will experience and will update you here.

Feedback from our students of January and February 20206

We collected a lot of experiences and new knowledge during our medical internship at the Phalombe District Hospital in January (Fabia) and February (Jasmin). Our time in Malawi was beyond rewarding and we were able to gain personal and professional growth that we didn’t expect. We were treated as learning hospital staff and integrated quickly as medical students and friends.

A special thanks goes to Dr. Naphazi and Dr. Grace for facilitating our stay. We hope to see everyone again soon!

The donated monitors in action!
At last, continuous monitoring in the pediatric intensive care unit is possible — something that is especially important for severe respiratory infections, severe malaria, tetanus, and other common conditions. We were able to successfully wean this little patient with pneumonia off oxygen therapy, and he was able to leave the hospital a few days later.

The frequent power outages in Malawi pose a major challenge to providing medical care. This is especially severe in the nursery (neonatal unit) of the Phalombe District Hospital, as many premature and newborn infants rely on respiratory support (CPAP) and oxygen therapy provided through oxygen concentrators. This means that during a power outage neither respiratory support nor oxygen therapy can be ensured. Unfortunately, this has a tremendous impact on neonatal mortality...
Particularly in the rainy season - which has just begun - storms and heavy rain often cause power poles to collapse, leaving the whole district without electricity, and repairs can take many hours or even several days.
At present, only the operating theatre has a fuel-powered generator, but the ongoing fuel shortages pose challenges as well.
We are therefore working on equipping the nursery with a solar panel system, and we are convinced that this more than urgently needed!

Last week we transferred a premature infant (birth weight 1200g) with suspected Hirschsprung’s disease (bowel obstruction due to lacking nerve cells in the distal colon) and icterus gravis (severe hyperbilirubinemia) requiring an exchange transfusion to Zomba Central Hospital. Due to limited resources — especially a severe petrol shortage — several patients had to be transported in the ambulance at the same time. Our little patient therefore traveled in the front row and arrived in Zomba well🙂

Two additional patient monitors

Berenike Thoma has now been at Rev. John Chilembwe Hospital for several days. As a paediatrician in Germany, she will spend most of her time on the children’s ward, delivering short training courses and exploring potential future projects.
Thanks to a fundraising appeal by our former medical students .prbst and Svenja Kadler, the hospital has received two additional patient monitors for the paediatric ward.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all donors for their generous contributions.

On September 1st. we (Mara Probst and Svenja Kadler) traveled to the District Hospital Phalombe to complete our practical training here. We have great respect for what is done here and are grateful for all the insights and experiences. We truly enjoyed our time here, and working with the team has been a great experience.
