Who do we listen to?

With a panel discussion on this question, our partner Kolegium Europy Wschodniej turned its attention on plural memories in challenging times and successfully brought this year’s conference to a close.

After a warm welcome by Vicki Felthaus of the stadtleipzig, chief editor of new.org.pl Jarosław Kociszewski talked with the guests Iris Edenheiser, designated Director Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig, and Małgorzata Kopka-Piątek, a political scientist and member of the board of the Institute for Public Affairs in Warsaw.

The performance by pianist Dmytro and songwriter and guitarist Tymofii of the band Bezlich BEZLICH gave us a glimpse into young Ukrainian culture that evening.
Joining them was Ukrainian poet and cultural organizer Zlata Zhuravlova | Poetry, Culture & Ukraine. Last year, she published her first bilingual poetry collection, „Vorspiel“, in Ukrainian and German. At , she performed her poem “My Monologue to You” together with her sister. Thank you for this wonderful closing event!

As part of the Cultural Year Yerevan–Leipzig, Armenia was one of the thematic focuses of this year’s International Round Table Conference, Democratic Memories . Democratic Futures.

How are personal and collective memories intertwined with democratic futures? And how do changing politics of remembrance shape societies and their understanding of democracy?

In his keynote, “Shifting Memory Politics and Democracy: Remembering in Armenia,” Dr. Tigran Amiryan explored the complex relationship between personal memories, collective narratives and memory politics in Armenia.

We were pleased to partner with the Cultural and Social Narratives Laboratory Cultural & Social Narratives Lab bringing important perspectives from Armenian civil society into the conversations at Revolutionale 2026.

Gabriele Goldfuß, Head of the City of Leipzig’s International Cooperation Unit, opened the session with a greeting highlighting the connection between Leipzig and Yerevan and the importance of international cultural exchange. That was our International Round Table Conference 2026, organized by Stiftung Friedliche Revolution.

With these first impressions from photographer Sandrino Donnhauser of the opening event of our conference on Thursday, we would like to express our gratitude for the inspiring and valuable contributions and for the participation of so many dedicated human rights defenders from so many different countries and backgrounds. Die Stille dröhnt. Performance im Anschluss an die Podiumsdiskussion „Umweltaktivismus als demokratische Praxis“ | 8. Oktober 2026

40 Jahre nach Tschernobyl richtet die Performance den Blick zurück und zugleich auf die Gegenwart: Was bleibt, wenn eine Katastrophe aus den Schlagzeilen verschwindet oder es gar nicht erst dorthin schafft?

Zwischen Tanz, Violine und Stimme entsteht ein Raum, in dem Stille beruhigen, bedrängen und verunsichern kann.

Die Stille dröhnt lädt dazu ein, über die Verbindung von Demokratie, Umweltbewusstsein und Verantwortung nachzudenken.

Forty years after Chernobyl, the performance looks back while turning its gaze to the present: What remains when a catastrophe disappears from the headlines – or never makes it there in the first place?

Through dance, violin and voice, a space emerges where silence can be soothing, oppressive and unsettling.

Für den Abschluss des IRT26 richten wir gemeinsam mit dem Kolegium Europy Wschodniej Kolegium Europy Wschodniej den Blick auf die Erinnerungen der Vielen.
Welche Geschichten werden gehört, welche bleiben unsichtbar? Und welche Bedeutung hat eine plurale Erinnerungskultur in Zeiten von Krieg und wachsendem Autoritarismus?
Gemeinsam mit Małgorzata Kopka-Piątek und Iris Edenheiser sowie Teilnehmenden der Konferenz bringen wir zentrale Perspektiven, Erfahrungen und Fragen der vergangenen Tage zusammen.
In Kooperation mit dem KEW und dem Polnischen Institut Berlin – Filiale Leipzig. Polnisches Institut Berlin

Als musikalischen Abschluss bringen Dmytro und Tymofii von der Berliner Band Bezlich ein Stück junger ukrainischer Kultur auf die Bühne. Ihre eigene Musik verbindet sie mit der Bezlich Community, einem jungen ukrainischen Netzwerk in Berlin, das durch Musik und Kultur Gemeinschaft und gegenseitige Unterstützung schafft.
Gemeinsam mit der ukrainischen Lyrikerin Zlata Zhuravlova Zlata Zhuravlova | Poetry, Culture & Ukraine präsentieren sie ihr Gedicht „Mein Monolog an euch“.

To conclude the conference, the Kolegium Europy Wschodniej (KEW) turns it’s attention to the memories of many. Together with the participants, the closing discussion will bring together key perspectives, experiences and questions from the past few days: whose voices shape our understanding of the past – and who do we listen to in times of war, hostile use of information and growing authoritarianism?

In cooperation with KEW and the Polish Institute Berlin – Leipzig Branch.

As a musical finale, Dmytro and Tymofii of the Berlin-based band Bezlich will bring a piece of contemporary young Ukrainian culture to the stage.

Together with Ukrainian poet and cultural organiser Zlata Zhuravlova, they will perform her poem “My Monologue to You”. //

We’re delighted to introduce one of our participants at IRT26:
Francelia Ruiz López, a human rights defender, feminist activist, and researcher from Venezuela.

For the past 10 years, she has worked in an adverse context marked by a closed civic space and the constant criminalization of civil society. Her work has focused on documenting Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ESCR) violations and leading humanitarian response projects amidst Venezuela’s Complex Humanitarian Emergency.

As a feminist activist, Francelia fight for women’s human rights, with a strong emphasis on political participation. Because of her commitment to documentation and public denunciation, she faced a year and a half of forced exile due to the persecution of civil society organizations and human rights defenders in Venezuela.

We’re looking forward to welcoming Francelia to IRT26.
