The International Federation for Emergency Medicine is an international association composed of national emergency medicine organisations that are members of the IFEM as defined by these bylaws. IFEM represents a co-ordinating consortium of these organisations. The IFEM was founded in 1989 and its purpose is "to promote at an international level, interchange, understanding and co-operation among p

hysicians practicing emergency medicine". This page is a daily review of emergency medicine stories from around the world. We can learn from each other as we strive for a universal standard of excellence in emergency care delivery.

At , IFEM launched its Standards for Emergency Department Quality Certification – the first international standards of their kind, providing a unified framework for excellence in emergency departments worldwide.
Developed by international emergency medicine experts, the standards establish evidence-based benchmarks that support emergency departments in delivering high-quality, ethical, and patient-centred care while driving continuous improvement in quality, patient safety, governance, and operational performance.
More than a certification framework, the standards establish a shared international benchmark for emergency department quality, supporting efforts to strengthen systems, elevate standards of care, and improve outcomes for patients worldwide.
Alongside the launch of the standards, IFEM signed a 10-year strategic agreement with TASNEEF (The Emirates Classification Society) to support the global delivery of the IFEM Emergency Department Quality Certification Programme.
The programme has already been successfully piloted at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (UAE), Sparsh Hospital Hennur (India), and Manila Doctors Hospital (Philippines), demonstrating its applicability across diverse healthcare systems and settings.
Because every patient deserves access to safe, high-quality emergency care – wherever they are in the world.

A huge congratulations to Dr Judith Reece, whose innovative post-discharge support tool, REX, has been named the recipient of the IFEM Visionary Industry Technology Award (VITA) 2026.
Designed to support patients during the critical hours and days following discharge, REX provides accessible, patient-centred guidance that reinforces discharge instructions, helps patients understand what to expect, and supports informed decisions about when to seek further care.
Developed with global applicability in mind, REX is already evolving through international collaboration, multilingual capabilities, and planned research initiatives aimed at strengthening post-discharge care and improving outcomes.
At its heart, REX reflects a simple but powerful idea: emergency care does not end at discharge.
We are proud to recognise this remarkable technology and look forward to seeing the continued impact of REX as it helps shape the future of emergency care around the world.

From strengthening emergency care systems and advancing research in Ghana to championing emergency medicine across Africa and beyond, Dr Joseph Bonney has dedicated his career to improving emergency care through leadership, innovation, education, and global collaboration.

IFEM is proud to recognise these outstanding contributions with the Fellowship of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (FIFEM) 2026.

This distinguished honour recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of emergency medicine and the development of IFEM internationally.

As President of the African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM), a WHO Basic Emergency Care Master Trainer, and an active contributor to IFEM initiatives, Dr Bonney has played a pivotal role in strengthening emergency care systems, advancing research and innovation, and developing the emergency care workforce across Africa and globally. His leadership has helped expand access to education, build research capacity, and support the growth of emergency medicine as a specialty in resource-limited settings and beyond.

Through his commitment to workforce development, research, emergency care systems strengthening, and global engagement, Dr Bonney has made a lasting impact on the specialty and the communities it serves.

For more than three decades, Associate Professor Sally McCarthy has dedicated her career to strengthening emergency care, supporting clinicians, developing future leaders, and advancing emergency medicine across the globe.

This year, IFEM is proud to recognise that extraordinary legacy with the 2026 Gautam Bodiwala Lifetime Leadership Achievement Award.

Named in honour of Dr Gautam Bodiwala CBE – a pioneer of emergency medicine, founding President of IFEM, and one of the driving forces behind the global development of the specialty – the award is IFEM's highest honour and recognises outstanding and enduring contributions to both IFEM and the international emergency medicine community.

As the first woman elected to serve as IFEM President, A/Prof McCarthy provided exceptional leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, helped strengthen IFEM's collaboration with the World Health Organization, and has been a driving force behind emergency medicine education, specialty development, and global partnerships throughout her distinguished career.

Through her leadership, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to advancing emergency care, A/Prof McCarthy has made a lasting impact on our specialty and on countless colleagues, patients, and communities worldwide.
