One of the world’s biggest challenges is hidden hunger, which leads due to a lack of micro nutrition to under development and deficiencies. That is why a broad and efficient solution is needed with guaranteed access for everyone. At this point the project insectus engages together with its local co-partner "Sambia Förderverein e.V." and empowers people with the maxim “aid for self-help” by giving
them a chance to sustainably improve their livelihoods. That is why we would like to introduce here the black soldier fly (Hermatia illucens):
We help the persons working with us to overcome two main struggles. Because of the high level of protein in the larvae, we counter deficiencies and underdevelopment of children. With only 7 grams of dried larvae we can cover the recommended daily amount of iron for children of the age 7 to 11 and face therefore the lack of iron. Furthermore, leads the insects’ relatively short lifetime span to an exponentially increasing population which can be fed by all organic waste. Due to the mass of output, the larvae can be sold cheaply and still create a high return. Starting point is the build-up of a house-sized insect farm and which runs independently and sustainably creating income for a local partner. We will provide a starter kid of materials and will go together through the first phases of farming to explain the features of breeding the black soldier fly. Additionally, we will introduce to the entrepreneur our business model which will be implemented with targeted marketing actions in the village. The farmer creates a stable income when he sells the larvae to villagers as nutritional supplement. With these to pillars we enable people to be self-reliant and successful. Because we believe that investing in entrepreneurial action for others creates a better world for us all.
