The core research partners are the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), the Migration Policy Centre (MPC) at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence and the European Policy Centre (EPC), a think tank in Brussels. The Mercator Dialogue on Asylum and Migration (MEDAM) is funded by Stiftung Mercator.

Whether caused by worldwide changes in population, political persecution or continuing conflicts, migration will remain a dominant issue in Europe for a long time. How it is addressed will impact Europe’s future cohesion and capacity to act. MEDAM will help to de-emotionalize an often heated debate and provide a scientifically sound basis for decision making. The three-year research and consultation project aims to identify and close the gaps in existing research and to develop research-based solutions for asylum and immigration policies, addressing the most pressing concerns of policy makers from an independent European perspective. Our research focusses on economic issues in three broad areas:
• EU asylum and migration policies;
• the economic and social integration of immigrants and their contribution to EU prosperity;
• the impact of migration on countries of origin and countries of first asylum.
