Hamburger Gesellschaft für Thaiistik - HGT Thai Studies (Thaiistik) Department of Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia at the Asia-Africa Institute, University of Hamburg

"Exciting special lectures, mostly of academic nature about various topics related to Thailand and its closest neighbors. Together with the Hamburg Association of Thai Studies (HGT) we are organizing around 12 special lectures per year. Such presentations pertain to language, literature, history, culture, religion, society and politics. They are held by scholars – professors and lecturers as well

as advanced students – and social activists either in German or English language. They come from Hamburg, other parts of Germany or even overseas. Each presentation (c. 45–60 minutes) is followed by a fruitful and inspiring round of discussion. We also initiate exhibitions, film presentations and other cultural activities. We usually meet at Africa Asian Institute, University of Hamburg."

The very first time of our Society to present research in Korean waves in Thailand. Kamon Butsaban’s lecture will demonstrate Korean trends and popularity that have strong influences on a wide range of social and economic perspectives, as well as encourage young people to engage in social discourses. Lifestyles, aesthetics, social values, beauty trends, culinary habits, and Korean language have thus evolved in response to the Korean waves in Thailand in the past two decades.

Roger Casas’s new released monograph presents new behaviors of Tai Lue monks and novices who have become involved in mundane practices, such as having afternoon meals, competeing in sports, being in romantic relationship, and even drinking alcohol. Monastic disciplines are being challenged, while these practices are considered a vernacular discipline being concerned with maturing boys into men. Discover Roger’s discovery and research by joining our online lecture.

Gen Z’s growing political awareness, rooted in Thailand’s history, shapes how young people interpret the October 6 commemoration events. Today’s youth are engaging with the past politically—reinterpreting events, constructing alternative narratives, and using memory to critique authoritarianism, confront impunity, and promote democracy. In her HGT online lecture, our next speaker, Bancharat Polpila from the University of Passau, will examine the commemorations at Thammasat University from 2018 to 2025 and highlight how countermemory challenges official silence and enables young people to envision a more democratic future.

Dr. Friedrich Schäfer, a German surgeon who served in the Siamese army between 1909 and 1914, made significant contributions to the advancement of medical and surgical education and assisted in the construction of advanced military hospitals in Bangkok and the surrounding region. Kornkanok Khetnongbua’s scholarly investigation on Dr. Friedrich Schäfer reveals historical facts on this German doctor in the period of colonialist influences throughout Southeast Asia.

Karandeep Singh, a PhD candidate at Universität Hamburg, will deliver a brilliant lecture on his recently finished MA thesis that was impressively evaluated with the grade Very Good. He will discuss cremation volumes in early twentieth-century Siam as tools for negotiating power between genders, between center and periphery, and between Siam and the world, while contributing to scholarship on intra-Asian modernities and memory studies.
