SITM - Société Internationale pour l'Étude du Théâtre Médiéval

SITM - Société Internationale pour l'Étude du Théâtre Médiéval The next congress will take place in Fribourg/CH, July 2025. THE 15 SITM CONFERENCE WILL TAKE PLACE IN DURHAM, July 7–12, 2016 .

The Société Internationale pour l'Étude du Théâtre Médiéval meets at triannial congresses, which combine historical theatre research with reenacting performances of medieval plays. From the very beginning of SITM's colloquia an important part of the event remains a large scale medieval drama festival. We warmly invite theatrical and musical groups performing medieval and early modern repertoire to attend our colloquium.

From 18–22 July, the 18th Triennial Colloquium of the Société Internationale pour l’Étude du Théâtre Médiéval (SITM) was held in Fribourg, graciously hosted by Elisabeth Dutton and Aurélie Blanc of the Université de Fribourg - Universität Freiburg.

The colloquium featured several dozen scholarly papers exploring themes such as Swiss theatre, demons, human and non-human actors, and more. A rich programme of performances brought together the theatrical traditions of medieval Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, offering participants a vibrant and thought-provoking experience of medieval performance in all its complexity.

Heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to this inspiring gathering — and au revoir until we meet again in three years’ time!

For those in western France at the end of July, don’t miss a rare and exciting opportunity to attend a conference dedicated to "Le Mystère de Saint Julien", organized by the Association des Amis de Pontigny-Cerisy in partnership with the LASLAR research laboratory.

Discovered in 2021, this remarkable mystery play—comprising nearly 10,600 verses and featuring around 80 characters—was originally performed over two days. Its author, Nicolas Osber, a royal lawyer in Carentan, printed the only known copy of the play in 1530, likely following its performance in Carentan the previous year.

Held at the Château de Cerisy-La-Salle from 28 to 31 July, the conference will offer a rich literary and historical exploration of the mystery, examining the cultural and historical context of its creation, its place in early modern performance tradition, and the linguistic and dramaturgical challenges it presents.
