Bodily autonomy is still out of reach for many women around the world. On average, women globally have only 64% of the rights granted to men. Nearly one in three women experiences physical or sexual violence during her lifetime. In more than half of all countries, r**e is not even prosecuted as a criminal offence.

Crises, wars and political decisions are further worsening this situation. Programmes for comprehensive sexuality education and reproductive health are increasingly under pressure – even though they are essential for preventing violence and enabling people to make decisions about their own bodies and lives.

On International Women’s Day, the message is more important than ever: women’s rights are human rights. Bodily autonomy must not be a privilege – it must be a right for everyone.

Today, on HPV Awareness Day, we highlight an important fact: cervical cancer is preventable - if we act consistently.

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are a group of more than 200 viruses that infect the skin and mucous membranes. They are a major cause of cancer, particularly cervical cancer. More than 90% of cervical cancer cases are linked to HPV. Each year, around 660,000 women are diagnosed and 350,000 lose their lives to the disease worldwide. Countries with low- and middle-income economies are disproportionately affected, accounting for about 90% of all deaths.

Despite this, access to prevention remains highly unequal. High costs, logistical challenges such as maintaining the cold chain, limited infrastructure, the need for multiple vaccine doses, and the lack of screening programs - especially in resource-limited settings - continue to create barriers. This is particularly concerning given that a highly effective vaccine has been available for years.

Eliminating cervical cancer will require all countries to reduce and maintain incidence rates below four cases per 100,000 women. Achieving this goal demands improved diagnostics, innovative therapies, and practical, scalable solutions for prevention and monitoring.

When young people have safe places where they feel respected, understood, and heard, they gain the confidence to learn, grow, and make informed choices about their futures.

At DSW, we see the power of youth-friendly spaces every day—especially when education happens at eye level. Peer-to-peer learning creates trust, breaks stigma, and empowers young people to support one another with knowledge and care.

Investing in youth-friendly spaces is investing in empowered, informed, and resilient generations.

Female ge***al mutilation (FGM) is a horrific human rights violation. It has no medical benefits and causes lifelong harm.

Over 230 million women and girls are living with the physical and emotional consequences, and 4 million more are at risk of FGM every year.

FGM is present almost worldwide in 94 countries making it far more than a tradition, but only 61% of these countries have laws explicitly prohibiting it!

Alarmingly, 66% of recent cases were carried out by health professionals! We cannot let medicalisation turn into the normalisation of the practice.

FGM is not tradition.
It is not religion.
It is violence.

Survivors deserve care, protection, and to be heard. By raising awareness and protecting girls, we can help end FGM for good.

Protect girls. Support survivors. End FGM.

Before DSW got involved, Fasika’s community faced many cases of sexual and gender-based violence, and some people even contracted HIV. Since DSW has been active in her community, these incidents have dropped significantly - a truly remarkable change. 🙌🏽

Our work wouldn’t be possible without peer facilitators like Fasika, who lead by example, educate their peers, and create safe spaces for open dialogue. They bring gender equality to life, empowering youth to build confidence, interact respectfully, and access fair opportunities.

Together, we’re building a community where everyone has the chance to thrive.

Zubeida became a mother for the first time as a teenager.

Life can be tough for every young girl facing motherhood at such a young age. But for Zubeida it was especially challenging as her family was struggling financially.

Zubeida’s life began to change when she joined the Msambweni Queens. Through a safe and supportive space, she gained access to essential SRHR information and services, and connected with other young women who truly understood her journey.

Today, the Msambweni Queens is more than a club - it’s a community where young women are heard, supported, and empowered to build a better future for themselves and their children.

Today is International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM)!

It is time for this serious human rights violation to end. FGM involves the partial or complete removal of the external female ge***alia, or other injuries to female ge***al organs, without any medical necessity. FGM has no health benefits; instead, it causes severe physical and psychological harm and undermines the autonomy and equality of women and girls.

Worldwide, millions of girls are affected – often at a very young age. The practice reflects deeply rooted gender inequality and is sustained by social pressure, fear of exclusion, and false cultural or religious justifications.

Through education, political accountability, international cooperation, and the protection of affected girls and women, we can end FGM. To achieve the global goal of eliminating FGM by 2030, progress must accelerate significantly.

Bodily Autonomy is fundamental to equality and to living a healthy, fulfilled life. Yet many women around the world are denied this freedom. Without access to contraception, healthcare, or safe abortion services, their ability to plan their futures and make personal decisions is severely restricted.

This is where our work comes in. We expand access to information and medical care and support people in making self-determined choices, because everyone has the right to shape their own life.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect more than 1 billion people worldwide, yet effective treatments and diagnostics are still often unavailable, unsuitable, or unsafe.

Science can end the neglect: but only if we act together.

This , we join to call for greater investment in research and innovation to deliver life-saving solutions to the people who need them most.
