🌿 From Source to Sea 🌊 (DEUTSCH UNTEN)
We are pursuing a clear vision: to restore the Segama River in Borneo from its source all the way to the sea. Along the river, we are bringing forests back, gradually transforming former plantations into rainforest, and reconnecting fragmented habitats.
From the forests of the Heart of Borneo through the Tabin Wildlife Reserve and all the way to the coast, a connected network of protected areas and reserves is taking shape. A green corridor that functions as a whole again—linking wildlife, forests, and water from source to sea.

🌿 Von der Quelle bis zum Meer 🌊
Wir verfolgen eine klare Vision: den Segama-Fluss in Borneo von der Quelle bis zur Mündung ins Meer zu renaturalisieren. Entlang des Flusses lassen wir Wälder zurückkehren, wandeln ehemalige Plantagen Schritt für Schritt wieder in Regenwald um und verbinden fragmentierte Lebensräume.
Von den Wäldern des Heart of Borneo über das Tabin Wildlife Reserve bis hinaus zur Küste entsteht so ein zusammenhängendes Netzwerk aus Schutzgebieten und Reserven. Ein grüner Korridor, der wieder als Ganzes funktioniert – und Tiere, Wälder und Wasser vom Ursprung bis ins Meer verbindet.

💪🏽 Big win for Sabah, Borneo 🌿

The government of Sabah has definitively rejected plans for a new highway through our project area in Tabin. A huge victory for the rainforest – and for every species that calls it home.
📍The planned road would have run straight through one of Borneo's most important wildlife corridors – from Sukau on the Kinabatangan River across Tabin to Tambisan on the east coast, as part of the Pan-Borneo Highway project. It would most likely have driven entire species to extinction. 🐈🐸🦤

We fought against this project for years, together with numerous other organisations. This corridor connects 200,000 hectares of key habitat for the survival of Borneo's threatened flora and fauna – and it will now remain intact.

Die Regierung von Sabah hat Pläne für eine neue Autobahn durch unser Projektgebiet in Tabin endgültig abgelehnt. Ein riesiger Sieg für den Regenwald – und für alle Arten, die dort leben.

📍 Geplant war ein Highway von Sukau am Kinabatangan über Tabin bis nach Tambisan an der Ostküste – als Teil des Pan-Borneo-Highway-Projekts. Die Strecke hätte mitten durch einen der wichtigsten Wildtierkorridore Borneos geführt und wohl zum Aussterben ganzer Arten geführt. 🐈🐸🦤

Wir haben jahrelang gemeinsam mit anderen Organisationen für dieses Ergebnis gekämpft. Dieser Korridor vernetzt 200.000 ha Schlüsselgebiete für das Überleben der bedrohten Flora und Fauna Borneos – und bleibt jetzt intakt.

Meet the wildlife of Sabah: 🌿
The Western Tarsier (Cephalopachus bancanus) - DEUTSCH 👇🏽

Specs:
Size: Fits in your palm (approx. 12-15 cm).
Range: The lowland jungles of Borneo, Sumatra, and nearby islands.
Behavior: A nocturnal high-jump specialist. It can leap 5 meters to sn**ch birds or bats mid-air.
Superpowers: Ears that rotate like satellite dishes and a neck that turns 180° in either direction for a 360° view.

The Threat: Currently listed as Vulnerable (IUCN). The primary culprit? Habitat loss due to palm oil plantations and illegal pet trade. They are highly sensitive; in captivity, they often become so stressed they commit su***de by hitting their heads against cages.

Help us to restore their habitat - the rainforests of Sabah.

Verhalten: Nachtaktiver Hochsprung-Spezialist. Er kann bis zu 5 Meter weit springen, um Vögel oder Fledermäuse mitten in der Luft zu fangen.
Superkräfte: Ohren, die sich wie Satellitenschüsseln drehen, und ein Hals, der sich in beide Richtungen um 180° bewegen kann – für einen Rundumblick von 360°.

Die Bedrohung: Aktuell als gefährdet (IUCN) eingestuft. Hauptursachen sind Lebensraumverlust durch Palmölplantagen und der illegale Tierhandel. Koboldmakis sind extrem stressanfällig; in Gefangenschaft verletzen sie sich oft selbst tödlich, indem sie mit dem Kopf gegen Gitter schlagen.

From a "Forest of No Return" to a place of hope. 🦧🌳 (DEUTSCH UNTEN)

For a long time, Bukit Piton in Borneo was seen as a lost cause. After being hit by unsustainable logging and devastating fires, it was dubbed the "Forest of No Return" - an ecosystem so degraded it seemed impossible to save.
Today, it has become a vital asylum for orangutans. But there’s a catch: surrounded by plantations and the Segama River, these animals are physically isolated. They cannot leave - which makes the health of this forest their only lifeline.

We are changing that. 🛠️✨
The Rhino and Forest Fund (RFF) is now upgrading this habitat: we are freeing trees from suffocating vines and planting thousands of fruit trees to increase the food supply.

Lange Zeit galt Bukit Piton auf Borneo als aussichtsloser Fall. Nach nicht nachhaltigem Holzeinschlag und verheerenden Bränden wurde das Gebiet als „Wald ohne Wiederkehr“ bezeichnet – ein Ökosystem, das so stark degradiert war, dass eine Rettung unmöglich schien. Heute ist es zu einem überlebenswichtigen Asyl für Orang-Utans geworden. Doch die Sache hat einen Haken: Umgeben von Plantagen und dem Segama-Fluss sind diese Tiere physisch isoliert. Sie können nicht weg – was den Zustand dieses Waldes zu ihrer einzigen Lebensader macht.

Wir ändern das. 🛠️✨ Der RFF wertet diesen Lebensraum nun auf: Wir befreien Bäume von erstickenden Schlingpflanzen und pflanzen viele Fruchtbäumen, um das Nahrungsangebot zu erhöhen.

The “Keruing Kasugoy” is a keystone tree of the rainforests in Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo, reaching heights of up to 60 meters.
🪵 Decades of logging for valuable Keruing timber have severely reduced its populations.
🌱 Today, new hope is growing:
On former oil palm plantations 🌴, we are replanting native, endangered tree species like this one.
Only this way can functional rainforests return—forests where orangutans, elephants, gibbons, and clouded leopards can live again. 🦧🐘🐆

A NEW RAINFOREST? 🌱🪴🌳 (DEUTSCH 👇🏽)
Simply putting saplings in the ground won’t make a new rainforest.

Here’s why Planting Trees Alone Is Not Enough
🌥️ Children of the shade: Young rainforest trees need protection. On cleared land, it is simply too hot and too bright for them to thrive.
🪴 The vine struggle: Light-loving vines and creepers grow much faster. Without intervention, they literally "strangle" the young trees before they ever get the chance to grow tall.
🪚✂️ Maintenance over planting: Silviculture is the essential kick-start. We must actively protect and "free" young trees until they are large enough to shade the forest floor.

The Bottom Line: Unlike other forest types, rainforest cannot be created by just planting trees, but by ensuring they survive. 🌱🪴🌳

EIN NEUER REGENWALD? 🌱🪴🌳
Einfach Setzlinge in den Boden zu pflanzen, reicht nicht aus, um einen neuen Regenwald entstehen zu lassen.

Warum Bäume pflanzen allein nicht genug ist:
🌥️ Kinder des Schattens: Junge Regenwaldbäume brauchen Schutz. Auf gerodeten Flächen ist es für sie einfach zu heiß und zu hell, um gut zu wachsen.
🪴 Der Kampf mit den Ranken: Lichtliebende Lianen und Kletterpflanzen wachsen viel schneller. Ohne Eingreifen „erwürgen“ sie die jungen Bäume regelrecht, bevor diese überhaupt in die Höhe wachsen können.
🪚✂️ Pflege statt nur pflanzen: Waldpflege ist der entscheidende Startimpuls. Junge Bäume müssen aktiv geschützt und von Konkurrenzpflanzen „befreit“ werden, bis sie groß genug sind, um selbst Schatten zu spenden.

🐘 The last Pygmy Elephants, Orangutans, and other species in Borneo are isolated in their final protected areas by plantations.
