Yesterday's Meetup, "Metaverse: Hype or Hope," at Netlight in Hamburg was a great success! The conversation was exciting and intense, and our speakers Dajana Eder (wom3n.dao), Burkhard Müller (Chief Digital Officer MUTABOR) and Johannes Crilly (Business Development Lead Bizzlogic GmbH) had some amazing insights to share in their discussion with Simon, the host of the event.

The evening covered a wide range of topics, from the benefits of the Metaverse, to the challenges it faces, especially regarding adoption, diversity, inclusion — and many topics in between. We talked about if and why people should care about the Metaverse and it’s potentials, and whether it's just a fever dream of tech bros or something more substantial.

Speaking of it, the tech behind the Metaverse was also discussed, and we explored its immersive premises, as well as the relevance of decentralization. Johannes shared some interesting insights on how his clients see the Metaverse and its potential impact on their business and what their actual expectations regarding virtuality are.

Consequently, we also delved into the question of whether the Metaverse is a Utopia or Dystopia, covering the potential pitfalls and the need for social diversity. In the end, the panelists agreed upon the fact, that communities, companies, politics, and institutions need to work together, to unlock the opportunities the Metaverse potentially provides.

Unfortunately, Silvia Wiesner was not able to join us due to a delayed flight, and was dearly missed. We’ll cover her insights WEF and perspectives on diversity and inclusion in an upcoming podcast episode very soon.

This year's XRcon took place at the end of November. It was great to see so many of you joining us live on the Demodern platform.
The whole day was well timed with interesting talks, Q & As and networking.
Many thanks to our speakers for their great presentations.
Jan Beutgen Technical Director at Demodern. He talked about “User Experience in Corporate Metaverse - Mobile meets VR & AR”.
Sean Keogh and Daniel Schäfer Partner and Founder at headroom focused on “The Switch from 2D to 3D remote working environments”.
In the Tech and Research track we had presentations from Prof. Dr.-Ing. Benjamin Weyers, he is currently Assistant Professor at University of Trier and Head of the Human-Computer Interaction Group. He talked about “Virtual Reality in Everyday Working Environments and Scenarios”
Veronika Krauß Research Fellow and PhD Candidate, was talking about Dark Patterns which are malevolent design solutions that manipulate a user to perform unintended actions.
Prof. Gerd Bruder from the Institute for Simulation & Training University of Central Florida, took a look at embodied IVAs in AR.
Last but not least Jonas Rothe, founder and CEO of TimeRide GmbH talked about “Time Traveling! – How Virtual Reality helps us to travel into the past!”

Next Thursday, 17.11.2022 we will host our second nextReality.Conference and you can register for it now! XRcon is free of charge and takes place online on the Demodern platform. You can easily participate via your browser.

This year, we also have exciting talks from great speakers in the pipeline for you.
Today we want to start the introduction of the speakers from our Tech + Research track
which includes three talks:

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Benjamin Weyers, he is currently Assistant Professor at University of Trier and Head of the Human-Computer Interaction Group. He will talk about “Virtual Reality in Everyday Working Environments and Scenarios”

Veronika Krauß Research Fellow and PhD Candidate, is talking about Dark Patterns which are malevolent design solutions that manipulate a user to perform unintended actions. So far, XR dark patterns are not yet observable in the wild due to the novelty of the medium. In her presentation, she wants to discuss the manipulative potential XR offers to such malicious designs.

In the presentation from Prof. Gerd Bruder from the Institute for Simulation & Training University of Central Florida, he will look at embodied IVAs in AR, how they transform the way we interact in smart connected environments, how one’s sense of trust influences their effectiveness, and how current limitations in see-through AR displays cause inequities that need to be overcome in the future.
