With its core technologies PROFIBUS, PROFINET, IO-Link, and omlox, PI is responsible for the development of market-leading, open standards for all fields of application in industrial manufacturing. Supported by 24 regional PI associations (RPAs) all over the world, 1,700 member companies, and more than 10,000 different products, PI covers all key markets of industrial automation like factory automation, process automation, motion control and safety-related applications. As of 2022, more than 67 million PROFIBUS nodes, 60 million PROFINET nodes, and 35 million IO-Link nodes are installed worldwide! From Pilot Projects to Industrial Application: What Does it Take to Scale MTP?

This was one of the key questions discussed at MTP goes Industry @ Merck.
In his keynote, . Dr. Michelangelo Canzoneri (Merck) highlighted the potential of modular production concepts to reduce engineering effort, shorten time-to-market and increase flexibility through reusable modules and digital twins.

The panel with Härtner (Merck), Schick (Boehringer Ingelheim), Eilers (MEYER WERFT), Haag (BASF) and Maas (Pyrum) showed how different industry requirements can be – while also revealing common priorities: faster integration of package units, lower commissioning risks, simplified engineering and validation, and vendor-independent interfaces.
These topics were taken further in the workshops led by Langer (CTE), Hänsel (Pavis Engineering), Makait (MTP4Pharma), Grahl (Semodia), Mottana (MascoGroup) and Bepperling (tec5).

One key takeaway: modularization needs to be considered early in engineering. Clear system boundaries, defined responsibilities and consistent documentation are essential for successful implementation.

The discussions also confirmed that practical references and cross-industry exchange will be crucial for moving MTP further into industrial use.

Time-SensitiveNetworking and The Future of Industrial Automation

As industrial automation evolves, network convergence is becoming increasingly
important – bringing deterministic real-time communication together with data
streams for applications such as diagnostics, digital twins, AI and virtualized
automation architectures.

In a new article by the IEEE Standards Association, Xaver Schmidt, Chairman of PROFIBUS
& PROFINET International, shares PI’s perspective on the role of IEC/IEEE
60802 in establishing a consistent foundation for converged, deterministic
industrial networks. “Industrial communication is entering a new phase in which convergence is becoming a strategic prerequisite for digital manufacturing.”

PI and its member companies contributed extensively to the development of IEC/IEEE 60802, bringing decades of experience from existing industrial Ethernet technologies and real-world automation applications into the standardization process. PI also contributes to TIACC to advance interoperability and conformance across the industry.

The PI Security Day 2026: Insights and Exchange

The PI Security Day 2026 in Frankfurt brought together experts from across the industrial automation community to discuss current security challenges, practical approaches and the road ahead.

From regulatory developments such as CRA and NIS2 to security concepts for PROFINET and IO-Link, the day offered a mix of technical insights, practical examples and open discussions.
What stood out was the importance of sharing experiences and bringing different perspectives together. A big thank you to all speakers, sponsors and participants for the valuable contributions and the open exchange!

We look forward to continuing these discussions and working together towards secure and interoperable automation solutions.

EU CRA & PROFINET: A Strong Basis for Compliance

From December 2027, the EU Cyber Resilience Act (EU CRA) will require manufacturers of products with digital elements to implement comprehensive cybersecurity measures.

PROFINET already provides the basis for fulfilling many EU CRA requirements today. Manufacturers can use their existing PROFINET installations as a basis and expand them step by step, depending on their individual cybersecurity risk assessment. A new PI White Paper explains how PROFINET specifications ensures EU CRA compliance.

Importantly, many manufacturers can use their existing PROFINET installations as a basis and expand them as needed. However, implementing a protocol alone does not automatically mean EU CRA compliance. Compliance must be assessed for each product individually, based on its specific cybersecurity risks and requirements.
PI also provides additional support through guidelines, certification, test bundles, Netload Robustness Tests and its Cybersecurity Incident Response Team.

Advancing Functional Safety - From Machines to Process Plants

PI continues to strengthen PROFIsafe with an updated specification, comprehensive test infrastructure, and revised application profiles.
Key developments include support for scalable systems through BaseID, enhanced safe drive communication, IO-Link Safety down to the sensor and actuator level, and the planned expansion of PROFIsafe into process automation.
