How many more deaths at sea can remain unseen, undocumented, unaccounted?

For years, the official death toll in the Mediterranean was counted in the tens of thousands. But the Italian Red Cross estimates that up to 200,000 people may have died at Europe’s sea borders in one decade; and the number will go up during the summer.

Countless people who disappeared at sea were never even included in the statistics, as if they were not worth of a number. No bodies recovered, no survivors left to testify, no official record. A mass death at Europe’s borders has not only been tolerated; it has never even been counted.

Wie viele Tode auf See können noch unbemerkt, undokumentiert und unaufgeklärt bleiben?

Jahrelang belief sich die offizielle Zahl der Todesopfer im Mittelmeer auf Zehntausende. Das Italienische Rote Kreuz schätzt jedoch, dass in dem Jahrzehnt der Aufzeichnungen bis zu 200.000 Menschen an der Seegrenze ums Leben gekommen sein könnten. Und diese Zahl wird im Sommer noch steigen.

Unzählige Menschen, die auf dem Mittelmeer verschwanden, wurden nicht einmal in die Statistiken aufgenommen, als wären sie keiner Zahl würdig. Es gibt keine geborgenen Körper, keine Überlebenden, die aussagen könnten, und keine offiziellen Aufzeichnungen. Dieses Massensterben an den Grenzen Europas wurde nicht nur toleriert, es wurde noch nie gezählt.

We call on the EU to end the violence in the Mediterranean! The so-called Libyan Coast Guard must no longer be supported, and safe passage must be granted to all people seeking protection.

We will not be intimidated and stand in solidarity with everybody on the move. We will keep going until no one is forced to die on the crossing.

Wir rufen die EU auf, die Gewalt auf dem Mittelmeer zu beenden! Die sogenannte libysche Küstenwache darf nicht weiter unterstützt werden und Schutzsuchenden müssen reguläre Fluchtwege ermöglicht werden.

Wir lassen uns nicht einschüchtern und stehen in Solidarität mit allen Flüchtenden. Wir machen weiter, bis niemand mehr auf der Überfahrt sterben muss.

We stand in full solidarity with the crew of Sea-Watch5! ✊

First shot at in international waters by the so-called Libyan Coast Guard, now criminalised by Italian authorities. After evacuating and bringing 166 people to safety, a criminal investigation has been opened against the captain for „aiding and abetting unauthorised immigration.” This is an absurd escalation and a clear attempt to intimidate civil search and rescue operations in the Central Med.

Wir stehen in voller Solidarität mit der Besatzung der Sea-Watch 5! ✊

Zuerst wurden die Überlebenden und die in internationalen Gewässern von der sogenannten libyschen Küstenwache beschossen, nun wird sie von den italienischen Behörden kriminalisiert. Nachdem 166 Menschen evakuiert und in Sicherheit gebracht wurden, wurde gegen den Kapitän der ein Strafverfahren wegen „Beihilfe zur illegalen Einwanderung“ eingeleitet. Dies ist eine absurde Eskalation und ein klarer Versuch, zivile Such- und Rettungsaktionen im zentralen Mittelmeer einzuschüchtern.

Early this morning, the NADIR crew spotted 73 people in distress on an unseaworthy, overcrowded wooden boat. During the crossing, some of them were accommodated in the lower compartment, where the risk of suffocation from toxic fuel fumes is incredibly high.

Because their lives were acutely endangered, the crew initiated the evacuation. Despite a two-meter swell, everyone – including five women and a child – could safely board NADIR. Water ingress inside the blue wooden boat had created a corrosive mixture of saltwater and fuel, causing chemical burns. Besides these injuries, many are also suffering from severe dizziness and dehydration, and are currently receiving initial medical assistance from our crew.

The group had departed from Zuwara, Libya, and was exposed to the elements for two days. The NADIR is currently en route to Lampedusa, the assigned port of safety, with arrival expected tonight.

Heute, am frühen Morgen, entdeckte die Crew der NADIR 73 Menschen in Not auf einem seeuntüchtigen, überfüllten Holzboot. Während der Überfahrt waren einige der Personen im unteren Teil des Boots untergebracht, wo die Gefahr des Erstickens durch giftige Kraftstoffdämpfe extrem hoch ist.

Da das Leben der Personen an Bord akut gefährdet war, leitete die Crew die Evakuierung ein. Trotz zwei Meter hoher Wellen konnten alle – darunter fünf Frauen und ein Kind – sicher an Bord der NADIR gehen. Im Inneren des Bootes hatte sich eine ätzende Mischung aus Salzwasser und Treibstoff gebildet, die bei vielen Personen zu chemischen Verbrennungen geführt hatte. Neben diesen Verletzungen leiden viele zudem unter starkem Schwindel und Dehydrierung. Sie erhalten derzeit eine erste medizinische Hilfe von unserer Crew.

Die Gruppe war von Zuwara in Libyen aufgebrochen und war zwei Tage lang dem stürmischen Wetter ausgesetzt gewesen. Die NADIR ist derzeit auf dem Weg nach Lampedusa, dem zugewiesenen sicheren Hafen, wo sie voraussichtlich heute Nacht eintreffen wird.

The night before last, our NADIR crew responded to a distress alert from and found 44 people in distress on a black rubber boat. Water was already entering, it was on the verge of sinking. Whilst the crew was distributing life jackets and preparing for evacuation, a speedboat of the so-called Libyan Coast Guard approached, sending survivors into panic.

The crew operated swiftly and all survivors boarded NADIR safely. With 44 people aboard – among them 10 women, one pregnant, 2 babies, and 2 children – NADIR has now arrived to Lampedusa, the assigned Port of Safety. Everybody disembarked safely, but nearly all survivors will need medical care due to fuel burns.

Especially in the light of the shooting on ’s Sea-Watch 5 on Monday, we once again call for the EU and member states to stop cooperating and supporting the so-called Libyan Coast Guard!

The so-called Libyan Coast Guard opened fire in the direction of Sea-Watch 5 while rescued persons were on board, firing an estimated 10–15 shots over roughly 30 seconds!

The German flag has officially raised the security level for the Libyan SAR region, finally acknowledging the „repeated incidents“ and violent threats posed by the so-called Libyan Coast Guard (scLCG).

This admission comes as the government concedes that the situation in Libya remains volatile, with no effective state control over its waters. Yet, the hypocrisy is deafening: despite acknowledging the scLCG as a primary threat to safety, the German Parliament extended the IRINI mandate in November 2025. This renewal no longer excludes the collaboration with these actors.

Meanwhile, EU partners like Italy continue to actively equip and train the scLCG, while authorities pressure the civil fleet to coordinate with these militias, even threatening to detain our vessels if we refuse to comply.

You cannot recognize the scLCG as a security risk with one hand while facilitating their violence with the other. The German government must stop its complicity and take real action to protect lives at sea.

Die Heuchelei der Sicherheit

Die deutsche Flagge hat endlich die „mehrfachen“ Vorfälle und gewalttätigen Bedrohungen durch die sogenannte libysche Küstenwache (scLCG) anerkannt.

Die Lage in Libyen sei weiterhin instabil und eine wirksame staatliche Kontrolle über die Gewässer sei nicht gegeben. Dennoch ist die Heuchelei offenkundig: Obwohl die scLCG als Bedrohung für die Sicherheit von SAR- und Handelsschiffen anerkannt wird, hat der Deutsche Bundestag im November 2025 das IRINI-Mandat verlängert. Diese Verlängerung schließt die Zusammenarbeit mit jenen Akteure nicht mehr aus.

Gleichzeitig rüsten EU-Partner wie Italien die scLCG weiterhin aktiv aus und bilden sie aus, während die respektiven Behörden die zivile Flotte unter Druck setzen, sich mit diesen Milizen in Seenotfällen abzustimmen, und sogar damit drohen, unsere Schiffe festzuhalten, wenn wir uns weigern, dem nachzukommen.

Man kann die scLCG nicht einerseits als Sicherheitsrisiko anerkennen und andererseits ihre Gewalt begünstigen. Die deutsche Regierung muss ihre Komplizenschaft beenden und echte Maßnahmen ergreifen, um Leben auf See zu schützen.

Our third crew is getting ready! 🦺

Over the past few days, our seven crew members have stocked up, trained, and briefed for their three-week operation aboard NADIR. We are now heading toward the migration route in the , where our completely volunteer crews have been active since 2019.

Operating a sailing boat allows us to patrol with low fuel consumption, making our operations both environmentally friendly and highly cost-effective. By keeping operational expenses low, we are flexible and can focus all resources on our activities at sea. NADIR has already supported over 14,000 people in distress at sea.

Unsere dritte Crew macht sich bereit! 🦺

In den letzten Tagen haben unsere sieben Crewmitglieder Vorräte angelegt, trainiert und sich auf ihren dreiwöchigen Einsatz an Bord der NADIR vorbereitet. Wir steuern nun die Migrationsroute im zentralen Mittelmeer an, wo unsere rein ehrenamtlichen Crews seit 2019 im Einsatz sind.

Der Einsatz eines Segelboots ermöglicht es uns, mit geringem Treibstoffverbrauch zu patrouillieren, was unsere Einsätze sowohl umweltfreundlich als auch äußerst kosteneffizient macht. Indem wir die operativen Kosten niedrig halten, sind wir flexibel und können alle Ressourcen auf unsere Aktivitäten auf See konzentrieren – und haben so mit der NADIR bereits über 14.000 Menschen in Seenot unterstützt.
