If you're Nigerian and living in Germany, and you've been thinking about going home, you can stop by the Nigerian Embassy in Berlin during the week and sit down with an ARRIVES coach.

The coach isn't embassy staff, and what you say isn't shared with the embassy or with German immigration. You don't need an appointment, and you can end the conversation at any time.

Information materials are also on display at the embassy, so you can read them on the spot or take a copy home.

Many Nigerians go abroad to have a shot at a better life for themselves and their families.

When they decide that it’s time to return home, their families or communities can mock them for coming back with nothing.

Because of this, many Nigerians stay abroad rather than come home to shame.

Rosemary Uwoghiren, a market women leader in Benin City, has advice for the mothers.

“Stigma is the biggest problem. And to surmount it, we need community entry points.”

Dr. Loretta Ogboro-Okor, Director-General of Edo State Diaspora Agency, is not waiting for stigma to resolve itself. Her team is reaching people through churches, community networks, and trusted spaces, making sure that Nigerians thinking about returning home can access clear information about what support is available.

ARRIVES works with partners like Edo State Diaspora Agency so that when someone is ready to ask, the right information is already within reach.

Dominic spent ten years in Germany before deciding to come home. He was still working when he made that choice.

A year ago, we first visited him at his farm in Edo State, not long after he had set up his pig pen.

We caught up with him again recently at our community outreach in Edo.

In this video, he talks about what worried him before returning, what ARRIVES coaching helped him sort out before he left Germany, and how the farm has grown to over 12 young pigs in under a year.

Not everyone who goes abroad comes back to celebration. Some come back to silence. Or worse, to judgment from the people closest to them.

Osato May of migration_moments_with_may is speaking to something many communities overlook: the stigma returnees can face after choosing to come home.

Her ask is simple. When someone decides to return, receive them well. Because behind every return is a human story.

For many Nigerians considering return, the journey home is not only about travel, work, or next steps. It can also bring a quiet fear: how will people see me when I come back?

🎥Chief Dauda Dogo of Karonmajiji District shares a message for families and communities about why acceptance matters when someone returns home.
