Die DGS ist die deutsche Repräsentation der Wissenschaft von den Zeichenprozessen in Natur und Kultur. Die DGS e.V. ist die deutsche Gesellschaft für Semiotik.

Ihr Ziel ist es, semiotische Forschung und Lehre sowie Publikationen zur Semiotik in Deutschland zu unterstützen und die internationale Zusammenarbeit im Bereich der Semiotik zu fördern. Besonders wichtig ist uns dabei die Nachwuchsförderung, was wir unter anderem durch unseren Semiotik-Förderpreis für herausragende Dissertationen, der alle drei Jahre vergeben wird, zeigen. iologie) ist die Wissenschaft von den Zeichenprozessen in Kultur und Natur. Zeichen, wie zum Beispiel Bilder, Wörter, Gesten und Gerüche, vermitteln Informationen aller Art in Zeit und Raum. In Zeichenprozessen (Semiosen) werden Zeichen konstituiert, produziert, in Umlauf gebracht und rezipiert. Ohne Semiose wären Kognition, Kommunikation und kulturelle Bedeutungen nicht möglich. Wirft man einen Blick in die Kulturgeschichte, so stellt man schnell fest, dass die Reflexion über Zeichen und Zeichenprozesse so alt ist wie die abendländische Philosophie, und auch in anderen Traditionen wurde schon früh über die symbolische Verfasstheit von Kultur nachgedacht. Die semiotischen Fragestellungen sind also älter als alle wissenschaftlichen Einzeldisziplinen und daher geeignet, deren Isolierung zu überwinden, Gemeinsamkeiten zu suchen und Unterschiede vergleichend herauszuarbeiten. Semiotikerinnen und Semiotiker fragen allgemein danach, was alles Zeichen sein kann, nach den Ordnungen und Strukturen von Zeichensystemen, den verschiedenen Funktionen und Gebrauchsweisen von Zeichen, nach ihrer Materialität, Medialität, Performativität und Ästhetik sowie nach den Beziehungen zwischen verschiedenen Zeichensystemen und Medien. Dabei beschäftigt sich die Semiotik aber keineswegs nur mit menschlicher Kommunikation und Kultur, sondern etwa auch mit Wahrnehmungs-, Orientierungs- und Interaktionsverhalten bei Tieren und Pflanzen sowie mit Signalprozessen im Inneren von Organismen und Informationsverarbeitung in Maschinen. Als Grundlagen- und Metawissenschaft geht die Semiotik der Frage nach der Zeichenhaftigkeit kultureller und natürlicher Phänomene nach. Dadurch bietet sie unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und Praxisfeldern ein interdisziplinäres Forum an und stellt auch theoretische Grundlagen für die Analyse interkultureller Verständigung bereit.

Call for Semiotics Scholars! We live in troubled times. The refugee crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the crisis of liberal democracies deeply affect individuals, societies, and the environment. Societas Ethica’s 62nd Annual Conference 2026, “Crisis & Recovery: Ethics in Interdisciplinary Dialogue” (August 20–23, 2026, University of Tartu, Estonia) warmly welcomes semioticians to join the discussion and explore how signs, meanings, and cultural communication shape ethical responses and recovery in such crises. One of the keynote speakers is Susan Petrilli. The conference languages will be English, German, and French.

📣New Book Release | Semiotics: Principles & Problems by Yiheng Zhao

We are pleased to announce the publication of Semiotics: Principles & Problems, the latest English monograph by Professor Yiheng Zhao of Sichuan University.

In this book, Zhao redefines the core concepts of “sign” and “semiotics,” building a new foundation based on “meaning-making.” He proposes that a sign is not simply “one thing standing for another,” but a perception recognized as carrying meaning. Through this new perspective, semiotics becomes a true science of meaning.

Drawing on this theoretical innovation, the book explores a wide range of issues, including cultural markedness, the sliding of motivation in art, the fine line between falsehood and untruthfulness, and the double forces driving modernization in China.

Professor Yiheng Zhao is a scholar in Semiotics and Narratology, author of nearly 30 books, and Director of the Institute of Semiotics and Media Studies (ISMS) at Sichuan University.
