🌳 Tackling Climate Change with Agroforestry in Tanzania

Agroforestry is transforming coffee farming in Tanzania. Godfrey Wilgod, Climate Change and Agronomy Coordinator for ICP projects in Tanzania, describes agroforestry as cultivating perennial trees and crops in close combination, particularly with coffee. By integrating rows of shade trees alongside coffee crops, farmers tackle climate change, protect the environment, enhance productivity, and secure their livelihoods.

🌱As part of an ICP project in Tanzania, over 10,200 shade trees have already been distributed to coffee farmers in the Mbeya and Songwe regions, reaching more than 850 farming households.

Dynamic agroforestry offers numerous benefits for coffee farmers:

✅ Healthier soils & better water conservation – Trees reduce soil erosion, enhance fertility, and help retain moisture, creating ideal conditions for coffee growth.

✅ Increased biodiversity & climate resilience – Agroforestry provides habitats for pollinators and beneficial insects while mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration.

✅ Diversified income through carbon trading & additional crops – Farmers can generate extra income by growing fruit, timber, and trading Carbon Reduction Units (CRUs).

Gender equality in farming households!

At ICP, we promote gender equality in all our projects and opt for balanced decision taking and fair distribution of work in farming households.
Women and men should see themselves as equal partners with shared opportunities and responsibilities in farming and household activities.

Our activities are committed to
✅ Providing women with full access to training and climate education
✅ Strengthening their role in household decision-making
✅ Empowering women as members and leaders in farmer organizations

We are happy to report that the number of women enrolled in ICP projects has steadily increased over the years, and the participation rate lies at 40 % now!

𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆🤝

More than 20 years ago, a group of family-owned coffee companies came together with a shared vision: to collaborate pre-competitively and support smallholder coffee farming families in improving their livelihoods. This vision led to the founding of International Coffee Partners in 2001.

At the heart of our partnership are family businesses that share the same values. But as 𝐑𝐮𝐢 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐍𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐨, 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐞, points out, there is another key element:

“𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆—𝗮 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆-𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀. 𝗪𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻—𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹.”

Over the years, we have driven impactful projects focusing on gender equality, youth empowerment, family businesses, farmer organizations, and climate change adaptation.
As a result, smallholder coffee farming families have become more resilient and competitive.

And we’re not stopping here—together, we will continue to do more!

🚀 Kicking Off the 2nd Phase of the Semear Program for Rural Youth in Brazil! 🌱

Exciting news! 📢 📢

Young people (16–29 years old) from the Campo das Vertentes region are enrolled in the Semear Program, which equips them with the skills and opportunities to thrive in their local regions instead of migrating to urban centers.

After successfully completing the first phase of the program with theoretical training, these young participants are now entering the second phase! 🎯
They can choose between seven mentoring groups and will dive deep into different areas of knowledge.

The topics include:
🌱 Coffee Growing & Climate Change
🐄 AgroDiversity: Dairy Cattle, Beef Cattle & Grains
💡 Entrepreneurship
📊 Business Management
🔬 Technology in the Field
💰 Financial Management
☕ Coffee Quality & Marketing

🌟 Emotional Intelligence & Family Succession will also be addressed within the mentoring groups, ensuring that participants develop essential interpersonal skills and learn strategies for successful family business transitions.

We wish the young people participating in the Semear Program a great start to the second phase! ✨

Together, let’s empower the next generation of rural leaders and build a prosperous future in the countryside! 💚

🌏A Unique Setup for Growth!

We’re happy to share that 23,389 farming households participated in our ICP projects last year!
What a remarkable journey it’s been since we started in 2001 with just 1,000 households. Fast forward to today, and we've proudly collaborated with a total of 122,419 farming families worldwide.

At ICP, our mission goes beyond project work. We drive lasting change by partnering with smallholder coffee farmer families, communities, and the entire coffee sector.
Together, we aim at:
✅ Improved and diversified production systems at the farm level
✅ Sustainable agricultural practices
✅ Strong farmer organizations
✅ Gender equality at all levels
✅ Youth empowerment as decision-makers

As we look ahead, we’re committed to continue growing collectively and making 2025 a year of sustainable solutions and meaningful impact!

🚀 𝐖𝐞’𝐯𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑! 🌍☕️
In 2023, the global coffee sector faced significant challenges, from climate change-induced crop failures to soaring production costs. Smallholder farmers were particularly affected by extreme weather, market volatility, and rising input prices. Despite increases in coffee prices in some regions, the profitability of coffee farming has been under immense pressure.

At ICP, together with our partner Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung, we focused on promoting 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 and 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 to support smallholder farming families to build resilience, improve food security, and ensure sustainable livelihoods. 🌱💪

💡 Our report also highlights our ongoing commitment to gender equality and youth involvement in all focus countries.

In Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola, coffee farming communities impressively improved not only coffee yield and income:

🌱 Farmer Organization Development: 12 coffee farmers’ cooperatives have been strengthened to provide embedded services to their members and leverage on existing services from the public and private sectors.

📈 Coffee yields increased from 593 kg/ha to 1149.7 kg/ha.

💵 Annual household income increased from $522.5 USD to $732 USD.

🌾Adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) increased by 56%, and Climate Smart Agricultural Practices (CSA) increased by 34%, ensuring resilience against climate challenges.

🥗 Enhancing Food Security: Households experiencing food insecurity dropped by 4%, while adaptive capacity to climate change improved by 56%.

👩‍🌾 Female participation in coffee farmer cooperatives increased by 6%.

Building on best practices and experience from these projects, we are turning our attention to Kyotera and Rakai districts where coffee farming families are facing constraints that align with the broader offerings of our projects.☕🌱

𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 💪💥
Despite societal resistance, Atu Watson, a widow and mother from Itaka Ward, Tanzania, challenged traditional norms and reshaped her life. 🌍💪 Although the community has traditionally been against women owning land and farming coffee, a crop believed to be meant for men, she ventured into coffee farming in 2021 and quickly made her mark.

Through agronomy training within the ICP project, Atu gained knowledge on good agricultural practices, entrepreneurship, and business skills. Her one-acre farm now thrives with 750 coffee trees! 🌳✨ Her first harvest yielded 25 kg of coffee cherry, generating 115,000 Tsh, and she expects even more next year.

But Atu’s success doesn’t stop there - she also runs a food vending business that now brings in over 3,120,000 Tsh annually, a huge leap from her previous earnings. 📈💰 Her wise investments cover her daughter's school fees and the purchase of ducks and goats. 🐐

A true role model in her society, Atu's success is changing people’s perceptions about women. She actively shares her knowledge, helping other women understand coffee production and follow her path. 🚀

ICP's and AMAGRI's goal is to connect rural women with the market, strengthen their businesses, and increase the visibility of family farming in the Perdões region.

🏅 The Speciality Coffee Competition had 10 winners, of which 5 participate in the ICP project in Brazil.

Attending speciality coffee competitions contributes to the social and economic sustainability of rural communities. By improving the economic viability of small farms, these competitions help to guarantee the continuity of family farming and the conservation of traditional knowledge. In addition, the recognition obtained through the competitions can inspire new generations to invest in coffee growing, ensuring the perpetuation of this important economic and cultural activity. 🔝

Over three impactful days in Bahir Dar City, Ethiopia, women change agents, facilitators, and leaders in the CAFE II project learned vital skills in leadership and facilitation. We are funding the CAFE II project in the Amhara region together with the Austrian Development Agency.

Training highlights were:

💭 Self-development, self-awareness, and mastering facilitation techniques.

🌡 Effective facilitation, conflict resolution, and core leadership skills.

🙌 Team building, time management, decision-making, and gender dynamics in leadership.

Participants left with enhanced skills, practical tools, and a network of peers ready to drive positive change in their communities.

Together, we are striving for a brighter, more inclusive future! 🎉
