Reflecting on the STUBE Ost Seminar: Cooperation in Development – Partnership as Equals?
From June 11th to 14th, 2025, we had the invaluable opportunity to participate in the STUBE Ost Seminar in Berlin, focusing on the critical theme of "Cooperation in Development – Partnership as Equals?".
This insightful seminar featured a rich program designed to deepen our understanding of development cooperation:
Workshop I: Develop What? An in-depth exploration of the various meanings and interpretations of "development."
Workshop II: Postcolonial Perspectives on "Development": A dedicated session on practicing postcolonial thinking in the context of development.
Beyond the workshops, we also had the chance to engage with key institutions and initiatives:
A visit to the BMZ (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung / Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development), offering insights into Germany's development policies.
An inspiring tour of the "BERLIN GLOBAL" exhibition at the Humboldt Forum Berlin, connecting global issues with local perspectives.
A meaningful visit with the NGO Brot für die Welt, learning about their impactful work.
It was an incredibly enriching experience, fostering profound discussions on the future of development cooperation and the pursuit of more equitable partnerships. We look forward to applying these learnings!

Women’s Rights Seminar: A Life-Changing Experience

From March 7th to 9th, 2025, students from different universities and diverse backgrounds gathered at Jugendherberge Halle for a powerful seminar on women’s rights and empowerment. We were 20 participants, 10 women and 10 men from Afghanistan, Nigeria, India, Georgia, Ghana, Burundi, Rwanda, Myanmar, Zimbabwe, and Gambia. It was an incredible opportunity to learn, share experiences, and take action.

On the first day, we introduced ourselves and discussed the situation of women’s rights in our home countries. Ranjhita from India presented the struggles women face in education, jobs, and safety, while Frida from Kenya gave an emotional talk on gender inequality in her country. These personal stories were eye-opening and set the stage for deeper discussions.

The second day was intense and inspiring. We explored CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women) and worked in groups to find solutions to violence against women. Naweed from Afghanistan delivered a powerful presentation on women’s rights under Taliban rule, while Chit Phyu from Myanmar shared the challenges women face in a conflict-ridden country. In the afternoon, we took our learning to the streets, participating in a feminist demonstration – creating posters, marching, and advocating for gender equality. It was empowering to engage in real activism! The day ended with a memorable Intercultural Night, where Maxwell and Beatrice from Ghana led an exciting session. It was a beautiful experience that brought everyone together in celebration of diversity.

On the final day, we explored feminist foreign policies and the role of women in peace and security. Irina Ruoff introduced the Three R’s (Rights, Resources, and Representation), quoting Floyd Dell: “Feminists will make it possible for the first time for men to be free.” This sparked a deep and thought-provoking discussion. Yodit Tamiru from Ethiopia then shared valuable insights on women’s role in ending conflicts, focusing on the Ethiopia-Tigray conflict.

The seminar was truly life-changing. We left feeling inspired, empowered, and ready to fight for women’s rights and gender equality in our own countries.

A huge thank you to our dedicated facilitators, Jana and Francisca, for their commitment in making this event a success.

Thank you, STUBE, for such a wonderful and unforgettable experience!

In cold winter temperatures, a group of international students set out to work on the topic of Global Trade in Hamburg. We discussed with Dr. Thomas Dürmeier from Goliathwatch why trade exists at all, what it can look like and what framework conditions exist. In further workshops with Hamburg mal fair , various aspects of (in)justice in global trade were discussed and fair trade was presented as a positive approach. During a tablet rally, we explored Hamburg's role in global trade and its colonial history. Another highlight was a boat tour on the topic of “Energy Policy & Global Trade” in Hamburg's industrial harbor.
Many thanks to all participating students for this great seminar!

*A Green Future – Global Energy Transition* Stube Seminar in Jena
The last seminar for this year took place in November. We looked at the role of renewable energy in the Global South and discussed the opportunities and risks. We also learned new practical skills: we built our own solar-powered cell phone chargers. Many thanks to Peter and Daniel for their expertise and a big thanks to all Stube students, you enrich the seminars so much!
