Hector Fellow Academy

Hector Fellow Academy Interdisciplinary Network for Cutting-Edge Research The Hector Fellow Academy is a young academy of sciences.

It offers a platform for networking, interdisciplinary exchange, and mutual inspiration to the laureates of the Hector Science Award. In addition, the Academy supports promising young scientists. The Hector Fellow Academy (HFA) was founded in 2013. Today, this network consists of over 50 scientists working in the areas of natural and engineering sciences. New research topics and innovation are ins

tigated by bringing together these outstanding scientists across institutions and scientific disciplines. The HFA strengthens research in Germany and contributes to solving global challenges by raising awareness of socio-political issues.

🎥 Recap: 11th Science Evening of the Hector Fellow Academy

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Munich and via livestream for this year's Science Evening: "What Can Children Teach Us — The Future of Personalized Medicine?"

Together with our speakers, Prof. Dr. Dr. Christoph Klein, Prof. Dr. Josef Penninger, and Claudia Kittel, we explored how advances in personalized medicine, rare disease research, and children’s participation are shaping new perspectives in healthcare. ✨

A special highlight of the panel discussion was the participation of children and adolescents from the Children and Youth Research Council in Munich, initiated by Christoph Klein. Their involvement brought an important perspective to the conversation and underscored the importance of including young people in medical research and healthcare discussions. 👧🧒

The evening concluded with an engaging panel discussion moderated by Ralph Caspers, which created a dialogue between science, society, and the audience. 🎙️

🎬 Children’s Rights in Focus – New Video Portrait of Christoph Klein

We’re proud to present our new video portrait featuring Hector Fellow Prof. Dr. Dr. Christoph Klein, Professor of pediatrics and adolescent medicine and the Director of the Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.

In the video, he shares insights into his pioneering research on cell and gene therapy for children with rare inherited blood and immune system disorders. His work centers on identifying genetic causes, understanding disease mechanisms, and translating this knowledge into targeted therapeutic strategies. At the heart of his work is a strong commitment to children with conditions that are often overlooked because they are so rare, and a conviction that rare diseases deserve the same attention in research and treatment as common ones.

The video also features two Young Scientists, Daniel Roman Petersheim and Megha Mukherjee. Their work bridges the gap between molecular biology and clinical applications in the field of rare blood and immune diseases. 🔬

Beyond the laboratory and clinic, the video reveals what truly drives Dr. Klein: advocating for children’s rights in medicine, raising awareness of rare diseases, and giving young patients a voice through initiatives such as the Care-for-Rare Foundation.

🚨 TV Feature Alert 🚨

We're thrilled to share that Hector RCD awardee Prof. Dr. Kerstin Göpfrich appears in episode three of the new three-part ARD documentary "S*x and the Scientists · Wie wir künftig Kinder kriegen".

In this episode, Prof. Göpfrich shares her expertise at the intersection of biology and nanotechnology. Her research aims to better understand the principles of life by building artificial cells from the bottom up. Using tools such as DNA and RNA origami, her lab creates synthetic components that mimic the behavior of living systems, such as artificial cytoskeletons, membrane transport, and synthetic cell division.🧬

Her work provides a foundation for the next generation of bioengineering and raises important questions about how we define life in a laboratory setting.
