STEP Prof. Michael Frese and Dr. Michael Gielnik founded STEP in 2008. The first implementations took place in Uganda in 2009. Your STEP team

The STEP training (Student Training for Entrepreneurial Promotion) is an action-oriented entrepreneurship training, which is funded by the DAAD and the German Commission for UNESCO. The training content itself was developed in cooperation with lecturers of the Makerere University Business School, Uganda Christian University, Kyambogo University and Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Since then STEP

has been successfully implemented at different institutions in several African countries, in Mexico and on the Philippines

The STEP training is based on the action-regulation theory (Frese, 2009; Frese & Zapf, 1994; Hacker, 1998) and views action as the most important factor for successful entrepreneurship. During the training lecturers of the different institutions deliver the training to their students. They learn how to deliver the STEP training and its action-oriented training approach with the help of a train-the-trainers workshop conducted by the German STEP team. Teaching lecturers of the institutions in how to conduct the STEP training leads to a more sustainable implementation in the long run. Every implementation of the STEP training is evaluated according to highest scientific standards. These evaluations allow us to gain insights into the effects of the training on the students’ and teachers’ change in knowledge and skills, the impact of the training on students’ and teachers’ behavior and the long-term success of the training. The dream of owning a business and becoming financially independent can be traced back to Great Anekeajagu’s primary school days. In 2023, this dream became a reality when she founded her business during the STEP training at the Godfrey Okoye University. Today, Great is a proud entrepreneur and student, earning enough to support herself financially throughout her studies.
“STEP was that miracle that fueled, fertilized, and pushed me out of my shyness and comfort zone. It enabled me to bear fruits.”
During the training, she launched “Greatbite Confectioneries” with her team - buying, rebranding, and selling drinks and snacks. The business has continued to grow, now employing a team of five and constantly expanding with new products.
Through the profits she earns, Great has achieved financial independence from her parents and has been able to build her personal library by purchasing books to support her academic journey.
Great’s story shows STEP’s impact in equipping students to build sustainable businesses while and after pursuing their education.

STEP at Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu, Nigeria

About 170 students take part in the STEP program which will run until mid-December. Last week, the participants received a financial starting boost to kick-start their businesses. As part of the project “Sustainable Entrepreneurship Courses for Under- and Postgraduate Students”, the training is funded by the DAAD.

In September, the Train-the-Trainer workshop was held at the GOU to equip 11 lecturers with the necessary skills to properly train students. The TTT featured participation from lecturers of Leuphana University, University of Venda (South Africa), Mount Kenya University (Kenya), the National Universities Commission (Abuja), Godfrey Okoye University Enugu, and the Institute of Ecumenical Education, Thinkers Corner Enugu.

We look forward to conducting this training and seeing the students' ideas and businesses thrive!

Often only what grows fruits is shown. But sometimes a lot of work stays behind the scenes. Last year the Training in Niger should have already started. First, we conducted a mini pilot project in March. It was successful. Second, we conducted a pilot project based on the feedback from the mini pilot in May. It was successful. Third we wanted to start the 3 months training in June… but the military coup in Niger forced us to stop.

The training is planned as a Personal Initiative training with elements of STEP as some women do not have businesses yet. It is a cooperation with the World Bank and CESAM, our local implementation partner. The training will be targeted at 1,000 young women between the ages of 15 to 24. The women previously participated in the Safe Spaces training, an empowerment program that covers topics such as self-esteem, prevention of gender-based violence, health management, and finances. By participating in the PI training, the women will be encouraged to take another step towards independence and equality.

The training materials are designed in a way that also enables illiterates to actively participate. A notable difference is that we developed the case study of Mariam, who starts and manages her own sustainable micro-business over the course of the training sessions. The case study is accompanied by a large number of illustrations and was very well received by the participants of the mini-pilot.

We hope to start soon!
