Monday afternoon, our NADIR crew spotted 36 people in distress on a grey rubber boat. The case corresponded to the alert sent by Watch the Med - Alarm Phone. The boat was overcrowded, had already been taking in water and was drifting as the engine had failed – the risk of capsizing was imminent. The civil reconnaissance aircraft Albatross 1 from SOS MEDITERRANEE was also on scene, supporting with their presence. Upon first contact, the crew informed the competent authorities, distributed life vests, and initiated the evacuation. 36 people could safely board NADIR – 18 of them unaccompanied minors. Many were exhausted and dehydrated and needed medical support.

The authorities confirmed Lampedusa as port of safety, where all survivors could disembark safely. We wish them all the best for the journey ahead.

Throughout this rotation, Libyan militia assets were present at sea on multiple occasions – a stark reminder that capsizing is not the only danger people face on this route. EU-financed and strategised illegal interceptions remain a constant threat for people seeking safety on the central Mediterranean. The survivors told our crew they had gone through hell and torture in Libya and their biggest fear during the crossing was being forcibly returned there.

The past weeks once again showed the deadly constitution of Fortress Europe’s borders – and, hence, the reason why we go out. An intense three week rotation is now coming to an end. In early September, the NADIR will return to the .

Yesterday, shortly after midnight, the NADIR crew made contact with a black rubber boat in distress off the Tunisian coast. The boat was taking on water and was at risk of sinking, so the crew brought everyone aboard immediately. A Mayday relay was sent right away. Within minutes, all five people were safe: four men and one woman, suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and lack of food and shelter.

All five guests arrived safely in Lampedusa later that day. We wish them all the best for their journey ahead.

Gestern, kurz nach Mitternacht, nahm die NADIR-Crew vor der tunesischen Küste Kontakt zu Personen auf einem schwarzen Schlauchboot in Not auf. Das Boot nahm Wasser auf und drohte zu sinken, weshalb sofort ein Mayday Relay abgesetzt wurde und die Crew alle Passagiere sofort an Bord holte. Innerhalb weniger Minuten waren alle fünf Personen in Sicherheit: vier Männer und eine Frau, die unter Erschöpfung, Dehydrierung sowie Mangel an Nahrung und geschützter Unterkunft litten.

Alle fünf Passagiere kamen später am selben Tag sicher auf Lampedusa an. Wir wünschen ihnen alles Gute für ihren weiteren Weg.

Message from the Crew

On 15 August, once again, we witnessed the result of the racist, violent EU border regime: 3 more lives lost. 3 lives, full of hopes and promises, thrown down the walls of Fortress Europe and left to sink into oblivion.

These deaths were not an accident. These deaths are the consequences of inhumane European border policies. These deaths were completely preventable. Our only source of solace is that those three victims of EU border violence have witnesses:

We saw them. We mourn them. And we won’t stop exposing the truth!

We denounce the guilt of the border regime and stand with people on the move for their freedom of movement. All our support and solidarity are with the lost ones, their families, and all the crews on air and at sea who monitored.

Am 15. August wurden wir wieder einmal Zeuge der Folgen des rassistischen, gewaltsamen EU-Grenzregimes: Drei weitere Menschenleben wurden ausgelöscht. Drei Leben voller Hoffnungen und Versprechen, die über die Mauern der Festung Europa geworfen und dem Vergessen überlassen wurden.

Diese Todesfälle waren kein Unfall. Sie sind die Konsequenz einer menschenverachtenden europäischen Grenzpolitik. Diese Todesfälle hätten vollständig verhindert werden können. Unser einziger Trost ist, dass diese drei Opfer europäischer Gewalt an den Grenzen Zeugen haben:

Wir haben sie gesehen. Wir trauern um sie. Und wir werden nicht aufhören, die Wahrheit ans Licht zu bringen!

Wir klagen die Schuld des Grenzregimes an und wir stehen an der Seite aller Flüchtenden und für ihre Bewegungsfreiheit. All unsere Unterstützung und Solidarität gelten den Verstorbenen, ihren Familien und allen Crews in der Luft und auf See, die das Geschehene beobachtet haben.

On Monday afternoon, our crew joined a commemoration in Lampedusa for the 20 people who lost their lives in recent days and whose bodies were sighted since the weekend. Some had been encountered by our crew, who paid them a final tribute.

That evening, the NADIR set sail again to search for a distress case reported by Watch the Med - Alarm Phone: 31 people without life jackets on an overcrowded silver rubber boat. The search was called off after learning the Coast Guard had evacuated everyone.

Early Tuesday morning, our crew spotted 36 people without life jackets on an unmanoeuvrable, grey rubber boat taking on water. Due to the danger, our crew swiftly evacuated everyone, including ca. 20 minors. Three survivors suffered sfrom evere dehydration and fuel burn. Two days after departing Libya, the NADIR brought them to Lampedusa yesterday at 1:00 p.m. where everybody could disembark safely.

Am Montagnachmittag nahm unsere Crew an einer Gedenkfeier auf Lampedusa teil. Sie gedachten der ca. 20 Menschen, die in den vergangenen Tagen im zentralen Mittelmeer ihr Leben verloren und deren Leichname am Wochenende gesichtet wurden. Einige hatte unsere Crew auf See angetroffen und ihnen die letzte Ehre erwiesen.

Noch am Montagabend stach die NADIR wieder in See, um nach einem von Alarm Phone gemeldeten Notfall zu suchen: 31 Menschen ohne Rettungswesten auf einem überbesetzten, silbernen Schlauchboot. Die Suche wurde abgebrochen, da die Küstenwache alle evakuiert hatte.

In den frühen Morgenstunden des Dienstags entdeckte unsere Crew 36 Personen ohne Rettungsequipment auf einem manövrierunfähigen Schlauchboot, das bereits Wasser zog. Wir evakuierten alle umgehend, darunter etwa 20 Minderjährige. Drei Personen litten an schweren Dehydrierungen und chemischen Verbrennungen, erzeugt durch das Salzwasser-Treibstoff-Gemisch im Boot.

Nach zwei Tagen auf See brachte die NADIR gestern um 13:00 Uhr alle nach Lampedusa, wo sie sicher an Land gehen konnten.

NADIR crew locates three dead people and brings 13 alive to safety.

On Saturday evening, our crew aboard NADIR spotted three people in the water and our medical team confirmed the deaths. The bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition. NADIR was not equipped to recover them. The crew alerted the authorities and urged them to act so that the deceased might still be identified.

Shortly thereafter, Watch the Med - Alarm Phone had alerted the crew to 13 people in distress on white fibre glass boat near by with one broken engine and neither food nor water nor life saving equipment aboard. The crew responded and startet searching for the boat. At times they feared they wouldn’t find it.

In the early morning hours, our crew eventually found them: adrift, with nothing left to survive on. The crew evacuated all 13 people onto NADIR. Among them were six unaccompanied minors. Several people were suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and lack of food and shelter. Yesterday, all disembarked in Lampedusa.

While wishing the survivors strength, our crew is left with grief and anger over these preventable deaths. With multiple bodies spotted recently, we fear unrecorded shipwrecks, and countless lives lost unnoticed. These two days showed once again how close life and death are at Europe’s border: often separated only by whether help arrives in time.

Die letzten Tage waren intensiven Vorbereitungen gewidmet; vom Aufstocken der Vorräte über Sicherheits- und Erste-Hilfe-Briefings bis hin zu Person-über-Bord-Manöver (POB), RHIB- und Tender-Trainings auf dem Wasser. Nun ist unsere Crew an Board der NADIR zurück auf See und bald wieder voll einsatzbereit, um Menschen in Seenot zu unterstützen.

Währenddessen fixierten sich die Schlagzeilen auf einen angeblichen „Ansturm“ auf die spanische Exklave Ceuta und bedienten damit Narrative, die weitere Militarisierung und Grenzkontrollen rechtfertigen, statt zu fragen, warum Menschen gezwungen sind, solche Risiken einzugehen.

Stranded on a platform for two days!

Responding to a distress alert from Watch the Med - Alarm Phone, our NADIR crew located five young Somali men (aged 16 to 20) stranded on the abandoned Didon oil platform.

Shortly after midnight, after three days exposed to the elements, our crew safely evacuated them on to the NADIR.

The men had departed from Zawiya, Libya. To survive on the platform – unused for years – they relied on expired drinking water found on site. All five suffered acute exhaustion and dehydration.

For most of the group, who left Somalia as minors, this was the culmination of a two-year journey. All five had two face imprisonment in Libyan detention centers and had to work hard to being able to fund this single crossing. With no financial means for another try, if the attempt failed, they were not sure if they would be able to go back to Somalia or have to face death in Libya.

Yesterday, they went safely ashore in Lampedusa. We admire their bravery and wish them all the best for what lies ahead.

Zwei Tage auf einer Plattform gestrandet!

Nach einem Notruf von Watch the Med - Alarm Phone ortete unsere NADIR-Crew fünf junge Somali (im Alter von 16 bis 20 Jahren) auf der verlassenen Ölplattform Didon.

Nach drei Tagen schutzlos auf See holte unsere Crew sie kurz nach Mitternacht sicher an Bord der NADIR.

Die Männer waren im libyschen Zawiya gestartet. Um auf der seit Jahren ungenutzten Plattform zu überleben, tranken sie dort vorgefundenes, abgelaufenes Wasser. Alle fünf waren extrem erschöpft und dehydriert.

Für die meisten begann die Flucht aus Somalia vor zwei Jahren als Minderjährige. Alle verbrachten Zeit in libyschen Haftzentren und arbeiteten hart, um diesen einzigen Versuch der Überfahrt zu bezahlen. Ohne Mittel für einen zweiten Versuch wussten sie bei einem Scheitern nicht, ob sie überhaupt nach Somalia zurückkehren könnten oder in Libyen dem Tod gegenüberstehen würden.

Gestern gingen sie in Lampedusa sicher an Land. Wir bewundern ihren Mut und wünschen ihnen für ihre Zukunft nur das Beste.

Rap!fugees are a Hamburg-based creative collective that lives all facets of Hip-Hop through rap, beatboxing, scratching, and breakdancing. Founded in 2017 during the G20 protests, they combine old-school, trap, and global influences – completely free of ego-driven shows, but packed with purpose. Following a Mayday Relay by Watch the Med - Alarm Phone, on Thursday, our crew spotted an overcrowded rubber boat in distress. 27 people had been at sea for three days after departing Zuwara, Libya.

Among them were 15 women (one pregnant), twelve men, and six minors – including two young girls travelling completely alone. They had no life jackets, and a 1-metre swell was spilling water into their unseaworthy boat.

Our crew completed the evacuation safely. The pregnant survivor was med-evacuated by the Italian Coast Guard, while all others received medical care aboard NADIR until safely disembarking in Lampedusa the day after.

While cases like this show the daily reality on the Mediterranean, the media is currently fixated on a surge of arrivals in Ceuta – pushing emergency narratives that serve to justify further militarisation, deterrence and border controls. Instead of highlighting why people feel forced to take such extreme risks, this “emergency” is intentional and entrenched to accept daily deaths at sea. We call for the root causes to be dismantled and hold those in power accountable.

Nach einem von Watch the Med - Alarm Phone weitergeleiteten Mayday Relay entdeckte unsere Crew am Donnerstag 27 Menschen auf einem überfüllten Schlauchboot in Seenot. Nach ihrer Abreise aus Zuwara (Libyen) waren sie bereits seit drei Tagen auf See.

Unter ihnen waren 15 Frauen (eine davon schwanger), zwölf Männer und sechs Minderjährige – darunter zwei Mädchen, die völlig allein reisten. Sie hatten keine Schwimmwesten, und meterhohe Wellen schwappten kontinuierlich in das untüchtige Boot.

Unsere Crew konnte die Evakuierung sicher abschließen. Die schwangere Schutzsuchende wurde von der italienischen Küstenwache medizinisch ans Festland evakuiert. Alle anderen wurden an Bord der NADIR versorgt, bis sie am Folgetag sicher in Lampedusa an Land gingen.

Während Fälle wie dieser die tägliche Realität auf dem Mittelmeer zeigen, fokussieren sich die Medien auf Ceuta mit einem Notstands-Narrativ, das Aufrüstung und Abschreckung rechtfertigt. Wir fordern, die Fluchtursachen zu bekämpfen und die Verantwortlichen zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen.
