Masterclass in Concert – with Dénes Várjon - Recap 🎹

Dénes Várjon, born in Budapest in 1968, is regarded as a versatile musician: he is an outstanding soloist, a top-class chamber musician, artistic leader of festivals and a sought-after piano teacher. Critically acclaimed recordings and numerous awards bear witness to his sensational technique and deep musicality. The Kronberg Academy is therefore very grateful that Dénes Várjon has been working with them as a lecturer since 2018. This year, too, a masterclass took place under his direction as part of the Chamber Music Festival, featuring works by Brahms and Schubert performed in an intimate concert setting in the Great Hall.

“Roots”🌿

Hans Christian Aavik’s Wednesday Concert “Roots” traces the musical traditions and influences that have shaped him as an artist. Traditional melodies from Denmark, Germany and Australia are interwoven with 20th- and 21st‑century works, creating a programme that moves between folk character, rhythmic drive and contemporary sound.

Alongside pieces such as “Sonderho Bridal Trilogy Pt. III”, “Waltzing Matilda” and Artur Kapp’s “Estonian Dance”, the evening features Bartók’s Rhapsody No. 1 for violin and piano, works by Fredrik Sjölin and Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, and Jaan Rääts’ Concerto for Chamber Orchestra op. 16 in a version for piano quintet.

On stage are violinist Hans Christian Aavik, Ruslan Talas (Violin), Brian Isaacs (Viola), Petar Pejčić (Violoncello) and pianist Karolina Aavik.

Folk Serenades – music among friends

Noga Shaham will be performing at next Wednesday’s concert. And as the title suggests – truly amongst friends. Together with fellows and alumni of the Kronberg Academy Michael Shaham, Dmytro Udovychenko and Alexander Warenberg, they will be performing “Folk Serenades”. Noga Shaham skillfully stringed together a program for the viola: From an old Italian serenade by Hugo Wolf, through works by Zoltán Kodály and Ernst von Dohnányi, to a serenade by the young violinist and composer Georgii Moroz, which is going to have its world premiere at this upcoming “Mittwochskonzert”.

There are still tickets available – and don’t forget, entry to our Wednesday concerts is free for young people and students up to the age of 27.

--
Beethoven hasn’t finished speaking.

Great music is never complete; it remains alive through those who encounter it anew. Beethoven created the language – Kirill Gerstein speaks it for our time. Across all six piano concertos – including the rarely performed Concerto No. 0 – Gerstein and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe present Beethoven not as a historical artefact, but as a living, ever changing voice: restless, searching, open. These works appear not as monuments to be preserved, but as ideas to be argued and shaped – full of humour, resilience and lyricism.
