„El manisero“ is a Son from Cuba composed by Moisés Simon and was shared in Ethno Studio 2024 by Yerlan Ricardo.
He says:
"The original title of the song is “El Manisero.” It’s based on the call of the peanut vendors
(“Maniiiiiiii!”), folks you can still see – and hear – in Hanava’s Parque Central.
After its recording and distribution in New York in May 1930, ""El Manisero"" (The Peanut Vendor) by Moisés Simons, was seen as the first boom in Latino music which opened the doors of the music industry to the entire region.
It is the most famous piece of music created by a Cuban musician.
It is a son-pregón (street vendor’s cry) describing a peanut vendor who slowly plies his wares along a street, which reaches a climax and then, little by little, begins to fade into the distance.
“Peanuts, peanuts, peanuts!”“If you want to please your mouth, buy a cone of peanuts!...'"

Lyrics:
"Maní...Maní…
Si te quieres por el pico divertir,
Cómete un cucurruchito de maní
Qué calentico y rico está.
Ya no se puede pedir más
Ay, caserita, no me dejes ir
Porque después te vas a arrepentir
Y va a ser muy tarde ya
Manisero se va...Manisero se va...
Caserita, no te acuestes a dormir
Me voy...Me voy..."

Translation:
"Peanuts...Peanuts...
If you want to have fun, Eat a little peanut cone
How warm and delicious it is. You can't ask for more
Oh, little lady, don't let me go
Because later you'll regret it
And it's going to be too late
Peanut seller is leaving...Peanut seller is leaving...
Little lady, don't go to bed
Without eating a little peanut cone
When the street is empty
Little lady of my heart
The peanut seller sings his cry
And if the girl hears his song
He calls from his balcony
Give me your peanuts...Give me your peanuts...
Because tonight I won't be able to sleep
Without eating a little peanut cone
I'm leaving...I'm leaving…"

„Azeitona por ser preta“ is a traditional Canção da Beira Baixa from Portugal and was shared in Ethno Studio 2024 by João Vicente and Eugénia Tarovatova. They say:
"This song was collected in 1940 from a region in Portugal known as Beira Baixa. It is a work song that was traditionally sung during agricultural tasks. Today, it is performed by those interested in traditional songs and is appreciated in various settings.
The song has a metaphorical double meaning that promotes a positive message of life and self appreciation. It uses the imagery of the olive harvest and grape picking to express themes of resilience, beauty and pride of the life of a farmer."

Lyrics:
"A azeitona por ser preta
A azeitona por ser preta
Ai, vai-se a moer ao lagar;
Também eu por ser trigueira
Ai, na terra me hei-de eu casar.

A oliveira pequenina
Ai, que azeitona pode dar?
Um baguinho, até dois
Ai, até muito carregar.

Nós andamos na vindima,
Ai, que lindos cachos que saem!
Havemos de pendurá-los,
Ai, todo o tempo sabem bem.“

Translation:
"The olive, because it is black,
Oh, it goes to the mill to be ground;
And I, because I am dark-skinned,
Oh, in this land I shall wed.

The little olive tree,
Oh, what olives can it bear?
A small one, maybe two,
Oh, it can carry many more.

We are out in the grape harvest,
Oh, what beautiful bunches comes out!
We shall hang them up,
Oh, they taste good all the time."

It's the German Unity Day 😊

This „Polonaise“ is a traditional dance found in the North-West German Dalhoff Collection (1767-1799), in the 5th book of the collection on page 52, in Dinker, Westfalen and was shared in Ethno Studio 2024 by Fabia Bartuschka. She says:
„This tune is played in the current german folk scene and is part of a growing repertoire of tunes found in old handwritten sources. Since there is there is no direct oral tradition in many parts of germany, tunes are rediscovered and now taught by ear at workshops, festivals and sessions. The dance to this tune is a Polonaise, a group dance in pairs, walking and forming different shapes in the room. Nowadays it's often danced as a "Wickler", a couple dance, holding hands and walking while improvising turns and other figures.“

„Gore dolom / Горе долом“ is a traditional song coming from the Lemko culture, an ethnic group inhabiting the region of Carpathian mountains spanning Ukraine, Slovakia, and Poland and was shared in Ethno Studio 2024 by Andriana Takić.
She says:
"It is a song of loss, sorrow, and yearning, grounded in nature - where mountains and valleys stand as witnesses, echoing the character's deep emotions.

Although not directly from my cultural background, the song’s language and music profoundly resonate with my Slavic origins. In this arrangement, we've added the Balkan flavour by using the odd 7/8 rhythm, merging the sounds and stories from different parts of the Slavic world. Including this rhythm and connecting multiple musical influences also reflects my own background, which is not tied to one culture alone. Doing this arrangement with the Ethno community also shows how music from different traditions can speak to each other across mountains, valleys, and borders."

Lyrics:
"Горе долом ходжу,
Не виджу нікого.
Серце моє плаче
Од жалю велького.

Шугаю, шугаю,
Ци ти тепер в раю?
Ци юж ся не вернеш
До рідного краю?

Плачте гори, плачте,
Плачте і ялиці,
Бо юж ся не верне
Шугай до Криниці.

Гори наші горим,
Гори і убочи,
Не мож вас забити,
Ни во дне, ни в ночі.“

Translation:
"I walk by hills and valleys,
I don't see anyone.
My heart is crying
From a great sorrow.

Young lad, young lad,
Are you now in heaven?
Will you never come back
To our homeland?

Cry, mountains, cry,
And you pines, cry too,
For the young lad will not
Come back to Krynica*.

Mountains, our mountains,
Mountains and your fields,
One can never forget you,
Neither during the day nor during the night.

*a town in Poland"

„Adónde Vas Jilguerillo“ is a traditional Chilean Tonada Campesina and was shared in Ethno Studio 2024 by Felipe del Fuego. He says: In the old days, this type of song was sung in the Chilean countryside, at home for the family or at different festivities. Nowadays, it is performed by young folklore lovers and Chilean folk music groups.

YouTube: https://youtu.be/1izmuUrfLQ8

Lyrics:
"¿Adónde vai, jilguerillo,
con ese abreviado vuelo?
Andá y llévale un suspiro
a la imagen de mi sueño.

Volando de rama en rama
hai de llegar a su puerta,
y no te vengái de allá
hasta traerme respuesta.

L’otro día en una rama
vi cantar un jilguerillo.
Me dije: «este es el correo
con quien mandé mi suspiro».

Me acerco y le pregunté
por qué cantaba tan triste:
«Porque no tuve respuesta
del suspiro que me diste»."

Translation:
"Where are you going, goldfinch,
with that abbreviated flight?
Go and carry a sigh
to the image of my dream.

Flying from branch to branch
you will reach his door,
and do not come back from there
until you bring me an answer.

The other day on a branch
I saw a goldfinch singing.
I said to myself: ""This is the mail
with which I sent my sigh.""

I approached and asked him
why he sings so sadly:
""Because I had no answer
to the sigh you gave me."""
