🍂🦔 Here is our next monthly challenge: Let’s help our native cope with the colder season and thus protect and support in your area.
Let’s get started:
Provide Food
Install bird feeders: Birds may have difficulty finding food in the winter. Provide a variety of seeds, grains, nuts and mealworms in bird feeders to support them.
No bread for birds; it can harm them.
Provide Water
Keep a fresh water source clean and unfrozen, such as a bird bath, in an insulated bowl.
Create Shelters
Build or maintain insulated nest boxes.
Leave brush piles or log stacks.
Leave Garden Debris
Leaf litter, fallen branches, and other garden debris provide shelter and foraging areas for insects and small creatures.
Plant Winter-Friendly Vegetation
Plant evergreen shrubs and trees as year-round cover.
Shrubs like holly, cotoneaster, and other berry-bearing plants provide a food source for wildlife during the colder months.
Educate your community about the importance of helping wildlife during the winter and encourage your neighbours to do the same.
Support local policies and initiatives that protect and promote wildlife habitat preservation in your area.
Be Mindful of Wildlife Habits.
Some animals hibernate in the winter. Be cautious not to disturb their nests, burrows, or hiding places.
Monitor Wildlife Health.
If you encounter a sick or injured animal, contact local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation centres for assistance.
