Zwedru comes together to celebrate World Chimpanzee Day 2026!
With funding from the from the “ – Protecting biodiversity through law enforcement and community-led initiatives”, brought together communities, partners, students, and conservationists in Zwedru to celebrate chimpanzee conservation and raise awareness about the importance of protecting Liberia's forests and wildlife.
The celebrations held on 18th of July 2026 began with a parade through the city, where the ( ), Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF), partners, students, and community members marched together to raise awareness about the importance of protecting chimpanzees and Liberia's rich biodiversity.
During the official programme, Mr. Wiah Bohlen, Principal of Zwedru Multilateral High School, encouraged young people to become ambassadors for wildlife conservation, highlighting the vital role of environmental education.
Dr. Annika Hillers, WCF Country Director, thanked the community for its continued commitment to conservation, reminding everyone that "protecting chimpanzees means protecting our forests, our life, and our future."
Representing the Grand Gedeh County Attorney, Zwedru City Solicitor Jerome Tarpeh reaffirmed the government's commitment to enforcing wildlife protection laws and tackling illegal hunting and habitat destruction.
The day concluded with a friendly football match between the FDA-WCF joint team and Grand Gedeh University. Finishing in a 1–1 draw, the match celebrated the teamwork and partnership that are essential for successful conservation.
